Comparing two Dobson 1867 patent early banjos
A friend of mine sent me his Dobson 1867 that he bought while out of the country to hold for him until he’s able to come pick it up.
These are beautiful and wonderful sounding banjos, but my friend’s in particular is VERY beautiful and likely one of a kind.

This was made by the Cole Makers of Boston Massachusetts in the mid 1890s, after the split up of the Fairbanks and Cole Makers company in 1890. Very nicely played, Blaine, and I can see why English banjo makers like William Temlett took such a shine to it when one of the Dobsons (sorry, forgotten which one) demonstrated it to them around 1868, and started making their own copies kicking off the zither-banjo craze which lasted from the last two decades of the 19th Century to around 1940 and isn't dead yet!

@@blainechappell5383 Well I bought an AC Mini and I love the thing. It makes it really easy to practice outside in beautiful places, where it would be a little cumbersome to take a standard banjo. I really like the G tuning. I ordered mine from Gold Tone with a scoop. Gold Tone charged $75 to install one, and it looks great. To my ear, the tone of the banjo was a little hollow for clawhammer. So I threw a sock in the resonator, and I really like the sound now. This banjo is a keeper for me.

What issue did you have? I have a ac12 which I assume uses the style tailpiece. My main issue was that it had sharp burrs that would cut strings, used some needle files and wet sandpaper and they're as smooth as can be now and haven't cut any strings, running it with minstrel nylguts tuned down a few steps. Plan to get the ac12-fretless when it's back in stock. Was your issues mainly tying the strings? I had trouble with that early on but found an easy way to do it with a pair of pliers as a third hand.
