nice
I remember the 90s Gibson Goldtone amps (that were made by, if I remember correctly, Trace Elliot) and everyone disliked those as well, but now they like them. People will like these when enough years have passed, just like they now like Norlin era Gibson guitars and CBS Fender Amps. I get what you’re saying - I have 60s tube amps - I’m just saying, people don’t care, given enough time. Reverb’s recent list of this year’s top 20 selling amps had zero tube amps on the list. They were all modellers/profilers.
I don't understand how you are getting away with out biasing. One funny thing is who made what and slapped their logo on tubes. Your style is hardly waking up the power tubes. I have never seen, coke bottle 6V6s, cool. I like them for rectifiers.
@@christophergallagher531 that particular amp I was using is cathode based bias and does not need to be rebased when swapping power tubes. Should have said that in the video. Thanks for watching !
@pureguitargear3935 Thanks, that is a curious amp. I just put a JJ 6V6 S, in a single ended cathode biased amp. (Supro Delta King 10) and it sounds cold. The 'S' is about the size of a 5881. The plate is huge. There is head room but it seems dark. There are long plate Telefunken 7025s that I love. They bump up the gain, but what I like is the balance and open feel. A teck ripped me off, swapping in a short plate. I knew straight off. I keep a Mulard 7025 in my '66 Fender E XII case, because the guitar likes them. Have Fun!
Wrong. ODR1 is.
Thank you for making this video. Comparatively, the Greenback sounds darker and more compressed. Alnico Blue would be my pick.
👍🏿🤘
So simple and straightforward it makes it so easy to compare the two... thank you as this helps a lot in me deciding between the two on a new VOX AC.
I played one today and dug it a lot. Certainly wouldn’t pay 1800 plus tax for the 1x12. Used is a possibility. I have no issue with PCB construction, if it’s a good quality board it can take the heat of the tubes. But it all depends on the quality of what’s used, not the construction method. PCB has been used in the majority of amps since the early 70’s. The gain sweep on the Gibson was great, got a fuzz tone when maxed, just roll back a little to get a snappy attack back. Reverb was great and the tremolo was tasty. The three power options worked great for knocking down the power and the Alnico Jensen sounded pretty good. Have played a lot of supposedly better made amps that don’t do everything as well as the Falcon did. Not many boutique or vintage amps that get the Reverb and the Tremolo right. What matters is the tone. Doesn’t matter if the amp is a hand wired, chassis socket Queen if it doesn’t sound better than the PCB, sockets and all amp. It just doesn’t.
tekefunken smooth plate best for me
Eternal debate...
I definitely dig the RCA output tubes here and also in my own amp. As far as input tubes, I lean towards RCA 12ax7 long black plates. Nice demo!
clear speech,,, Abo done !! nice* vid
This guys an idiot
Considering there are not too many techs qualified to do a proper fret level and crown, id trust a good Plek operator before id let someone touch my guitars' frets. Ive seen frets leveled almost all the way down to the fretboard....almost flat, no crown. Unbelievable.
id you bias for each type of 6V6?
Psionic Audio says Vox AC15’s are best under 1000 amps. Can get them used regularly for around 600 to 700
I have had 4 guitars plek’d. Each time it drastically improves playability. I prefer low action and that way there is no minor fret hump to hinder as going as low as I would like. I use the Guitar Guy’s in Ohio. They do great work.
How low is your high E string at the 12th fret?
Revist Peavey. Old Valveking = monster that can do anything. The new Invective looks like a beast. The Classics are just that, and the new ones are cheaper than what you're quoting.
For the ridiculous money these companies are charging for brand name guitars, they should play perfectly out of the box. You’re paying 3-5k and still the guitar has to be pleked in order to play perfectly. Ridiculous.
Exactly.
On speakers, you got to play them for a significant amount of time to get to their “real” sound. Banging on them with a lot of volume helps break them in if your hearing can take it
From experience I can say I opted for the Plek when I bought my Musicman Sabre from Sweetwater a few months ago. It was (and still is incredible). I later bought a second Sabre afterward with just the standard Ernie Ball setup they ship it with. It is really great, but I can tell a night and day difference in so many aspects from the one that was Plek'd vs the standard Ernie Ball setup. Both are wonderful, but the Plek'd one is still smooth and dreamlike compared to the standard setup. From here on, if I'm spending a decent amount on a guitar, I'm going for the Plek. Considering I paid $3500 for the first Sabre, the $300 was a great investment on an instrument that I can't seem to put down. Plek gets a strong yes from me. If I were buying a $500 - $750 guitar, that might be a different answer. Of course, after spending the amount I did and getting what I got, I don't know if I could ever not buy one of this quality again. You get what you pay for, and I'm seeing this every day and every time I pick this guitar up.
Excellent point about the complexities of the process and software, and having a trained and experienced luthier do the work. You should get what you pay for and I would want the full monty including a mirror finish on the frets, especially the ends. Check the reviews before you invest.
first - your 'tube rig' for the bar has nothing in common to the Edge's former 'tube rig'...second - if you can't make today's modelers/profilers sound good - it ain't the gear...
@@stevecastiglione8901 The Edge’s last rig run down before he stop using tube amps. He was using a vintage Vox AC 30 and his new signature model ‘57 deluxe. Not really an “unobtainable” rig. So I’m not really sure about your comment about not having anything in common with his rig. Let’s be real the crowd won’t know the difference or care if you are using a tube amp or a modelers. I think the player cares. I’d love to know your rig.
@@pureguitargear3935 i've got both and am equally happy playing both, but can't beat the convenience and consistency of digital...
sounds like everything is sharp , is the intonation on that guitar okay?
Nope, not for me. Ive been playing guitar for 60 years and do just fine without it.
How old are u
Just ordered a cherry Ibanez S470DXQM all original 100%. I had one many years ago and pawned it for dope, always regretted that after I got it together. Thinking about the plek but I don't know that it's worth it on a guitar in that price range. It would be more than half the price of the guitar. So just based on that probably not worth it. I do live in the bay area and there are 3 shops that do it here. But still with transport time and the fee it would be significant. I guess I will see how it plays first.
I own both tube amps and modeling amps, as well as the most traditional speaker cabinets with Celestion Vintage 30s inside. However, I must say that this whole debate is completely irrelevant because modeling and solid-state technology are the future. Modeling or solid-state amps, even the inventor of Dumble himself (a bit before his death), when asked if transistor amps would ever be as good as tube amps, responded that the question wasn't if it would happen but when. He emphasized that one day someone would make a transistor amp that sounds exactly like a tube amp, and given the way the market is evolving, I believe we are not far from that point. Even without considering that, basic modeling today is already excellent. Take anyone and blindfold them, and no one can tell the difference. Unfortunately, musicians often rely too much on their eyes instead of their ears. ( Most by the way jackoff way to much on gear all the time ( wether it’s new or vintage it’s the same ) instead of really playing guitar but that another debate) In any case, for guitar, the trend is to build things that are always lighter, better, more practical, simpler, and more intuitive. Even the country of origin hardly matters anymore because you can find quality in Europe, Asia, and even China, which wasn't known for quality products, is now able to copy or even surpass some American brands. We must recognize that American quality has significantly degraded, while Japanese quality remains stable at a high level. So, things are changing for the better.
I think Tone King Iron Man ii Mini only works with tube amps up to a maximum of 30Wat, is that true? Because I was thinking of buying it for a Fender Supersonic but this one has 60W.
@@Tecniconta correct. Only 30 watts. However they do make a 100 watt version
Placebo?
@@jameswinter1178 I don’t think so.
When you buy new from Sweetwater ask for a discount on the PLEK service. They have ALWAYS given me a really good discount.
You should ALWAYS Plek a new guitar. IT IS THAT SIMPLE. DO NOT be a cheap. It’s makes a MASSIVE difference in playability and will make you happy with your purchase. I WILLNEVER understand why folks DO NOT PLEK.
You own a Pleck machine don't you
The answer is add a remote 1x12 cab.
Nice review. I have an R8 as well and I love mine. Its all the Les Paul I will ever need.
Yea man I agree. They are a cut above dude for real
+1 on the R8! I chose mine after playing 21 Les Paul’s in my favourite guitar store. It’s a bourbon burst top, very little flame…but just a beautiful tone…like a great Tele on steroids.
@@rselp yup beefy tele is the tone I look for as well
I don't know anyone that gets a Matchless cheap.
Define cheap. I got my matchless lighting 15 for 1400$ used.
question? does your cable is XLR to XLR connected to interface? or is it TRS? please reply thank you
It has an XLR output on the back of the unit yes.

Ah. It wasn't fair of me to attribute to you universal guitar knowledge or mastery. I am a new subscriber, and you seemed like common denominator for all rookies and pros. Looking forward to your next step vlog.
The host of the vlog certainly presented himself as a knowledgeable yet approachable authority on plek machines. An experienced luthier will still be necessary to implement a portion of the results from the machine. I am probably wrong, but it is my understanding that a Plek rep trains the buyer how to operate the machine and implement its findings? The closest plek to my home in the Pittsburgh suburbs is 50 miles away. I have no idea if the shop is competent. The shop you visited knew what it was doing, and you felt the results reflected that. $300 is not cheap, but I can eventually absorb the loss if the plek operator screws up my guitar. Is it worth the gamble? Thanks for a great educational video.
That is a great question. The only reason I felt comfortable with this shop is because they had the plek machine for over ten years. I don’t know of a way to actually verify if they are competent sorry. Cheers
Hi, nice video , i want an American tone amp with the 6v6 or 6l6 tubes , and don't want a fender would you recommend this amp ? also does it take pedals well ? thanks
How much money do you want to spend ?
@@pureguitargear3935 not sure under 2,000 Low watt up to 20 watts
@@johnnyguitar-uu3zr right now on reverb they have brand new Greer Cam 18 heads for 2400$. I’ve owned dozens of 6v6 amps honestly. And I have two of those a combo and a head and cab. And it is the best 6v6 amp I have ever played. And he just built a new small batch. There is three left. They are extremely hard to find. If I was you I would snatch one up asap
@@johnnyguitar-uu3zr and I forgot the cam 18 is also switchable between 6v6 and 6l6 tubes with out re-biasing
I tell you. I have trashed so many tube amps I don't like to even think about it. Honestly I have learned to get the tone I need without tubes. Is it a compromise because of durability? That might be part of it. At the end of the day if I like the sound, the folks in the crowd will too. No way I will ever buy another PC tube amp. I wouldn't give 200 bucks for the new Gibson amp.
These are great videos, thank you so much and 'converted' me to the Yamaha THR10 and twin it with the Fender HH Telecaster Tidepool. Would you say that the Yamaha add you recommend would work with an ambient pedal sound? I am thinking of something like the Cloudburst. Your thoughts on it will be much appreciated, thanks again! Jem
Yea man I think so. It does it all. It takes all my modulation pedals great. Delay. Reverb. And the onboard effects are great too

The GE's are a bit brighter but the RCA's just get it. The Telefunken 12AX7's sound better than the JJ's - My personal preference is Amperex (Mullard) 12AX7's. NOS USA Tungsol's are excellent too!
I’m a fan of the late 60s/early 70s globe logo made in Holland ax 12ax7’s. They got a certain mid range to them. That’s kind of Marshall-esque.
Gotta get the JAN tubes 🙂
