    So interesting. I'm a Pickleball player looking for ideas to help me keep my eye on the ball. I have a Table Tennis background and used to really using a peripheral vision to make super quick decisions but in PB (and obviously Tennis) you have more time to really hone in. I assume the elite TT players do this as well.....anyway much thanks....and will try this.

    Great way to get a conscious grip on determining your level of effort. Transitioning from slow, smooth and relaxed, to increase racket acceleration without tightening up. “Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.”

    I’m 54 and have only been playing tennis for 3 years. Enjoying it thoroughly! I played a 3.0 USTA match with a guy in his 40’s. He won the first set 7/5. It was competitive. I was up 5/1 in the second set…but then I couldn’t hold serve or break serve and he ended up winning the match at 7/5 7/5. Part of the reason was that I became exhausted toward the very end. I completely lost my serve (which was pretty good for the majority of the match) in the last game. My mind started to drift during the last few games, I think mostly due to fatigue. Thoughts?

      Hi Dave, thanks for your question. Glad to hear you are thoroughly enjoying your tennis! I'm wondering what type of fatigue you experienced... physical, mental, a combination of both...was it a hot day...your ability to identify what type of fatigue will make it much more clear to know what steps you need to take next. Let me know and I will be happy to help you clarify your fatigue and possible solutions. That said, when fatigue hits just focusing on inhale as the ball comes toward you and exhale as you make contact can really help focus your energies at crucial moments. Look forward to hearing from you after you give it a try and get more clarity on your fatigue. all my best, Peter

      @@telostennis5675 Thanks for the reply! It was a hot day. I was physically tired in the legs. And I after losing several games in a row, I believe my mental toughness started to fatigue as well. I just wanted to “finish the game” rather than play the next point.

    • @telostennis5675
      @telostennis5675 8 місяців тому

      when that type of fatigue sets in perhaps you can simply try to focus on inhale as the ball comes toward you and exhale as you make contact. that is one doable for the mind to focus on and it helps the body to perform. best, Peter

    Great post, Peter. I am not sure if any other tennis player could have won the 1980 Wimby Final, after letting seven match points slip by. All of Borg's fans really missed him, as he quit at a ridiculously young age. He could have won a few more slams for sure - defo the French Open in 1982 and 1983. I was lucky enough to meet him in the mid-2000s when he launched his clothing range at Selfridges, and he signed the gigantic poster I'd had of him since 1980. A lovely man and a true legend of the sport!

    So you are saying keep your head still and only move your eyes? Don’t really understand the mechanics, but am intrigued.Anita

    • @telostennis5675
      @telostennis5675 Рік тому

      Hi Anita, Thanks for your question! so yes keep your head still and your eyes still and focus on a central point. You focus on one thing and just look at it. If you are on the court at the baseline you could just look at the net post, or the center strap, etc. While you are focused on that one thing let yourself become more aware of what is to the left and what is to the right. but stay focused on the center strap. the things to the left and right won't be a sharp focus but you will know they are there. Then do the some thing and become aware of what is above and below your focus point. You can also practice it off the court. Just decide on a central point (your phone, a tree, a chair, etc) and then become aware of what surrounds that point, without moving your head or your eyes. Let me know how it goes and don't hesitate to ask more questions any time. Best, Peter

      Thank you I've been a pro for over 40 years and coached many players in I call it relaxed confidence if you're not relaxed your muscles are tight and I like to start off with relaxing your face smiling and thinking positive thoughts the moment you walk on the court have a positive attitude which emits to your whole body muscles tendons and ligaments and then breathing like you say follow your breath and focus on that it's hard enough as the mind will wander ...thank you for your tips

    • @telostennis5675
      @telostennis5675 11 місяців тому

      Hi Anita, sorry it took so long to get back to you! Somehow I missed your question. First, I am saying keep your head still and your eyes still, and simply choose one thing to focus on that at least 10 feet away. And then while you are looking at that one thing, become aware of what is too the left and the right of that thing. Your head and your eyes don’t move. You just wake up your peripheral vision. Then become aware of what is above and what is below the one thing you are still focused on. Once you do this then you can move onto a moving thing like the tennis ball. Stay focused on it as it moves but see how you can become aware of on the left and the right and above and below. Be aware if you move your eyes to see these things then you are not using your peripheral vision - and waking up your peripheral vision is the point of this TELOS Tennis tool. Feel free to ask questions and/or share your experience. All my best, Peter

    Mmmmm is breathing? Outbreath through the nose?

    • @telostennis5675
      @telostennis5675 Рік тому

      Hi Mary, yes the mmm sound the air is coming out the nose. It’s an easy way to nose breath (otherwise known as nasal diaphragmatic breath). It’s more efficient and it’s the way we breath when we aren’t stressed. Humans are what’s k ow as inveterate nose breathers. And another cool thing I recently learned…when we make the mmmm sound it stimulates the Vagus nerve (largest nerve root we have) and activated our parasympathetic nervous system (the one that makes us chemically relax) And if you forget everything I just typed then all you have to do is connect the mmm sound to the contact with the ball and lots of really cool and helpful stuff happens☺️

    That was interesting and exciting to learn. Peter our teaching styles are very similar I’m getting a lot out of your content, thank you for everything you share! I’ve always tried to teach (learn) through awareness. Some of my students seem incapable of ‘slowing’ down and removing the judgement. Or I’ll ask them something like, show me where you think your racquet was a contact. And they’ll say it was open got it. I respond your mind understands but not your body, indulge me and show me… I sense their impatience and I’m not enjoying teaching this student. My question, how do you manage these types? Do you ever ‘fire’, refuse students? I have 1 or 2 clients out of a very busy teaching schedule that suck all my energy and patience. Love to hear your thoughts and some help on this topic. Thanks, Marc

    • @telostennis5675
      @telostennis5675 Рік тому

      Thanks Marc! I appreciate your appreciation as well as your questions:) I work with lots of folks who are in a hurry and would like me to teach the same way their past teachers have taught them even though they are not happy with those teachers. The "work" is to learn how to help my students clarify and prioritize their agenda when they come to learn from me. Once the agenda is specific and prioritized the lesson takes off - starting by going through the TELOS Tennis Warm Up Progression. At the end of every lesson I ask if it was successful. If they hesitate I will ask what didn't happen that they wanted to happen. Sometimes they will say things like, "well, I was really wanting more exercise and moving around...or "I really wanted to work on my serve, etc". When this happens I return to the agenda that they set (which by the way they can change at any moment of the lesson). When I say something like, "if you wanted exercise or to sweat then you would have let me know and put that on the agenda and then prioritize it. I make sure to let my students know that they should prioritize so that if we only got to the first thing on their agenda they would be satisfied. We often get to 5 or 6 things but there is no guarantee of that. I let them know that I can't help them do something I don't even know they want to do. This becomes a great learning point for them as they begin to realize they are responsible for the agenda and I am responsible for helping them fulfill it. The more specific and prioritized the agenda the faster they get results. Most people I work with really want results so we both end up satisfied. That said, there are some folks who are only looking for a hitter and aren't looking for a learning experience. I gently guide them to a better choice as I know lots of pros who enjoy being a hitter. I make the distinction that I am not a hitter, I am a teaching pro. (I oftentimes hire someone to be a hitter for me during my lessons). And once again this helps them to get what they want. Hope that helps!

      @@telostennis5675 Peter, thanks for your reply! I’m with you on everything you responded. Perhaps I didn’t ask my question clearly. Some students discount the concept of ‘awareness’ , hard getting them to stop and show me how they just hit it or how they think they should hit it. They want to tell me but can’t / won’t demonstrate. Have no/little body awareness. Hard to engage them. Progress is slow. Like you I’m not interested in being a hitting partner, I want to help you improve and love the game every time you step out on the court.

    Loved your questions, especially #3; what do you do if you thought it was intentional. I also really liked reading the comments and your responses. I hope to find the Telos way of dealing video. I teach a lot of kids and it amazes me how many of them make bad line calls. I often ask them are you serious? That ball was so obviously in, why would you make that call? If it’s a close call, I explain the Tennis etiquette as I learned it. I’ll call the balls on my side, you call them on yours. When in doubt call it in. Peter, any other suggestions to dealing with my 8 to 12 year old ‘cheaters’? Maybe the link to your video. Thanks

      Hey Marc…interesting question for me…one thought that comes to mind is video their side of the court…so their is objective data…then in the moment…ask them if they are sure and show video data…see how they process that information that their perception was inaccurate. Calling them a cheater will make them defensive and less likely to learn and grow. I remember there was a 12 and under tournament that had playsight match calling. There was a girl who was a notorious cheater who knew their was video and knew if she made 3 bad calls she would be defaulted. Turns out she made no bad calls at all. I think you could set up a couple of iPhones to cover the lines

      @@telostennis5675 I like your suggestion, it will be interesting to see how they will process the data. It seems to be a character flaw in some children… so desperate to win.

      I prefer shortcoming rather than flaw....I see a shortcoming is something that is undeveloped and needs to be nurtured in order to help it grow...that part of us that "cheats" is indeed desperate to win...and I feel like if one really does learn to enjoy the journey, and observe without judgment...they end up winning more...but that winning is a side effect of their daily practice and their moment to moment practice...for me it's really quite simple - the love of learning is the key. And I have been there as someone who was desperate "to win" and discovered how truly unsatisfying and empty the results that approach to living and playing tennis are. TELOS is my way of 1) creating an optimal learning environment, 2) fostering a love of learning, and 3) fostering indepedent learning. Hope this helps! best, Peter

    Love this! I’ve created a game with my students, it’s called the game of « perfect » they pose after every shot. When they feel on balance with a good finish they say perfect. Just being aware of the finish is magic and they immediately start hitting better balls.

      Great exercise. Thanks for sharing Marc. funny thing is "Notice the Great: has evolved since making this video, to letting the student pick a word to describe when it feels "great"; and very often they choose perfect. So when they hit a shot that feels "perfect" they stop and take a "mental snap shot" in order to triangulate their contact point on a ball that feels "perfect". Some students have chosen "joy" and others like the word "amazing". Different strokes for different folks!

    • @telostennis5675
      @telostennis5675 Рік тому

      Hi Jay, thanks for your question. It is not a technique. It is an exercise whose purpose is to help you connect to your center, so you can feel how much stronger that makes your volley. Once you know what it feels like then you can become aware how often your volley is not connected to your center. Just practicing this will help you to be more connected to your source of power, consistency, and accuracy (your center) more often. Hope this helps explain it! Please feel free to reach out anytime. I enjoy sharing what I know and hope it helps you get what you want. Best, Peter

    This is good because it seems to me it teaches you “wait” until you feel the ball on your strings before pushing the racquet towards your target. It relaxes the upper body and you don't feel rushed to make contact “out in front” of the body because you have more time than you realize when volleying.

    Hi Peter! In the last four matches I played all with different partners, lost four different 5-7 with 5-3 leads! I’m the common denominator. I can’t figure it out. I don’t necessarily get tight but maybe too relaxed if there is such thing. Is there?

    • @telostennis5675
      @telostennis5675 Рік тому

      Hi Miao, Yes, there is absolutely such a thing as being too relaxed. The goal is to be fully relaxed AND fully engaged. Perhaps you need to be more mentally engaged when you have a 5-3 lead. Perhaps you can focus on targeting and observation without judgment when you find yourself with a lead. Would love to hear what you discover! Also, my son always tells me that correlation is not causation. So, I would like you to consider that even though you are the common denominator it may not be just you. Hope this helps. just watching Indian Wells and Haddad-Maia in her return stance. incredibly wide stance. like Djokovic very wide stance. and many others. the point of the video is that there is a reason they have such a wide stance. this video content is designed as an exercise to give users an experience of how a wide stance connects us to our center and how this affects how it feels to hit a ball. the video is not teaching technique or giving advice.

    • @tomsd8656
      @tomsd8656 Рік тому

      No it's not. Take a page from martial art. Balance is the key, and when you hit volleys, you cannot be off balance. Wide stance and lowering center of gravity helps you achieve the balance. You will be feeling a lot better when a fast ball comes at you and you feel you're in a balance position to intercept it. And this is not just volleys but for every shot. You don't see pros hitting forehand or backhand without a wide stance and soft knee to lower center of gravity.

      This approach seems confusing as we’ve always been taught that your power comes from forward movement and this would also seem to limit your lateral movement…I’ll have to try and see how it feels though.

    • @telostennis5675
      @telostennis5675 Рік тому

      Hi Brian, thanks for your comment. This exercise is not the end result for your volley. It is simply designed to get you to feel what it is like to connect with your center. Once you feel that and feel confident with that, then forward movement and lateral movement will come...but you will feel connected to your center when you move. I would love it if you let me know how it goes and feel free to ask me questions as you explore. Thanks, Peter

    Whet should the front foot be doing? What's the instruction here?

    • @telostennis5675
      @telostennis5675 Рік тому

      Hi Gregory, there is no right answer to what the front foot should be doing. I am asking you to watch a pro that you like their serve and see what their front foot is doing. I am also asking you to become aware of what your front foot is doing. TELOS an awareness based learning system that doesn't tell you what to do. It sets up an environment for you to discover what works best for you. And all the science supports that this "intrincsic" learning is much more effective and long lasting than "extrinsic" learning which can sometimes produce the change we are looking for but often ends up being another thing we have to try and remember. And trying to remember things causes us to think and thinking usually diminishes our performance. I recognize that this approach to learning is not for everyone. It would be great if you try it and let me know what your experience is with it. thanks for your questions! all my best, Peter

"Trying" to keep the head down we use muscles that make us tight. When we wake up our peripheral vision, the need to lift our head just goes away. We realize that we can see everything without looking up. Please let me know what happens after you give it a try. all my best, Peter

And what he does on a tennis court is absolutely extraordinary and amazing! Just yesterday someone was sharing the stats of his 3 tiebreakers in the Wimbledon final where he overcame match points to win. Fed made 12 unforced errors in the 3 tiebreakers and Novak made 1. When Novak decides he is not going to miss…he just doesn’t and I can feel it through the television. Amazing!
