Life in a 4wd
Australia
Приєднався 15 сер 2020
Welcome to our channel! We are Char and Shaneo, aka Life in a 4wd. A couple in our early 30s who decided in our 20s that the 9-5 successful careers we were chasing were not actually bringing us any form of satisfaction. Shaneo decided to build a custom boat trailer set up to allow us to take our trusty little tinny and rooftop tent around Australia with us (build series is featured on this channel).
After 12 months on the road we have had to set up shop for a wee while to earn some more coin and have been lucky enough to secure jobs at Dhipirri Barra and Sportsfishing Lodge in Arnhem Land. Come join Shaneo and I as we document life in this remote part of Australia and as Shaneo begins a new careers as a Barramundi fishing guide.... and we'll be back on the road again before we know it!

I just binged watch your channel for hours. I have a 79 and love it. Seems like the channel has gone quiet.
Hey bro! Yeah we got into work life in Darwin to pay off the 79 series and that part of life doesn’t seem quite so exciting to share. Hoping to have some videos up in the new year running through the 79 series build in February when it will be 80-90% done! Thanks for the support of our page, it’s so appreciated and we do intend to be back.
@ too easy. Travel safe. 🙏
Check at Qld transport supposedly they no longer issue vin numbers
Any chance of doing a video on the RAVS and ROVER process of obtaining vehicle approval & VIN ect? Specifically regarding the evidence of direct control of design and manufacturing process, as well as the quality management process and evidence....
Can i swap 5L e to 5L mech. Pump boss?
Great work. Thanks for sharing. been there 25-30 times ... way out back. It's one of my favourite places in the world. Super wholesome video.
Thanks heaps mate! We love those remote spots.
Love the videos
Legend 🤙🏻🤙🏻
All the storage and not one bra 🫣🫣
I really wanted to make a sassy comment in response to this but honestly I did find this hilarious.🤣 Serious note though - bras are optional and didn’t even exist for thousands of years 😉 if you haven’t worn one and don’t realise how much comfier it is without one then you just don’t know 😂
Thanks mate 👍 I might try it one day as it's acceptable for a man to wear one these days 🤣🤣 love the videos and 1kzte good decision
What you guys been doing lately 🤔
Disappearing off the face of the earth 😂 Nah but seriously since this time we’ve pretty much non stop worked other than one weekend away in August. We’ve been saving hard to do Red Dawg up to the nines, everything we dreamed in a build. We will return with more adventures but we aren’t in that season right now!
Hey mate! Looks amazing!! I’m going to North Queensland soon for fishing mostly. Mostly want to do land based GT fishing. Do you have some general recommendations or tips for areas? On one hand around cairns/Whitsundays seems good but it looks like a boat is almost necessary for good fishing. I think up north around Siesa and Cape York would be better as there’s less fishers and it’s warmer! What are your thoughts and if you have general tips for someone going up north for fishing I would definitely love to hear it!!
Highly recommend getting the navionics app and look for any headland with deeper water and a pressure point that will have current. Theres plenty of spots up at Cape York! What time of year are you thinking of going? If you go peak dry season Cape York is packed so just a warning there if you want less fishers don’t go then haha!
@@lifeina4wd awesome, Will do that! I’m going in November and December! So I think that should be okay then, right?
A icebus is heating up a portals and the engine is off .how can I find a problem Is?
Maybe speak to a mechanic - we are not mechanics we are just mechanically minded haha
My on going project 😅wow
is it turbo
Yeah we did an engine conversion to a 1KZ which has a factory turbo
@@lifeina4wd you reckon I’d be better off buying a turbo diesel like the KZN165R model. Just love the early 2000s interior and body
@@James-mb6jtit’s pretty much the same interior and body from memory and you won’t have to be mucking around with engine conversions. Definitely the better option.
im buying one tomorrow
Good work. What’s the cracking noise when you slow?
Had to rewatch this beautiful rig
Haha we rewatch it too! It’s currently still down south waiting for some more modifications! We’ll have it with us from January and we’re so excited.
@@lifeina4wdgetting the canopy done?
@@lifeina4wdhow much are the 79s brand new? I didn’t realize they were so expensive. I’ve followed Ronny for years and thought they were the best looking Australian touring truck there is, but dang I figured they were more budget friendly being essentially a minimalist work truck.
@@nate4036yep! With the same company who did the new one on the Hilux.
@@nate4036hahaha oath!! You’d think so seeming as they are just a glorified farm truck but nope. Stupid money. They aren’t taking orders at the moment so we paid MORE for a 2020 with 60,000kms than a new one. The GXL model I think are about AUD $85,000 new. And you don’t want the model below because it doesn’t even have central locking or electric windows 🤯
Thank you for the video i have a zd30 vp44 im considering g manual. Which pump do you recommend? Thank you
Hi, Nice video, did you use 45mm wide belts? if so, where did you get your ogg road hangers? cheers
We made the spring hangers, if you go back to one of the first videos of this series you’ll see!
Hi, Nice job on the trailer build. Was the galvanising expensive?
Honestly can’t really remember exactly now but it was $3+ per kilo or something similar! That was 2 years ago though it may have changed.
A very natural and beautiful place in Tasmania. You tasted the freshest oysters and blueberries. The underwater shots, plus the rapidly LANDCRUISER were so exciting! We also want to go there once. Live in nature like you again. Love this episode So natural.
Thanks Simon! We agree, Bruny Island is a pretty magical place. We hope you get the opportunity to visit.
Hey mate would you be able to use the original 5L transmission?
No you can’t unfortunately it’s a different bolt pattern.
Can you tell me how to get a VIN number thanks :)
Department of Transport in QLD provided us ours when we registered it but it may have changed since then.
lifeina4wd Yup, definitely has changed
hii, after wathing this video i swap my 5le LN167R to 1kz it finally finished now, did you change the final gear because i found that using stock final gear is really no power.. if you change the final gear please recomend the gear ratio for daily use.. thanks note: i change 1kzte with automatic ttansmission
Just to clarify, are you talking about final gear as in fifth gear? Or final gear as in diff gear ratio?
@@lifeina4wd diff gear ratio..
@@hendrycai6680the LN167 has a 4.88 diff ratio which is all you need when running 31/32 inch tyres. Hope that helps!
Could Please explain why my car is over raping.
Hey! We are not professional mechanics and really only know about our cars engine etc. It might be best to get some advice from a professional mechanic! Good luck!
Hey guys, just wondering if you would share the dimensions of the top part of the build and such. Looking at kicking off my build tomorrow
Hi! That’s so exciting. Do you have the same tent as us and the same size boat?
@@lifeina4wd Hey mate , it will be the same tent as you guys have, my boat is a 3.5meter which i think its a bit smaller then yours. Me and a mate built a frame today on my original trailer today which i think it will work , but i might not of left it enough clearance haha , but yeah i love your trailer set up
yeah clearance is something we struggle with but we wanted it to be tucked under the car height for wind drag and stability so compromised
@lifeina4wd yeah I gotga pull the boat off tomorrow and I hope the front electric mount clears it but at this stage of the build I could always make hight extensions pretty easily
Wow this is the first time we’ve ever heard of a crankshaft breaking in a 5L! Ours cracked due to an error in the way our turbo had been installed meaning it was over boosting and putting too much pressure in the engine.
Will a 1KZ TE fit in a LN46 lux?
Probably, any engine can fit in any car if you’ve got the ability to make it fit haha.
what's the name of the busy stop after Mossman??
Just found your channel , bloody unreal set up btw. Am currently building a 2000kg toy hauler style trailer, also in mackay. Great info mate thanks heaps
Thanks heaps! Sounds like your set up is going to be pretty neat too. Custom is the only way hey 🙌🏻 something to note - the rules have changed slightly since we made this video.
Great build series. We are about to hit the cape with our tinny. Just about to upgrade axels and springs etc to fit bigger Offroad wheel on the trailer. Wondering what brand your black tinny cover is? Looks great. Does it keep a bit of the red dust out?
Hey guys! Thanks so much! Yeah we LOVE our boat cover and yes it keeps ALL the red dust out. It was custom made for our boat by an upholsterer in Noosa. Highly recommend going down that path hey. It’s copped a beating and only had to be patched up in one spot once.
@@lifeina4wd yeah nice! We are on the Sunshine Coast so might look into it. Cheers!
Good quality footwear 👍😬
Hahaha you know it!
@life in a 4wd how did you wire it in
We didn’t have to do any wiring as it was the original mechanical fuel pump from the car.
I’m also from Mackay buying a new boat trailer and then building a frame for it to carry a roof top camper and carry my sailing kayak Any advice like off road tyres etc ?
Yeah definitely this whole build series would give you some helpful tips!
Have enjoyed the build progress vids and made me think just adding an overhead camper tent frame to my lil 3.7 mtr tinnie boat /trailer is gonna be a nightmare with the Transport department with standard suspension, tyres etc ... ☹
Yeah that’s for sure why we built a new one from scratch!
Quick question - do you have cruise control fitted to the Hilux? Do you remember which one you went for?
No cruise control fitted, not something we’ve ever felt we needed!
Congrats guys that awesome.. love the old Hilux
So do we 🥹 she’ll always be our first love.
Hello my friend I wanted to know what is the calibration of the 5L diesel engine valve clearances?
We used the vehicle manual to find useful information like this! We definitely recommend getting one. Unfortunately we don’t have ours with us to check.
Charlotte what's happening No response????
I know I’m sorry! I started a new job which is exciting but has been all consuming!
@@lifeina4wd fully understand. The new job up north, or back at home 🏡. Pity about Cairns my step sons, brother in law buys and sells car's for the last 20 odd year's from auctions for him self and friends and rents cars also. Good hear from you guy's ☺️💯
What’s the dimensions for the canopy?
Sorry for the slow reply! Honestly not 100% sure anymore but we’ll try find out.
Following all the other 79 series driving sheep…. Absolute boring content.
😂 we agree with you, not sure if you watched the full video but think the thumbnail shows that we didn’t actually ever WANT to buy a 79 😅
Just got back where no reception. So glad to see you smiling faces😊. And congratulations 🎉 on your engagement (made me have a tear😢)of happiness for you. Bloody good car you choose and the "same colour as my 80 series my friend has a 79 and loves it, he even extended the chassis for longer canopy,up graded suspension big bucks. If shane builds the Bull bar the round sections ((use steem pipe makes it kangaroo That's what l did. I'm over the moon for you two🎉🎉✔️✔️💯💯
Thank you so much!! We appreciate it 🥰 Has to be the Merlot red hey. I never used to be a fan but I think Shaneo has converted me now. Definitely a lot of expensive mods in the pipeline haha.
Enjoy your new project S & S - you may likely need to upgrade the clutch unless it’s already been done as they’re known to be weak in this model and also the front wheel track is wider than the rear to accomodate the V8 - a retune may be required also unless you’re happy with the factory tune - here is a UA-cam link from a Sydney chap who has reviewed his ‘22 model after two years ownership which may help to inform your upgrades etc - ua-cam.com/video/4Ne8oF974hY/v-deo.htmlsi=B8psr91v-82yfsLz - good luck with the build.
Thanks for the recommendation John! This one did actually come with a heavy duty clutch and a tune..... two major reasons we purchased that we totally forgot to mention haha. Shane used to work for ARB so he's all over the track difference issue etc and is very stubborn with the plan he already has in his mind but we'll watch the video for sure!
@@lifeina4wd Great to know Charlotte that you have a partner that is intimate with the industry and his network as this will help with the build project and of course with your own input and ideas - I’m a humble Hilux owner but thank goodness you didn’t buy a Ford because a number of my colleagues have already had ‘Ranger Danger’ issues and now moving to Toyotas.
I used to fish and dive Bay of Fires 25 odd years ago. No camp grounds, you would just find an alcove off the track and camp. You might have seen a couple of people or maybe not and there were Cray's and Abalone in 6ft of water of the Southern rocks.
This sounds like the dream. I wish we could have experienced Australia 25 years ago.
You paid for reliability.
This is the most accurate comment I think k we’ve ever received. 100%.
Congrats on the Ring! and the 79🎉... I've had one for 5yrs now and all i can say is people will either love it or hate it... just ignore the haters as it's what you wanted. I may have done things arse about... sound deadening was one of the first things I did; then a clutch upgrade, new exhaust and towing tune - no more downshifting to go up hills whilst towing (under 2T anyways), and when it's unladen it's phenomenal. I switched focus to building a canopy for it rather than doing any more which I regret as I don't use the canopy as often... i'd like to have upgraded the head unit and speakers but that'll happen sooner or later... then brakes, then suspension & GVM... etc. Anyway, look forward to more videos!
Haha thanks! Big couple days hey! Sound wise it's still better than the Hilux (in my opinion) so probably doesn't bother us as much haha. Luckily it did actually already come with a heavy duty clutch and a tune, we forgot to mention those two in the video but are probably two of the things we should have haha. New exhaust is DEFINITELY on the very long list haha. It should be going in for it's first mods soon (ARB bull bar, side steps, winch etc) before we head down to Tassie in a few months for the canopy!
Pathetic
😂 Cheers for the engagement on your channel Glen. Just went on your UA-cam channel to see how we could improve seeming as we are so "pathetic" and you seem to be the expert but found nothing. Haters gonna hate but would rather be a doer than a hater 🤪
Congratulations on the engagement guys! 🎉🍻So good and a classic response 😂 Good to see a vid pop up and see what you’re up to. Can’t wait to see the red dawg build and adventures to follow.
Thanks Jono! Can't wait to share the build... and Shaneo's looking forward to not crawling around in the hot dirt under the Rufflux anymore haha.
Hey guys, congratulations on the new car and your engagement. Curious as to why a 79 series over say a 200 series ?
Thanks so much! Easy question! Because it’s already a Ute haha. We’d happily have got a 200 series but we prefer a canopy set up to a wagon when touring and chopping cars is expensive business haha.
A land cruiser is really the only vehicle you want if you're touring around Australia 👌
Depends on what you’re doing, we don’t feel the cost is 100% necessary if you’re not towing etc. The old hilux when she’s not towing runs a dream! But a landcruiser is definitely the best option when it comes to flexibility on what you can do hey.
Congradulations
Thanks Bob!
Lovely to see you both again, congratulations on the engagement. Exciting times for you I'm going back to Tassie on Thursday for another two weeks Fishing and trying to sell my car over there. Fisheries are upgrading the ramp at Little Pine, the concrete ramp is finished, they're just completing the wooden jetty alongside it and then will raise the water levels back up. Looking forward to your next update ❤
Hey Phil!! Thanks so much! We are so so jealous you're heading back to Tassie. We miss it down there so much. It's a bit of a logistical nightmare when your two favourite places in the country are at polar opposites haha. Thanks for always following along Phil, we really appreciate the support.
Sooooo friggin good to have yall back! So, why a 79 and not another type of 4wd?
Look we’d happily get a 200 or 300 series and chop it into a Ute but that costs even more money haha! Best power and practicality for anything we could want to do in the future.
@lifeina4wd AM looking but can't see. Happens when visual impairment is a thing 😊
