Engineers Without Borders Challenge
Real, current problems around globalization, climate change, and social inequality can be found in the challenges of @ingenieure_ohne_grenzen_e.v.
A team from Schmalkalden University of Applied Sciences took part for the third time this year:
WASH - water, sanitation, and hygiene in rural Sierra Leone, marked by civil war and the Ebola epidemic. Many people in the world cannot take direct access to clean toilets or clean water for granted
The team of students led by Idris Muhammad Muhammad built a prototype of the toilet block and integrated all the important requirements of the task. The students have developed a system that first stores feces and urine so that it can then be processed into natural fertilizer for agriculture
Further facts:
Substructure: made entirely of clay for a durable foundation
Upper structure: local wood (available resources, low costs)
Roof: made from palm leaves
The students are supported by mechanical engineering professor Frank Schrödel. "I am impressed by how much dedication our students put into such important problems in their free time and I am deeply impressed that the team managed to build their favorite concept as a real prototype even in sub-zero temperatures and snowfall

Intelligent robot skin

The IGUS DP5 robot is fixed with an intelligent skin developed together with ITP GmbH. The robot skin has textile-based capacitive sensors. The sensor values are collected by an Arduino and provided to the PLC through the Modbus communication protocol.
