Birch Dovetail Chest, Part 7
Переглядів 3842 роки тому
Just got to finish up the chest by installing the hardware and - OMG I cut myself 😫 !!! I apologize in advance for the grizzly scene (off camera, and I'm exaggerating; it's just a nick). After the hinges and clasp, we butter it up and shoot some glam shots. Thanks for watching! Btw, here is my critique of my far from perfect birch dovetail chest. First off, on the whole I am pleased with how it...

Birch Dovetail Chest, Part 5

This one prolly isn't SFW. I get in close. Might be too close for some. We finish the pins, then perform our first dry fit. But I'm tellin' ya, it's steamy.
Birch Dovetail Chest, Part 4

First a quick recap of cutting the tails. Then you'll see how far I go to get a nice firm set up before marking the pins. Next we hog out the waste with the fret saw, and nibble away at the remainder with the chisels. And if it ain't a nice fit (it's not) I'll show you how to make room for those tails.

Out comes the dovetail saw, the fret saw, and then the chisels as we start cutting the first of many dovetails. Extreme closeups ensue.
Birch Dovetail Chest, Part 2

Today we plane away the center strip left over from resawing, cut our lumber to size, and mark out some dovetails on our Birch dovetail chest project.
Birch Dovetail Chest, Part 1

I woke up this morning and decided that old piece of birch that's been laying around the shop should be turned into something useful. I have only ever made topless boxes and slide top boxes so I figure it's about time I learn how to make a proper top. This chest will feature dovetail corners and a lid with hinges if everything goes well. Stick with me; in this first video, we mill the lumber.
Work Bench Glue Up

A time lapse of the glue up of the work bench I am building to hold a lathe and when it's not doing that to work as an extension to my table saw.
Upright Pencil Holder

Sit back and enjoy the footage and the journey. I mean, it's a pencil holder folks. I added some pets for extra zen. This was shot on my new Fujifilm X-T4 in 4k @ 60p so you could fully immerse yourself in sawdust without actually leaving your couch. Pencils gotta be held somewhere people!

Apogee Duet FireWire running on Big Sur

UPDATE: while this still worked on Monterey, it appears to have come to a hard stop on Ventura. But if anyone can prove otherwise, please leave me a comment. I’m also hearing that it has never worked on M1 Macs, so the usefulness of this video is coming to an end as the install process requires old hardware and now also old software. I install a fresh copy of macOS 11 Big Sur and show you the p...

I believe that was the tightest dovetail joint I've seen lately, very detailed video but the skill you showed with the final joint being so precise, absolutely amazing!
Josh, I would love to know where you got the dovetail guide you used in this video, being clear just makes more sense to me and I would like to have one in my shop?
Will this work on Monterey?
I've got all of the Lie Nielson saws, and the Veritas saws, and I've got 12 Japanese saws including the one you're using to cut those dovetails with. That is my go to saw to cut half blind dovetails with. I've also cut many through dovetails with that saw. If you're having problems with the Katz-Moses dovetail jig slipping with you, cut some 350 grit sand paper to fit the legs on it and use some contact glue to hold the paper to the legs. I have to use the jig now because of a permanent injury to my right hand. Thanks for sharing your video.
hi, I have the same sound card and the "maestro 2" software can't find it even though the lights on the card come on, could you help me?
have you the install software?
I've got that same saw and use it to cut pin and half blind dovetails. I've got Lie Nielson and Veritas dovetail saws but that saw out performs all the others hands down when it comes to the smaller fine dovetails. It also performs well for larger dovetails. Thanks for sharing your video.
VERY EXCITED!!...I installed macOS Monterey on my 2012 Mac mini( late) It works perfectly. But I have never been able to use my old ApogeeDuet Fiewire on any Macos except Snow Leopard. I said to myself let me try it on the newly installed Monterey with OCLP. I then installed from the Apogee site>>> Apogee Duet FireWire Installer Downloads "Duet FireWire Software Installer - October 2014 whic supported only Mac OS X 10.10 and 10.9 only. HIGHER VERSIONS OF OS X, NOT TESTED." I never imagined I would be able to use it on Monterey with OCLP patches. To my surprise my old firewire Duet Apogee now works perfectly!! The reason why it works now I believe, is because of the following Kext that has been installed with OCLP... .:"Explaining the patches in OpenCore Legacy Patcher" Injected Kext Firewire • IOFireWireFamily ◦ Reason: Allows for FireWire Boot Support • IOFireWireSBP2 ◦ Reason: Allows for FireWire Boot Support • IOFireWireSerialBusProtoColTransport ◦ Reason: Allows for FireWire Boot Support THANK YOU OCLP AND MR MACINTOSH! I've watched many UA-cam videos on how to get your old Apogee Duet to work on unsupported Macs with a lot of things you should buy and try which may or may not work. But, now, just install and upgrade your mac to Monterey(or Higher?) with OCLPc and it works perfectly. I hope this works for anyone willing to try it, rather than not be able to use,(BECAUSE OF PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE) older products like the first Duet apogee firewire.
Great job! I enjoyed that. What chisels are you using?
Stanley Sweethearts
Undoubtedly, definitely, masterpiece
It was my favorite interface! Sounded better than duet 2 and quarter … just musical
The explanation is clear and very consistent, we can see the cut close to the marking line, which helps to understand where the other piece will be fitted. What is the name of the wood?
Dude. THANK YOU! I was literally about to order the Duet 3 until I saw this video. Apogee's support page has a lot deleted since this device is so old. It gives me pains anytime there's a new update, but that did the trick! Big thing was the security & privacy message/allowing the app. Kudos for helping the rest of us out :)
No problem. I eventually ended up buying the Duet 3 and I have to say I am disappointed with it. If I could do it again I would look at other brands. But maybe I’d be disappointed with the audio quality in other brands. Idk.
That’s tricky. Definitely some good interfaces out there but pricier. What we’re the downsides of the 3?
@@brownwa2 this might sound stupid but my main complaint is the 4 purple LEDs which indicate what the dial will adjust (input 1, input 2, speakers, headphones) are so dim I usually have no idea what its on and end up trial and erroring my way thru them. They are only easily visible at night with all the lights off. It sounds petty but its infuriating. Also it pops when you unplug the usb-c if you’ve left the volume up. Also I had to buy a pre amp - I think it’s less sensitive. Lastly, I use it with an Apple Studio Display and there is a bug which they know about but are never going to fix that doesn’t allow the device to be recognized when plugged into the monitor instead of the back of my Mac Studio. So when switching between work and play computers, I have to deal with 2 cables instead of one. I think that’s all.
Good to note. And understandable. Similar situations between multiple computers for me. Honestly I’m still happy with the duet it’s just annoying for software updates, the occasional phantom power loss, and having to add the adapters depending on what computer. Also this is minimal but the input / output wires get tangled every time I move it 😜 tech difficulties are expected but it can be annoying when you’re trying to create! Happy recording. Thanks again.
you save my life right now.....thank you so much....i have katalina and works with this trick
is it compatible with os monetary?
that kinda calms my nerves a bit. Because I'll order a Mac Studio M2 Max tomorrow and need to get it to work with my old Soundcraft Si Performer Console and its Multidigital Interface Card. It has FW400 and USB. But the USB is for "PC Only". So I'll order the dongles as well and hope for the best. Otherwise it will be an mega-expensive System Upgrade (New Mac + new Interfaces) for me. Thanks for this Video!
Wow good luck. I eventually bit the bullet and ordered a new Duet 3 and I have to say, I am disappointed in it. Wish I could go back to the good ol days when my orig Duet was a viable option
How did the silicon experience work for you? I'm on MBP M2 Pro Sanoma.. I tried the SIP disable method but it was blank like on this screen I'm going to give it another shot while I have nothing else to do
With Montery and a Macbook Pro M1 (2021) the installer just installs, I never get the chance to do your trick with the security and it doesn't work.
great video thank you for sharing this with us
Bravo mate ! You have Quercus!?
Thanks. Oak? For sure.
Dude, I don't know you, but I have to say I love you, thank you, worked on my ensemble firewire 🙏❤️
Hey dude ! gret content ! bro can u upload the duet firewire drive ? the website is broken =/
Ah gutted just seen your update today as my maxed out mbp 16 m1 max just arrived. Guess it's time to get a newer Duet. Unless someone has figured it out already??
I haven’t seen seen a solution. I just bought a new Mac too and a Duet 3 along with it. I’m happy with it.
@@joshwetenkamp1116 these new silicon macs are wild 😳
Hi ! I did everything explained here but still pluging and unpluging all day long my Ensemble into my Macbook pro (Big Sur)... Any help ?
Bro...✌️
I followed all the steps, than reconnected 10 times maybe the duet, but still nothing... 12.6 monterey here
I never technically tested on Monterey from a fresh install but I upgraded and it continued working. I upgraded to Ventura however and I can’t get it to work. Are you on an M1 chip by chance? Everyone says it doesn’t work on M1
@@joshwetenkamp1116 I got old Apogee Duet Firewire to work with M1 MacBook Pro & Monterey. However, with the new Ventura it does not work any more. Apple discontinued the support for Firewire CoreAudio drivers. :(
Is this working on Monterey as well?
Yes
Thank you very much! Super helpful!
Thank a lot! I somehow missed a step, but I just went to security and privacy before restart, and got the option to allow apogee to install. There was no need to unplug. The Duet was recognised immediately. I replaced the duet with my apogee ensemble while my mac was asleep. It was also immediately recognised. I’m happy! (Big Sur)
With this model, Can I set my mic gain level, phantom power and monitor level manually with the settings saved when the Interface is powered off and on?
clean work
I watched entire video. But I’d still rather do this with jigs and power tools, even though I’ve never made a dovetail joint.
😄 to each his own. Anyway I’m only doing them for fun. If it was a business I would probably be thinking about power tools too.
Anyone else had their interface crap out for good under Montery 12.3.1?
I can confirm mine is still running strong connected to a Mac on 12.4
Please do you have the name of the cable adapters , the links don’t work
Oops...I had...not the right links. I've updated them now. The names are above the links, but here they are again: Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter, Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter, and FireWire 800 to 400 cable.
@@joshwetenkamp1116 that you I got the cables but the problem now is that the apegee master don't recognize the interface
I m wondering if this will work with monterey
I’m pretty sure it will but I upgraded to Monterey after it was installed and it just continued working
Is that a Katz-Moses dovetail jig?
Yep!
Nice joint! When you're removing wood from the front piece (creating the negative space for the tails to sit), it's easier to remove the bulk of wood by using your chisel parallel to the grain of the wood (the tip of the chisel goes between fibers and the wood is weaker in this dimension) after using the chisel to cut through the fibers along the knife line. The way you did it required you to cut across the wood fibers numerous times which takes more physical effort and also dulls your chisel faster.
Good advice Andrew. I’ll consider doing that next time. Thanks for watching.
Thank you ! Love the silent type videos , like Mr. Chickadee. Cheers
Thank you 😊 sometimes I just want the visuals too
Never heard of Mr. Chickadee though 😄
Very beautiful piece, attention to detail.
Thanks, there are lots of things I’d do differently next time but I think it turned out alright too.
A new channel for me too! A pleasure to watch . Bravo !
Thanks 🙏 😊
Beautiful work Josh 👍🏻🛠⚙️⭐️ I enjoyed this 13 mins , thanks for sharing
Thank you for watching! 🙏 ❤️
nice. like drill idea
Learned it from Matt Elsea on UA-cam. I think he said it was barbaric but effective 😆
Very well done
I'd like to see a secret mitre dovetail joint done. I used these in my school coursework years ago.
What on earth is that?! Dovetails that are concealed on the inside of a miter joint?
@@joshwetenkamp1116 Yes. Also known as full blind dovetail joint.
@@daverave6676 all your hard work is hidden though! Would be cool to see done though

Nice job. Love your patience.
Thanks! I had to do it 3 more times for the two drawers I was making 😅
Beautifully done Josh!
Thank you so much 🙏
More trash on internet to make people more ignorant. Amateurs without knowledge or experience giving lessons is the worst of this world
Misleading the internet, one view at a time.
But amateur or not, it fitted together well didn't it?
Confession through projection? I wouldn't cut DT's by hand unless I was making something worth the effort, but why hate on a guy for showing how to make half-blinds?
It wasn’t a “lesson”. Not one word was spoken the whole time, he just did the work and it fit together perfectly. How is he an amateur and how does this make people ignorant? You should pull that stick out of your rectum.
Nice work Josh. The Latin root of the word "amateur" is amor, someone who pursues a pastime out of their love of it. I'm curious Estudio Hayabusa, do you troll professionally or practice because you're passionate about it?
Greetings I have just found your channel and after watching you make those dovetails I had to subscribe, that was an excellent demo how to 👏👏👏👏
Thanks Peter! I appreciate it
I love your sled. Very nice design. New to woodworking. That is a good set up for small projects.
