Actually the Kop is named after the battle of the Spion Kop, which occurred during the Boer War and Kop is the Boer word for hill. During that battle, many Scousers lost their lives and the stand was named in their honour. Many other UK grounds have a "Kop" from this period, but it's not a UK colloquial name.
