Great video with top tips. Would have had the whole job done in a couple of hours if there wasn't a small problem the new PowerMaster cylinder not pumping but after a quick call to Luke it was resolved by blowing compressed air into the clutch pipe feed hole.
Just ordered a spring... Sounds like a joyous job according to the comments 😂😂
I suppose it is a lot easier to do this on a car with the steering wheel on the left...the right side 😆
He must have had got an old soft spring and painted it green. Well I did manage it after 5 hours!! I clamped the spring in a vice so the two end were parallel and used two strong zip ties to hold them in that position. Then the hard part - getting the pins into the holes without breaking the ties or the spring jumping out of the lower slot. Very light now though.
Will this work on a Series?
Jesus! You missed out the bit about joining a gym and spending 6 months working on your hands and thumbs! It took 1.5 hours and much swearing to get the two ends of the spring into the bushes. An instant change to the amount of force required to use the clutch. Well worth it for the cost 👍
Thanks for the video, I'm about to install a lof shaft to my puma. A question about the loctite, should I use red one or blue one😅? I got loctite 290, which is blue. I read that red one has higherer locking strength.
Hi Genwei, Loctite Blue 243 will be sufficient!
@@lofclutches4156 many thanks.
Why dont you show us how to do it with everything in situ in the footwell....that would be great.
We could do this but it would be very hard to video and keep focus on the spring in a dark footwell!
@@lofclutches4156 It's hard enough to get one gorilla into the footwell, let alone a second one with a camera!
Excellent video I ve fitted mine with the pedal box out as it’s a total nightmare in a puma,I fitted a grease nipple to the pedal pivot pin as it was very stiff, now works well but the only way it works is with the pedal high,if you adjust to landrovers spec the clutch bites just off the floor?
Thanks for the great feedback Sean! Yes indeed, for the POWERmaster the pedal will have to sit higher than original, how high is determined by how worn the clutch is.
Thanks a lot for this video. I just completed replacing both the master and slave clutch cylinders on my nephews Defender. Went for the option of doing it in situ, and only had to call on help on removing and fitting the lower of the two bolts holding the master cylinder on. Still a pain on one with a 5" lift kit, but didn't fancy the option of removing the pedal box to do it.
Not quite as easy as you made it look on my 110 puma. But it's done after lots of swearing and sheer bloody-mindedness.
Why is this not on every manual clutch vehicles??
Most manual vehicles have a clutch return spring, we just designed one stronger to help with assisting the weight of the clutch!
Bit of a PITA if you can't use it with a new clutch
Just fitted the master cylinder and it now difficult to select a gear, i am hoping its just needs adjusted , i put the nylock nut on as suggested in video just onto the end of the thread , the pedal is high but i think if i adjust it down more the selecting of the gears will be more difficult. Can you suggest anything. Gerry
Just fitted mine - what a phaf getting the two springs seated - I ended up locking a small set of mole grips on to one of the spring ends, then locked a second set of mole grips onto the first set, and with that I was able to enough force seat each ending to its bush.
Hi do you know where I can buy replacement bushes?
Hi there, yes we have them as a pack of 3 on our site for around £3.50
Just trying to fit mine now 99 TD5 snd feeling violent towards the guy in this video suggesting it’s easy My thumbs are dead and not got anywhere near getting it in yet
Without the help of an assistant or Go-go-gadget arms, does removing the pedal box make the job easier? Thanks in advance!
Yes its possible to do it this way! But it is not impossible to do it on your own leaving the pedal box in place :)
Which one is more effective? Replacing the master or slave cylinder for the power version
So they both have the same outcome, on the TD5 we would suggest the slave + spring as it is easier to change!
Excellent. Very useful vid. I have seen some videos suggesting you take out the pedal box and i guess once out it would be easier. However good to know the job can be done with the box in situ.
Did you end up replacing the MC in situ or did you remove the pedal box? Thanks in advance!
Actually I tried re bleeding the existing system after topping up the fluid. It was just to see if I could identify where the leak might be before getting underway. Well so far the clutch is working as normal. No doubt there could still be a leak but whilst it’s working I have decided to leave it for now. However having seen various videos of how to I think when I come to do the job I will remove the pedal box. At least then, whilst a bigger job, it will be easier to inspect all round, repair, repaint etc and ensure all is sound, but that means the vehicle off the road for longer.
My clutch at the moment is worn in, but what do I need to do when it needs relacing on a Discovery TD5
You will need to revert back to a standard one for a few thousand miles
Does fitting this clutch master cylinder give a much lighter clutch operation, and what is the best slave cylinder to use with this system?
hi there, yes correct it does, slave cylinder use the OEM or similar like TRW/Delphi etc
@@lofclutches4156 You do not recommend your LOF Powerslave cylinder ?

@@lofclutches4156 I have the power slave and master with power spring and a new lof clutch and I cant get the clutch to lift enough to get it in gear I have bled it till the cows come home what should I do next?
@@andyjota8906 Hi Andy, you cannot fit the POWERslave + POWERmaster together, this will be why, you need to remove one of the power units and keep 1 + the spring!
Brilliant video. My 300tdi clutch pedal is sticking down, or halfway. Going to try these tips before letting the dealer charge me an arm and a leg to fix it.
Not as easy as you would have me believe! But what I did in the end was to compress the spring in a vice and then tie the ends in with a couple of lengths of wire. Worked like a charm! Bit of experimentation but I closed the gap to about 40-45mm and it pretty much dropped straight in. There's a lot of potential energy in there so I took the precaution of putting a tying the spring to the vice so that it could only 'pop' an inch or so.
I’m on a 2.4 Puma Defender with carpets and this is impossible to fit. I’ve taken out the mats and got the pedal wedged in the carpet with the bolt almost out. I am still about 6mm short of getting the ends in. The carpets are a mission to remove as it goes up behind the centre console and over the transmission tunnel. So at a bit of a loss now. I think if you had bear metal floors it would be ok.
Rad make sure you have moved the centre tab that is not in use (old coil type spring mount) The Spring will not fall into place with pedal fully down, it will still need compressing into place, you can if needed use a cable tie to pin the spring ends together while fitting!
@@lofclutches4156 thanks for the Saturday reply! :) It’s down enough that the tab isn’t in the way (struggled to snap that off also) but my thumbs can’t compress the spring enough to make the holes…. Looking again I’m actually over 1cm away. The pedal is approximately vertical… can’t get it any further back.
*Save your thumbs* I followed all the instructions and still couldn’t compress the spring far enough. I managed to get it on by preloading the spring with some grips and holding it in place with strong zip ties first. Also opened up the the receiver tabs a little and bending them back once installed. (110 TDCi Puma)
The slide hammer adaptor doesn't fit any slide hammers as standard
HI, the slide hammer is M10 thread, same as most slide hammer kits use!
Excelente vídeo!!! Estava há algumas horas tentando, porém depois do vídeo, em 10 minutos instalei a mola.
My thumbs are destroyed
2002 td5 defender fitting. This guy's thumbs must have hulk like strength ! Clutch pedal to the metal floor , Mole grips, levers, blood , despair .... Allow yourself a good couple of hours (remember once you fatigue off the original tab there is no going back)
I just fitted one to my defender td5. The bite point is slightly lower, but im ok with it. It definitely much lighter 👌 than before
Easy job with the helpful video
Hi, can this slave unit be fitted to a standard clutch. The reason I ask is that I have a left leg problem. Thanks.
Hi Graham, yes indeed it can be fitted with any clutch, providing the clutch is bedded in and not brand new!
Cheers thanks
Hey guys. Could you do a video with the fitting of the slave cylinder?
Do you make one for a 1986 military 90?
HI Alan, I am afraid not, but you can use the LOF POWERmaster instead!
Hello and thanks for the vid. Will the cylinder work with Silicone fluid instead of brake-fluid DOT 4?
yes. in theory you can use pretty much anything within the clutch system, but i would use DOT4 for ease of fluid ownership etc. within a brake system, you need to use DOT4 as the brakes can boil the fluid due to friction/resistance (not a problem in the clutch system).
I lost my sanity trying to get this thing it, but it didn't even come close, what am I missing... (1999 td5)
Hi Finn, Have you wound the bump stop all the way out? If you need any help feel free to send us an email!
Td5 install help. Just a few tips that might help. The later td5s and pumas seem harder to do ... Few pointers Remove all the Matt's and carpets..you can just push the factory installed floor mat up past the hand brake but you need to be down to the floor panels to get the clutch to compress Remove the pedal rubber (every millimeter counts 😏) Later td5s have the long spring, they also have the rubber carpets above the pedals..don't bother trying to access the fastener that attaches the spring you will probably end up bending the panel holding the carpet in place and losing the will to live in the process,... Just snip it as close to the bolt as possible. That Jack handle he uses is perfect but needs a few blocks of wood against the seatbox to space it . (A piece of slate batten instead of the jack handle cut to length would also work) Whichever you use make sure the clutch pedal is hitting the floor panels. Even with all this done it's a still test of strength to get the spring ends in the holes.. I found doing the one nearest driver's door easiest to do and the second then goes in easier. Dont give up! It will go! Just fitted an lof extreme clutch and they are 'extremely' heavy... With the clutch spring installed it's no heavier than my fiesta. Great products👍😃😃
I just keep a length of timber under the seat to wedge the pedal down. Also good for testing brake lights
excellent tips for removing air from the system. Thank you so much
It’s a ten minute job……..unless you have carpets! Good improvement though !
Please tell me how you did it!?
Cool!! I think I must be the only Tdci owner who had grease on the splines from the factory? My original is in great condition.. still might get one of these though? If only the factory had greased them on the line.. they even list a special grease for it FFS!!
Just fitted mine Luke, went in easy, noticed the difference for sure. Next job is the power save.
Are you sure it was a LOF spring??
will you add the link where I can buy it?

Even with the bolt removed from the back of the pedal box completely the spring is nowhere near close enough to get into the bushes by hand. Am I missing something? It's a 2004 td5
I had same problem and I think the video and instructions significantly understates the difficulty that may be encountered in some cases caused by the differences in dimensional consistency of Defenders. My Puma was impossible to fit and I’ve reinstalled the original.
I used a pair of long nosed mole grips, and a piece of wood to keep the clutch to the deck. It was a struggle but managed it.
Can you do fitting instruction for the 300tdi Discovery?
İs it suitable for discovery td5 2003 ?
Hey no it will not but you can use the LOF POWER slave :)
Hey, Luke! Nice vid, still waiting for some to be back in stock. Just a filming tip, since the electric frequency is 50Hz in UK, you can avoid flicker by setting a shutter speed to multiple of 50, eg. 1/50, 1/100, 1/150. :)
very good and clear video thank you
