Net metering is under attack by the private utility companies. This has already happened in California and resulted in a 70% decrease in solar installations in the state. In California the cost of a new solar system must include a battery bank and accept the fire hazard these create.

Great what's the price? Im guessing I could simply increase the number of ground or roof mounted panels to overcome the difference in efficiency for less than the cost of one of these systems? Im also guessing the excavation, concrete foundation and crane erection cost are prohibitive for most.

I personally would agree with you and don't see them replacing some setups, however the ability to put these in places where there's no clear land, because access is needed or walkways exist, plus the height puts them above many obstructions that would limit sunlight mornings-afternoons or winter time, these times are when solar production matters the most, and not just because of time of use metering. Additionally, putting panels on roofs isn't free, and requires rapid shutdown devices to be installed, which I don't think is a requirement for these systems.

Thank you for the presentation. I am not sure if I can put up panels. However, I did have a thought. How about installing just the batteries? If the power company gave me an off peak price break, I could save money. The batteries would also provide power in times of peak demand, brown outs, or loss of service. Better yet, I'll just plug in my EV.

“The supreme court on Monday asked the Biden administration to weigh in on big oil’s request to thwart litigation that could put them on the hook for billions of dollars,” the Guardian reports. The paper continues: “Honolulu is one of dozens of cities and states to sue oil majors for allegedly hiding the dangers of their products from the public. In October, Hawaii’s supreme court ruled that the suit can go to trial. But the defendants petitioned the US supreme court in February to review that decision, arguing the cases should be thrown out because emissions are a federal issue that cannot be tried in state courts. The high court receives thousands of petitions each year, giving each one only a small chance of being reviewed. But in recent weeks, rightwing fossil fuel allies have pushed the justices to take up oil companies’ request, publishing a slew of op-eds and social media advertisements. Some of the groups behind the pressure campaign - which experts say is unprecedented - are connected to far-right supreme court architect Leonard Leo, who co-chairs the ultraconservative legal advocacy group the Federalist Society.” According to Reuters, Honolulu filed the suit in 2020 against oil companies including Exxon Mobil, BP, ConocoPhillips, Shell and Sunoco. The Los Angeles Times adds: “Monday’s brief order asks solicitor general Elizabeth Prelogar to file a brief ‘expressing the views of the United States’ in the two pending appeals, Sunoco vs Honolulu and Shell vs Honolulu.” The Hill also covers the news. Elsewhere, the Financial Times “climate capital” newsletter continues reporting that “California will attempt to use consumer protection laws to seize some of the world’s biggest oil companies’ profits”, as part of a lawsuit that it launched against ExxonMobil, Chevron, Shell, BP and ConocoPhillips last September, accusing them of spreading misinformation and deceiving the public about climate change.

Thanks for the great presentation. The notion that a battery system might last 20 years seems very generous to me, especially if taking advantage of net metering, but I'm not an expert on that. Maybe you folks could comment on that in some future presentation?

Efficiency of PV panels around 19- 20 percent, solar collectors coud be 80 percent efficient. Place an air to water heat pump in your unconditioned attic and solar collectors on south wall and let your heat pump run only during a day storing all heat in a buffer tank, due to higher ambient temperature during a day COP of that heat pump will be higher and on sunny day just much higher because of those solar collectors. As well I ve heard that some company in Europe in order to increase efficiency of water to water heat pumps use solar collectors to preheat water before it gets into heat pump

How about the electric company installing for free solor panels on anyones home that requests it. All they have to do is put systems that overproduce and then they get energy from every home. No more shortages.

Thanks for the great webinar! Kailash Ecovillage has two community electric vehicles: a 2014 Leaf and a 2017 Bolt with 24 and 60 kwh batteries. According to the webinar, this is much higher capacity than a typical home battery system of 10-15 kwh. We'd like to use these vehicles to power our chest freezer, laptops, and smart phones if the electric grid goes down. Our chest freezer has a 1/4 horsepower motor: 184 watts. It seems the usual power available on a vehicle is via the cigarette lighter. For example, one can plug in a DC to AC inverter into the cigarette lighter to get household current, although its wattage is limited to just a few hundred watts. Q: would it be possible to plug in an inverter into the cigarette lighter to get the less than 200 watts of power we would need to power the freezer? It appears technically this might be possible, but I have not tried it. I am wondering why EVs don't come with a moderate wattage electric outlet built in to power small appliances. Seems like that could be a great selling point for them. Being able to plug in your freezer to your EV would be a wonderful amenity for an EV!

Please help me understand why the State of Oregon confiscates the solar energy output of overproducers. If an individual installs a solar system that produces more power than they use in one year the State confiscates that overproduction without any compensation or credit to the individual. This seems anti-solar, anti-environmental and anti-property rights to me. Compensating individual solar producers for their excess solar power would be good for the environment. But our Salem legislators seem to have other priorities when it comes to alternative energy and our environment. I suspect they do this because the power companies have better lobbyists in Salem and both the power companies and our legislators see individual Solar Energy production as a threat to their profits and control. Do you have a better explanation?

I agree, the owner should be able to choose to donate the solar or keep it.
