"Don't Cry, Jennifer" from Clock Tower, Sega Genesis remix

Sega Genesis / Mega Drive arrangement of "Don't Cry, Jennifer" from the game Clock Tower, originally composed by Kouji Niikura. My first Sega Genesis piece!! I wanted to capture the essence of this tune (and its inspirations in the film music by Goblin) while learning my way around FM Synth a little bit. Adapted for YM2612 SN76489 chips using Furnace, the incredible multiplatform chiptune track...
"Around the Fairy Fort" - Irish song adapted for Game Boy chiptune

Game Boy chiptune arrangement of the old Irish tune "Around the Fairy Fort" by Vincent Broderick. When I first heard this fun upbeat little song, I immediately wanted to hear it in chiptune. Along the way I learned how to make a pretty neat sounding Celtic flute in Game Boy wavetable! I built a lot of this arrangement live on Twitch. Here's my Virtual Boy chiptune arrangement of "Mario Circuit" from Super Mario Kart, composed by Soyo Oka. Made in hardware-accurate VB instructions using Furnace. This was a fun project and I tried to honor the spirit of the original tune as closely as I could, within the unique sound of the Virtual Boy, and while adding my own touch. Hope you enjoy!
"Silk Mountain," original Virtual Boy chiptune song made in Furnace

Made as a tribute to the wonderful composer Kinuyo Yamashita who worked on Castlevania among many other games. I borrowed one of Yamashita's chord progressions from her music in Power Blade 2 and wrote a new song. It grew in its own direction but I always wanted it to sound like a valid homage to Yamashita's catchy action game tunes for Konami and Natsume. Written in hardware accurate Virtual B...

Legacy of the Wizard "Overworld Theme," but it's Game Boy

As a practice project for my first Twitch streams, I rebuilt the Overworld theme from the wonderful NES game Legacy of the Wizard in hardware accurate Game Boy chiptune, using Furnace. With a ton of help from the excellent sheet music transcription by Wraize78, I tried to replicate the original song very closely, but added a bit of stereo panning (which the original NES couldn't do for technica...
"Select Scene" from Dragon Slayer IV: Drasle Family, Game Boy chiptune remix
Переглядів 946 місяців тому
Ok, so, this one is a bit obscure. The Japanese MSX version of Legacy of the Wizard, with the wonderful title Dragon Slayer IV: Drasle Family, has a different tune on the item select screen not heard in the Famicom or NES versions. I fell in love with that MSX exclusive tune (composed by Mieko Ishikawa and Yuzo Koshiro), so then I made a remixed version in Game Boy chiptune, using Furnace. Anyw...
Hydrocity Zone (Act 2) Virtual Boy Chiptune Remix

Created for a compo in Button Masher's Discord server. Our prompt was to create a new arrangement of Hydrocity Zone using any chip, tool, or synth of our choosing, so... naturally I chose Virtual Boy! Soaring Through 8-Bit Skies (NES chiptune original song)

Theme song for a nonexistent NES superhero game! I made this for a friend who loves superheroes and who also loves Mega Man 2, so I experimented using the "rounded harmonic drums" sound from that game. I tried to make something that sounded catchy and upbeat and heroic. Hope you enjoy! Made in FamiTracker using 2A03 VRC6 chip.

VERY nice. would not feel out of place in Startropics.
very cool version
Thank you!
Awesome composition! It feels like setting out for a fun adventure
Thanks g40rc3, I’m so glad you enjoyed!
I'm really enjoying those playful, call and response leads. Those, along with the handclap snare sound, keep the driving energy of this track feeling bouncy and lighthearted. Strikes me as very good, "on an adventure somewhere vibrant and maybe a little dangerous but not in a malicious way" kind of music.
Thank you! To me the tune seems to be sort of saying “we’re choosing to be positive anyway, in spite of everything,” if that makes sense at all. I’m glad you enjoyed!
@@sevencastleforest That makes perfect sense. I was thinking about it purely in terms of an environment or level theme so I read the contrast between the structure of the leads and the moodier harmonies differently, but I absolutely think you achieved what you described. I just wasn't thinking about it in narrative terms.
pleasant~ also casually maxing out the instrument bank is funny
Thanks, glad you like the tune! And yeah I got the majority of my instruments from Button Masher when he was first giving me lessons. They're from his module for his album Tracker Vision, then he helped me build a "starter kit" module from that. For his own part, BM says he got many of his instruments from Shnabubula. In practice I only end up using like ten percent of these instruments LOL but it's great having all the options there.
@@sevencastleforest i see i see. i think i can see that now. buttonmasher has quite a ... style. not sure how to describe it.
Right on! Always enjoy hearing your songs. Thank you!
Thank you so much Brian!!
Really great arrangement Seven!
Thank you so much! This is maybe one of the more straightforward pieces I've made in terms of the arrangement. I kept thinking about adding more trickery but the melody didn't really call for much more embellishment as I kept listening to it. I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent! The echoing, stereo, instrument choice, and subtle background elements make such an atmospheric piece
Thank you so much 🙏
Fantastic work, those drums and the echoing screams sound especially fantastic. The genesis sound card has always struck me as pretty temperamental, like it's very easy for it to produce really uncomfortable frequencies if a lot of care isn't taken, so it's really impressive that you got such a great sound your first time using it.
Thank you! In this case I had the benefit of working with a nice modern tracker tool in an interface familiar to me, and borrowing instrument sounds from other demo songs made in Furnace. I definitely made an effort to avoid some of the harsh or overly metallic sounds that people associate with Genesis FM synth, while trying to preserve the air of malice in this piece. Thanks for listening!
AWESOME. love it!
Thanks Burst, I'm so glad you enjoyed this piece!
Awesome version of this, great job bringing out the beauty of the Genesis.
Thank you so much! I tried to present the Genesis sound in the best light I could, and I think it was a good learning experience!
Nice! The PSG-esque portamenti are so good.
Thank you! It was fun taking some of the techniques I've learned working on NES/Game Boy/etc and utilizing them in a Genesis piece.
I haven't played Clock Tower before, but from what little I know about it, this is a great fit for its vibes. Nice work as always!
Thanks for the kind words Hungry! The game is a really neat mix of point-and-click adventure with scary horror moments. You might enjoy it if you try it! However it was never originally released in the US so I'm not sure what hackery would be required to play it on original hardware in English.
This is so good! Great job!
Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad you liked it!
omg? a clock tower 1 remix? this sounds very accurate. i am super impressed. good job.
Thank you so much! It always means a lot to me hearing such nice things from you 👍
@@sevencastleforest awwww dw~ i feel your musical prowess and knowledge is very much above average (in the best way)
Great job with this tune. Really impressive work. Interesting game.
Thank you so much, Brian! Glad you enjoyed it 🖤
this is a really great visualizer!
Thanks, it is nsfpresenter by nununoisy which you can find for free online here: github.com/nununoisy/nsf-presenter-rs It's also a fantastic tool for analyzing and learning about classic NES music, like you could run the Mega Man 2 music through it to see exactly what they're doing, if you wanted.
@@sevencastleforestill check it out!
This is really cool. I find it interesting they used the Sawtooth channel for base but didn’t add anything back into the Triangle channel. Was there a technical reason for this? Either way, it’s insane how much of a difference two pulse channels and a sawtooth channel make.
To my knowledge there’s no technical reason why they couldn’t have used the Triangle channel. Lots of other VRC6 tracks by modern chiptune composers use it. I’m not aware of any interviews explaining why either. Konami may have just wanted to really showcase the Sawtooth channel in their fancy chip since they were adding into the cartridge at additional manufacturing expense.
@@sevencastleforestThanks for the super fast reply! The part about wanting to showcase the shiny new VRC6 chip sounds about right. Since the triangle channel is left out there’s none of the famous high frequency overtone from the DAC. I could see them specifically NOT wanting that sound present to showcase a new chipset. Even if that means sacrificing a channel.
What a great track, I really like the alternating echo/delay being done with the pulse channels . So many of these old games had fantastic menu/password screen music. Also I really like that stepped sawtooth bass line, and it's really cool to actually see how you did the half volume notes in the visualizer.
Thank you! In this case I was trying to capture the feeling of the original MSX tune as closely as I could, then I realized I wanted to spice things up with some drums and a bit more structure. It’s still a simple piece in some ways but I really like it. I always use it for a cozy vibe at the start of my Twitch streams.
Wonderful track! My favorite part is definitely those shimmering pulse wave arpeggios, that's such a cool effect.
Thank you so much, I’m glad you enjoyed it! I love those rapid arpeggios too. A trick mostly pioneered by Martin Galway and others working on the Commodore 64, and it became one of the most distinctively “chiptune” sounds…
Virtual Boy 🎉 you keeping the memory alive 😊
*HAPPIEST SONG EVER CREATED! THIS TRIBUTE IS SOOOOO SWEEEEEEET!*
Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it so much ❤
As a kid, I always loved it whenever I heard familiar tunes from the real world turn up in chiptune form. The most obvious examples I can think of are the soundtrack in Lemmings, the Cyndi Lauper cover that plays as one of the main tunes in Goonies II (a childhood favourite game of mine), and the music in various wrestling games from the 8-bit / 16-bit era. As far as Around the Fairy Fort goes, I don't ever remember hearing it before, but this chiptune version manages to evoke the Irish flute sound very inventively, and as a result that part adds to the overall Celtic feel of the piece. I always enjoy hearing the latest creations of SevenCastleForest!
Glad you enjoyed! Yeah I love the NES wrestling soundtracks (a lot of them arranged by David Wise at Rare) as well as the Goonies 2 music by Konami. Thanks so much for listening to my stuff!
I really like this arrangement, especially that bit with the second pulse channel at around the 29 second mark. I'm always happy to hear that sound in a chiptune. That, along with all the bouncy little appoggiaturas, makes the whole thing sound so upbeat. As a side note I really like that this software shows the waveforms in all the channels. I've always really liked that simple, second channel delay effect and watching it in real time in the visualizer is neat.
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I think that bit you're talking about in pulse 2 around the 29 seconds mark is where I'm doing a rapid arpeggiated chord sound, one of the neat techniques that Western composers like the Follin Brothers and Alberto Jose Gonzalez brought to chiptune. But yeah the oscilloscope is a feature built into Furnace, this incredible tracker software I'm using, made by tildearrow.
@@sevencastleforest The Solstice title screen theme is actually the first place I encountered it, definitely one of the coolest sounds anyone got out of the nes soundchip.
so this is an irish song sounds good
Thank you!
@@sevencastleforest you've earned it~
Well done, I enjoy your chip tune music. Quite creative 🎉 keep it up.
Thank you! 🙏
Love the flute / whistle sound at 0:39
Thank you so much! That was definitely the hardest part to get right. It's using the Game Boy wavetable channel (which lets the composer draw their own waveform) to make a Triangle wave, then playing it at a very high pitch appropriate for a flute sound.
That's a fun little tune, works really well with Game Boy chiptune!
Thanks for listening and I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent work! I agree with RedAux, I really like the echo in this as well. Also, I can't help but think of meat sticks, for some reason. :D
Thank you so much!

Fun fact: A Mario kart game was planned for this system but it was cancelled
Great job, really like the echo mechanic on this one. Very cool vibes!
Thank you!
That's really cool, sorry I missed the stream! Did you do that start to finish today?
Oh no worries about missing the stream at all! And in this case I had started this piece a few weeks ago and then noodled with it periodically in between other projects, so the stream was mostly about deconstructing and analyzing the song ❤️
You should have said it’s for the MSX :) and no one would have known the difference 😂 Well done
Thanks! I contemplated adding a loud buzzing sound to make it more accurate to the Vectrex experience, but ultimately decided against it 😁
wonderful cover!
Thanks Burst, I’m so glad you liked it! ❤️
Yessssss love the inclusion of the stoplight as part of the track. I also am noticing how this is almost swing time in the way the off beats land. Dig it, great work pal!
