Octavia Butler is one of the most beautiful souls to ever create art. I’m so glad I found my way to her books. The way she writes makes falling into a story so easy and cathartic. I’m reading through “Parable of the Sower” now, my first time. I know she passed a few years ago 😔 so I came here to hear her voice. I miss Octavia Butler’s presence in this world. I think she’s one of the best American writers of our generation.

watching her interviews makes me think of how part of being a successful writer, particularly a Black woman writer at that time (and now) has to do with meeting incompetence and thinly veiled hostility with cleverness and grace. i wish there were more recorded interviews of her speaking with actually good interviewers who were excited about her work and connected with it but her navigation of what was is so skillful!

["Parable of the Sower", by Octavia Butler, MAKE the movie! ] we need to make "Parable of the Sower" into a movie! why is it not ALREADY a movie?! this lady saw the future some 30+ years ago... well, that future is now, or almost now, like tomorrow, maybe a couple of years from now, but it's coming, as inevitable as an atmospheric river, blizzards in LA, massive widespread poverty, food riots, the scarcity of potable water, raging fires, guns, the whole kit'n'caboodle... it's happening right now, just getting rolling! you can hear the vast multitudes around the world, migrating, trying to live, be alive, have a life, families, friends, enemies, they are all moving, look at the borders... their porosity is only going to increase... can't stop it, this tsunami cannot be stopped... this lady saw the future, with the clarity of a vision, if we don't make this book into a movie right now, then no book should have ever been made into one

Man, what a god awful interviewer. The questions he asked had nothing to do with the book, as if he skimmed it and saw the praise: reducing it to "black science-fiction" when the topics of race, are only a fraction of the whole of the work. On top of that, he keeps fucking interrupting her despite having nothing to say and the question of "Why Science-Fiction?" is so trite and condescending. Like, I don't know: maybe this is a story that can only be told through those narrative devices and putting it into a box, is reductive and pretentious. Also, "You must be on a self-improvement kick" REALLY? Is it an abnormality for someone to want to read and learn new things, outside of their typical wheelhouse? What a sniveling, racist, little piece of shit.

This is a really nice interview. I'm sorry that a pivotal part of this conversation was lost and wasn't picked back up!! At 18:41 the interviewer asks, "Is it possible for black people, or people of color, to formulate visions of the future that are both liberating and purposeful?" Octavia responds "Of course" , I don't even know what else to say about that, I mean, WE BETTER!! Judy Dash..."Well, given the present situation of people of color around the world, shouldn't we be more concerned with dealing with the problems of the present rather than the future?" Octavia Butler....Well, if that's what we do, then we'll go on having some pretty nasty problems in the future". After which, tells the story of a friend of hers who doesn't want her kid to learn Spanish in school....Here is where it gets cut off, but essentially she says something that I think many of us NEED to hear today, which is that we cannot continue to think small, or from a place of lack, because when we do, we do ourselves "a lot of harm"....we MUST begin to vision more in the future. A much better one, and then make it happen.
