Great interview! I totally agree with Bryan about the „not hearing every single note“….that would be like hearing every single letter while speaking.

As far as drums go. Play the drums you need on synth guitar and get some good samples. That's what I do on my album, Hyperreal. It's not cheating if you play the drums yourself.....on guitar! In fact I'd love to hear Bryan on drums....on guitar!

Interesting observation about musicians and music: after seeing and listening to a number of Bryan’s blazing solos, then listening to this interview (which I found riveting, btw), I notice such a strong parallel between how musicians play and how they ARE. The style/type/kind of play (in his case, fast, mile-a-minute, TONS of intriguing ideas) is reflected in his speech pattens, fast, mile-a-minute, so much so, I had to back up a number of times to figure out what he said. I find this true in many cases. For instance, I had the great fortune to meet Jim Hall years ago; he was the epitome of a gentle soft-spoken man, and this was totally reflected in his playing; a drummer friend of mine is the most bombastic busy, over-playing guy I’ve ever worked with, and I can hardly stand talking with him because THAT’S how he approaches conversations, aggressive, wordy non-stop in your face assault. Interesting. Thanks for this interview. Highly inspirational

bryan has avant garde temperaments i guess. he should listen to the residents, "duck stab" lp from 1978. "theory of obscurity" in music, proposed by the residents. helpful for berkely nerds trying to undo their knowledge and think on higher terms. he can also listen to the scott walker lp "bish bosch" from 2012.

  • @andresmarino2788

Wow. This is quite insightful . I happened upon clips of baker playing and he clearly is capable and delivers. I began getting skeptical after seeing various clips over time where there seemed to be disparate shifts in his look or superficial “ vibe “ aspect - couldn’t tell if this was just someone evolving over time or marketing attempts. There are some performances where his demeanor came off as arrogant or having disdain for his context. This series of clips from this interview is pretty illuminating as to what could be motivators for things that could leave that impression . Regardless of whatever superficially based judgement , what is far more clear now , is his impatience or appetite and searching and his drive ; throughout the interview there are many profound questions conclusions and insights he points to that are very very worthwhile things to be thinking about or reevaluating- at some points his answers are so quick and cutting that it becomes clear that there are even flaws in the apparent notion of what the questions seems to be after; his answer sweeps things aside and addresses the core of what was attempted to be asked and the way it’s delivered reveals he has given these ideas considerable thought already and that some things are less complex than they purport to be and have obvious answers or solutions at times.Thank you for this

I wish he could talk about his influences ! More than using scales in a different way, I think some of the fast intervals he play can be found in Shawn Lane's or Thelonious Monk's music.
