Might benefit from using axe head lube or WD-40 so it doesn't get stuck; nice splitting brother

Flip it. Before you try the wedge. Look for a natural crack in the wood. I'm not sure if you know that not trying to help you out.

Bro get that Iso-core maul as a companion to your axe. That oak would have rocketed apart with the power you're able to put in a swing.

Making it look easy,. Got a 12" x 14" English oak. Been trying now for the passed day trying to split it with a 8lb maul axe. Never used one, always used a splitting axe until I broke the handle. Any tips on the use of a maul axe?

Never had a problem splitting any kind of oak. Try splitting ELM...OMG twisted grain is tough to split. Oak has straight clean grain.

One of the two black birch trees fell on my property during that late season noreaster this past winter. Never burned the stuff, but interested to see how it burns this year. It does dry fast, most of the splits are below 20%

Itll save your back from that jerky motion if you start with the axe head along your back, making a full swing instead of a half swing, allows you to put energy into the axe slower and doesnt require you to lift the axe straight up

  • @Wookinpanub235

Oh yeah those natural splits are helpful. I’ve been working on some very large white oak rounds with the same maul. That white oak is a different animal from red oak. Those fiber strands are brutal in the white oak and much harder to get clean splits without several strands holding it up. Definitely wears you out quicker. I have 4 large oaks on the ground that Ive been working on little bit every evening after work.
