How Swan Lake Became a Symbol of Protest (feat. @UshankaShow)
When writing the score for Swan Lake in 1875, Tchaikovsky certainly had no idea that 150 years down the line this very ballet would become a symbol of anti-authoritarianism and anti-war protests. Neither did he know that not even 50 years after the ballet was first performed, the Russian Empire would seize to exist - let’s be honest, he would’ve freaked tf out. Let’s examine how this one ballet managed to go from a 1877 flop to a 2024 anti-Putin certified classic. Huge thanks to Sergei from @UshankaShow for his insights!

Not gonna lie, the 1994 movie will always be a classic to me. 🍿 The soundtrack. The emotion of it all. It was a beautiful, well told story, though they did have to fit years of the story into a hour and a half/two hour film, which would've racked my brain.
you are mentally ill
"Disney's" Anastasia? Y'know what, Disney does own that movie now, so I'll spare you the "well akshually, kerplokin".
is it not disney?? i remember my vhs having a disney logo on it but it was a pirated late soviet/early russia version so they might’ve tricked me lmao
@@shashatainment it was directed by Don Bluth (An American Tail, The Land Before Time 1, All Dogs go to Heaven, The Secret of NIHM) for 20th Century Fox. Granted the movie is such an obvious attempt to cash-in and compete with Disney (which every studio in the 90's tried) that most people think it is a Disney movie due to all the blatant signifiers: animated musical RomCom, a creepy villain with his own musical number, funny animal sidekicks, heteronormative 90's romance. Anyway, when Disney bought 20th Century Fox they became the owners of that movie in the end and it can be watched on Disney+ so the point is rendered moot.
Loved the video😳🫶🏽 thought u do some of the best vampire essays, but now I get that you’re good at essays in general✊🏽😤✨ с любовью, от женька
I believe Reid is a perfect Lestat.
I do disagree that pitt can't act. He was miserable in doing the film with Cruise...that movie was mis cast. DURST WAS THE MOVIE. The hottest gay moment in the movie more between Louis and Armand.
This is the best interview with a vampire video documentary I’ve seen 🧛♂️
Strawbery
Just wanted to say, hi 👋🏾 I'm one of the 3 Allies lmao 😂
perhaps an unpopular take: I couldnt stand lestat in either the original book or TVL. I wanted to throw hammers at him, constantly. His charms did nothing for me, and i found him obnoxious. I thought i was insane when other people talked about falling in love with lestat in TVL. But AMC's IWTV, and specifically Sam Reid, finally did what the movie and the books couldn't. I love this overdramatic frenchie. And maybe it's because they DID make him worse. Him swinging between great highs and lows of emotion, being cutting and funny and whimsical and dangerous, it's good. He's fun to hate, and that gave me permission to love him. in TVL I was constantly second guessing his perspective on things, just like I was in IWTV. just muttering to myself "oh, yeah, I bet you would frame it that way, you self aggrandizing piece of shit" but when AMC's IWTV said no, youre right, he is a self aggrandizing piece of shit! and he's everything else too" it was easier for me to go "oh, ok, well as long as everyone's aware!" and get into his antics.
OMG these videos on iwtv were so good!!!! I haven't seen any of your stuff before but now I'm in love with it. You're so funny and entertaining and interesting amazing work! Go have some strawberries as a treat
The show has depth that the film doesn’t. But the film is lush and aesthetically beautiful, and I wish the show had engaged with the visual lushness.
I always appreciated that anne didn't shy away from the reality of vampires, yes they're beautiful but they are also dangerous. Lestat regularly phsycologically tortures and breaks the bones of his victims and many of the vampires are willfully cruel
I think AMC did a great job with sticking with book as much as possible . Yes they changed the timeline and the age of Claudia for the mature material in the books but everything was spot on with everything in the show and they were able to show the gay characters undertones the movie wasn’t allowed to show
Yea all they did is fundamentally change Claudia's entire identity as a character. That's all. Aside from that it's spot on.
The interesting thing about Rice's vampires fucking, is that in the main series of books, yes the drink is their only sexual expression. In Pandora though, her and Marius actually have piv sex, and Rice says that although their biology doesn't permit erections per se, that the penis is just as rock like as the rest of their bodies. The "New Tales of the Vampires" aren't canon to the rest of the series apparently though.
Let my vampire be queer
I’m so excited for season 3 and I genuinely cannot explain to you the serotonin and dopamine Long Fangs gives me 🍓
So there WILL be a third season??? Yay 😭🥹
I absolutely loved this!!! I’m always to late to things (3 months late to this LOL) but Anne rice has taken over my heart so this was very fun and the overanalysing nerd in me is satisfied 🍓🍓🍓🍓🍓
Just binged season 1, great video and good luck with your channel
The "Vampire Lestat" was part of the chronicles. It is how Lestat grew up and became a vampire. His mom was in the book, too.
This show has me gripped by the throat (no pun intended)
I love your mic, where is it from?
if you’re talking ausio-wise, it‘s the cheapest cable lavalier i could find + a lot of work in post, if you‘re talking about the visuals, i just clamped it to a rommate’s vampire-themed spoon
Gurl obviously the movie. Not even a question
Swan Lake created in a time of European nationalism and militarism, and when I'm considering the 1877 libretto with so many details like when Siegfried is destroying the crossbow...well, how Swan Lake got later used for propaganda is definitely kind of irony. I also agree with the theme of this kind of unrequited love. But I think Tchaikovsky represented himself both as Siegfried and probably even more as Odette. In my opinion, The White swan is not fantasy and I do not like all the current productions focusing on the theme of the swans as illusions. It's rather Tchaikovsky's "hidden inner side". The Lake of tears created from mourning the mother. I feel Odette's emotions are depicted much more than Siegfried's, especially Act 4. also the disturbing ending...it's not a surprise it was a failure in 1877.
“bazinga is the war cry of their tall leader, Sheldon”
Great strawberry video, love it. You are actualli convincing me to read the books hahaha ❤❤❤
Really a fantastic in depth video, really, really, really hoping the swans will dance soon - (loved your makeup btw <3)
thanks!
Awesome work! Commenting for the algorithm

as a teen from russia myself i want to let you know how i appreciate your essays, i like your videos and i was sooo excited to watch this one. it's amazing! i never really thought about why did they always play swan lake but turned out there are so many layers. now i'm about to go back to my ballet obsession and read all of tchaikovsky's letters. currently waiting for the swans to dance on tv which i don't have but i guess we'll all know when it happens
thank u! tchaikovsky’s letters rly are a rabbit hole
Fun fact! They also played Swan lake on Syria Tv after they realized Assad had fallen
ohh that’s so interesting!! rly cool to know the tradition is expanding & the swans are bringing good news to people around the globe
Brilliant video, I never really thought about the significance of Swan Lake on TV
Gods, I used swan lake as a protest back in highschool. It originally was a protest against fascism, and fighting to help people exist as gay, trans, etc (themes of transformation, hopelessness). We painted swans swimming in red water on canvas to make patches for jackets. Some people eventually painted their swans with pride and related flags. But it eventually also came to encapsulate CSA (theme of the main villain transforming people against their will, and abandoning his "collection" in the pool of tears). I thought we were just being subversive, since our community was very conservative. It's amazing and almost obvious it's use as protest in Russia, and I fully embrace their protest meaning. I love it.
Your production value seems really high so I it really doesnt make sense to me how you only have that few subscribers. Im sure youre just one viral video away from being discovered, praying for the algorithm 🙏
idk to me 4 thousand random people is already big tbh, but thanks a lot!
Those swans protesting the anti-gay laws really had me tearing up. So many years removed from the pain that originally spawned this beloved piece and still people see and connect with its themes and use them to protest for a better tomorrow. Really excellent video
Most interesting video essay I've seen in ages
thank you!
Бесконечных двадцать лет Мы с надеждой ждем балет

i'm actually baffled at the lack of interaction this video has, like this is one of the best video essay i've seen in a LONG time. let those swans dance!
