Our trip to Bazaruto in 1971 with Dave and Beth Pfeiffer. Filmed on Super8mm. Telecine on Canon 550D ML (18fps) Audio on tape was significantly damaged.

Yes i did live there between. 1979 to 1987 a walk back though nightmare dream. Wish that could show dunkeld Greenside. Rosebank. In the 1960. Worthwhile to see. Thanks for posting

1989 was the beginning of the end....though we didn't quite know it yet. The chaos that has since developed was just beginning to be felt in Joburg even though it was nothing compared to today.
Amazing video! Sights include Windybrow (1:11), Nugget Hill (1:30) facing Cathedral of Christ the King and Doornfontein, Pullinger Kop (1:41), up Primrose Terrace in Berea (2:19) with Ridge Plaza on the right, Ponte tower seen from Berea Park (3:00). What's the park around the 10:00 mark...the Wilds? I love the inner city architecture. Sad that the area has decayed so much. Those parks should be a treasure for everyone in Joburg but instead have been left to rot.
And then all the chocolate-faced orcs came in and turned it into a living hell.

Disastrous
Not good. Many of the buildings are actually in pretty good shape but some are either highjacked or left to rot and the streets are mostly dirty and unkempt. I was in Berea Park last year and there were a lot of dodgy characters mulling about. Certainly not a place I'd find peaceful and relaxing. The Windybrow center is still in use. I'm pretty adventurous but I'd only walk around Berea during the day and in a group.
Brought back a flood of special memories. I don’t live in SA anymore but my heart is always tugged when I see such footage 😢
Nah it was Chaos back then with racism and separation black people can't do what they like in there own land, because of white forieners. stupid it's better days now with black power

En met 'n ekonomiese oplewing wat die hele land, die HELE land, weer bevoordeel het. Na die val van vriendelike lande soos Mosambiek en Rhodesië is die land se ekonomie egter, benewens die einde van die goud-dollar-standaard in die internasionale monetêre stelsel in 1971, erg geraak en het nie teruggekeer na die uitstekende prestasie van voorheen nie, in 'n chroniese krisis in die 80's. Om nie eens te praat van die definitiewe styging in oliepryse, waarvan Suid-Afrika nog altyd afhanklik was nie. Daarom sou dit nie meer moontlik wees om 'n polisiestaat vir so lank te handhaaf nie, met verdedigingsbesteding wat eksponensieel groei, asook die gewig van internasionale sanksies. In hierdie verband het die einde van die USSR in 1991 baie gehelp om die oorgang na postapartheid sonder 'n burgeroorlog in die AFR moontlik te maak. Van die Suide en verder kan Namibië gered word deur hom onafhanklikheid te gee sonder dat dit val soos dit byvoorbeeld met Angola en Zimbabwe was. Mag die Boereland weer opstaan en 'n land van voorspoed word, groete uit Brasilië. 🇧🇷
Wow I never knew that Jozi looked this beautiful back then, it's almost unbelievable. It really breaks my heart to it at this state now. always hear my grandmom say that this place used to be one of the best places in the world.

I moved to Jozi in 1992, and it was an awesome place for 10 years. Going back in late 2009, it was sad to see the decay and rot.

To be fair, that area was already going downhill long before 1994. People were moving out of Berea and Hillbrow even in the 80s/early 90s because of crime. I would agree the ANC has done nothing to improve these old suburbs and things have only gone from bad to worse, but it's not like things were perfect in 1994 either.
A beautiful perfect first world country! Now, sadly a filthy, dirty, corrupt third world country. 😪

Good ol Bez Park. I lived in Cyrildene around the corner. Was 7 years old and in my first year of school when this was filmed. Amazing how clean and orderly everything looked even back then. Cut grass and no litter

They had their homelands (where the different tribes settled when they arrived here from Central Africa) which their traditional leaders DEMANDED and got, when THEY insisted on SEPARATE DEVELOPMENT. Some of them even declared their homelands independent republics. And then there was white South Africa (where the Europeans settled when they arrived here), the Powerhouse of Africa, of which NOTHING is left today. Get educated. It's the right thing to do.

To be fair, most of the high rise buildings were an architectural cancer even back then, the only sensible thing left to do now is to level the whole Hillbrow area and rebuild it completely.

Mmmmmm. Those were the days when there was peace and no crime. My girlfriend used to live in Berea opposite that park and it was so safe. Now the whole country is a shithole of filth, crime, torture, murder and rape. I'm so glad we fled that God forsaken place end 2018.

Me and my father lived in Highpoint flats in Hillbrow in the early 80s then moved to Ponte after that.Those were considered the luxury apartments in those days and if you lived there you were doing well.Now it's sadly all a mess.

Our family flats were Woodlands, the first flats at the bottom of Stewart Drive, so the whole garden went back up the koppie. Thanks for the memories.

No, Rule of Law means that people are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. You can't lump people together in your mind & accuse them without evidence. The sovereignty of the individual means each one can feel & think freely for themselves, thank you.
The joy is that the country was run properly and is was clean and safe. Now your ANC buddies have wrecked the entire country. I miss those days when we were safe. I don't miss the old government though.
