“Controlled hallucination” is such a misguided and self-contradictory way to describe what is, basically, an argument for indirect realism. (If ALL perception is a hallucination, the concept of “hallucination” loses any meaning.)

The description you provided for the vintage-style illustration sounds fantastic! It effectively captures the essence of the philosophy of science with historical context and visual elements. Here are some additional thoughts and suggestions: Historical Figures: Consider specific historical figures for the discussion, such as Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr, or perhaps Marie Curie and Isaac Newton. You can choose figures who represent contrasting viewpoints or who collaborated significantly. Symbolic Elements: In addition to atoms, planets, and laboratory equipment, you could include: Scales to represent the balance between theory and observation Open books or scrolls symbolizing the historical record of scientific knowledge Telescopes or microscopes for scientific exploration Gears or cogs to represent the interconnectedness of scientific disciplines Clarity and Reality: You could use visual cues to represent these concepts: Rays of light emanating from scientific instruments or equations to symbolize clarity Solid, three-dimensional objects contrasted with wispy clouds or abstract shapes to signify reality A magnifying glass focusing on an object to represent the pursuit of clarity in understanding Overall Composition: Consider the setting for the discussion. Is it a bustling laboratory, a quiet library, or a serene outdoor space? You could use the background to further emphasize the theme - perhaps a blackboard filled with equations for an academic setting. Color Scheme: A muted color palette with warm tones would evoke a vintage feel. Accents of gold or silver could highlight important elements. By incorporating these suggestions and the details in your initial description, you can create a truly captivating and informative illustration that captures the essence of the philosophy of science. Regarding the citations: The citations you provided seem unrelated to the image description. They might be from your research on the topic, but they don't directly connect to the visual elements you mentioned. If you'd like help finding relevant references for a vintage-style illustration, I can't search for images myself today, but I can suggest some resources: Websites: The Public Domain Review (publicdomainreview.org/) offers free, high-resolution images in the public domain. The Smithsonian Institution Archives (siarchives.si.edu/) has a vast collection of historical photographs and illustrations. Books: "Scientific Illustration" by Robert Falk ([ISBN 0-911505-22-5]) "The Art of Science Illustration" by William Ober, W. Stephen Coleman ([ISBN 9780309078927]) Let me know if you have any other questions or would like to refine the description further!

A bee is "conscious" of whatever its senses produce in its brain. It sees or smells. The neural circuits are connected to nerves that produce mobility, and the bee sets out to find honey.

Thanks for posting this, very thoughtful discussion with keen and applicable insights. About the first part, personally I feel living forever, or even a very long time, would be hellish. I do wonder though, as a counter-argument, if the meaning crisis of an eternal life is soluble - if eternity is enough time to solve any impediment to a good or meaningful existence in eternity? I guess I am imagining a progression of problem-solving, expansion, and progress, in the Deustchian sense.

Tim completely overlooked important philosophical questions in ontology, sounded as a physicist wan-be than a lover of wisdom. Quantum physics clearly demonstrates experimentally the vanity of positivism as the sole criterion of truth in epistemological research. His is an outdated relic of Newtonian empiricism. What about observer effect on the collapse of the wave function signifying the role of consciousness in the midst of being? Particle entanglement? Wow this was the least enlightening if not sorely vacuous lecture I have ever heard regarding the philosophical significance of physics.. Is that how unphilosophical some supposedly good academic philosophers have become nowadays? Wasted my time...

+-35mins there is something fundamentally flawed with the symmetrical view of the ouroborous. I know because I made one similar myself. However mind supervenes on nature, and nature prescribes the natural laws; it is not the (mental) laws that prescribe nature. The main question that drove my quest was the question of which 'space' is 'larger': the mind space or the matter in spacetime? Matter is fundamental, as mind supervenes on it. So Spinoza's view of Nature. However combinatorially the mind and its imagination is WAY richer than nature. We can imagine more than can physically exist, in way more variations and 'colors'. So the mind is richer than nature, but nature is larger than mind

Say what you just said that at the beginning say once upon a time because that's about as much information as it sounds like you have in your brain if you'd like me to tell you the whole story I can . But most never do because they justify the fact that they believe no one could actually know or have the facts and even if I told you'd probably go from fear to anger to denial. I could tell you I could tell you how the universe started where we are what's around us who made us where we go when we die.

Self-evidently, we can be described as "naturally autonomous entities". Our persistence fundamentally depends on us having the capacity to detect our situation. Essentially, a detection event can be regarded as a change of physical state triggered by a specific contact. Naturally occurring detection mechanisms appear to be rather exclusive to living entities. From the inside, the situational detection events that occur within our physiology are subjective experiences, rather than accessible objective occurrences. From the outside, the VERY SAME events are accessible objective occurrences, rather than subjective experiences. In contrast with all other physical events observed in nature, these uniquely dichotomous detection events seem to be an ontological anomaly. Because of this, whenever we conceptually abstract and label our own subjective experiences for purposes of self-reflection and discussion, we unwittingly make them seem as though as they are ontologically different to the objective detection events occurring within our own physiology. In other words, to us, the detection events seem "physical", and the experiences seem "non-physical". Because this is not actually the case, the field of cognitive neuroscience remains profoundly unsuccessful in observing the mechanism(s) responsible for (what they assume is) an objective detection event giving rise to a subjective experience, leading to the appearance of what has come to be known as the "hard problem of consciousness". Empirically, all there is to find are these naturally autonomous entities, with uniquely dichotomous situational detection events occurring within them. Other than the simple fact that we ARE such entities, there is no reason why it feels like anything for us to be alive. This realisation is the dissolution of the "hard problem".

Its is a product of culture and industry and is causing significant harm. Even chair of dsm 4 Allen Frances is on record apologising for the mess of massive over diagnosis we see today that he helped create.

I'm more interested in what blue/red/yellow is in the brain, because those signals that represent blue is also just constructed out of electromagnetic waves. No matter how complex I think up of a algorithm, I never see blue emerge within it's parameter transformations, no matter how complex the contrast ratio algorithm is, the quantities still look like quantities... I would say blue/red/yellow is probably something more to do with reality than we think. We all can think of contrast ratios, and a parallel distribution of parameter transformations acting on contrast ratios, but no where in that does color become a output, color is likely tied to something physical with respect to electromagnetism, it might be a real feature, rather than just a reconstruction (ratios are reconstructions, but I'm not so sure color (itself) is a reconstruction).

54:00 Absolutely crucial & awesomely-clarified distinction between intelligence & consciousness. People mix up the two all the time. Properly understood (as here) - you see that even AI & consciousness have nothing to do with each other. Side note - folk also mix up very sophisticated algorithms & connected feedback & actuation systems - _but still simply algorithms_ - with 'AI'. For example - Boston Dynamics' Atlas robot & all the gymnastics it can do. It's not AI - just because it's a bipedal & capable robot!
