History of Chow Mein:
Chow Mein (炒面), meaning "stir-fried noodles," originates from China, particularly the Guangdong province. It was traditionally popular among Cantonese and Hakka communities and became a staple street food due to its quick preparation and delicious taste.
During the 19th and early 20th centuries, Chinese immigrants brought Chow Mein to the United States, the UK, India, and Southeast Asia, where it adapted to local tastes.
* In America, it became a popular takeout dish, often with crispy or soft noodles.
* In India, it evolved into "Indian Chow Mein" with local spices and a spicier flavor.
* In the UK, it remained a favorite in Chinese restaurants, typically served with stir-fried vegetables and meat.
There are two main styles of Chow Mein in China:
A: Crispy Chow Mein - Noodles are fried until crunchy and topped with sauce.
