Hi Skip, thanks for taking time to post your videos, I have been a subscriber for a while now. I am on my second gen Firebird restoration, my first is a 78 Formula that my mom purchased when she was going through her mid life crisis when I was 13, good for me because I got to drive it to high school. It is restored to completely stock down to the 2 barrel carburetor and the Uniroyal steel belted radials. My second is a 81 Trans am that I purchased as a shell that a guy was scrapping, so I decided to do a 70-73 TA pro touring LS six speed swap. The car has a ton of metal work, flush fit small back window 81 rear taillights, extended the lower rear quarters 2 1/2 inches with a metal wrap around bumper and a rear diffuser along with a metal spoiler. I was thinking about installing gen 5 Camaro door lathes and then I remembered the Bear Claw latches that you installed on your truck. My question to you is, do you think the Bear Claws would work on the second gen doosr? Thanks, Mike
@@pitcuz cool! Send me a pic of the car skip99202@yahoo.com. Essisientually ? That is what 2nd gen latches are i think so i wouldnt change them, if you are doing something really custom, sure, you can make anything work, but ive learned sometimes all the detail isnt worth it….ive spent days doing things that really just werent worth the time, but time is what i had, built not bought! Lol
Hey Skip, Do you remember where you bought your Battery cables from? I'm trying to get the closest ones possible to correct originals for my 77 T/A with a Pontiac 400 engine. I know you usually do all of your homework. I'm looking forward to your next video. Tracy Lee down in Georgia.
@@wlc1980 these were originals, still in good shape….but saw some new at firebird central i think, check with don bassman at east coast trans ams
@ Wow ok, mine were cut off and changed into top posts. I’ll check those vendors. Thanks!
Good progress, keep it up! 😎
I wrapped with bungee cords and left them in the sun for a few days, worked great for me
What sun? Its winter in ohio….lol
@@skipprice6843 I'm from Ohio 😀, during the Browns vs Steelers in the snow globe game last week I called my dad and thanked him for moving to California after I was born
I had the same issue, drivers side was perfect, passenger side didn't fit for crap, and they were the originals that I took off!
Must’ve been built on a Monday or a Friday,,,,😂😂😂
Great points, taking mine off this weekend,,,
Hi Skip, yes that throttle looks like it’s open pretty far. That usually leads to dieseling after you shut off the car when it’s hot and I’m sure you know that, but maybe other viewers don’t. Let us know how the idle works out later. Sometimes I’ve had luck with adjusting the timing a little bit also to get my idle where I like it. That Quadrajet restoration looks beautiful. Great work!
You're not alone...
Owned 2 birds, and you have shown us a lot. Thanks
That's GM
The engine and engine bay looks so good
That's one bad machine.
Experienced, "aftermarket parts fit/fail" myself with an old Mustang. there has to be some way of getting advise from the Firebird community. I'm certain you're not the only one with this and other issues from replacing original parts. Good luck, looks like quality work so far.
Good vid, what was that stuff? Pick clicks? And by the way I'm having the same trouble you did with my right rear caliper they can't seem to order the correct one. Such fun!
@@mrp2561 picklex 20……..
Do you have any tips or perhaps what tool you should use to install and remove the trunk torsion bars? I’d love to see how you accomplish this, your videos are very helpful!
Be happy it leaked now and not after you got the wheel well and fender on!
Nice work, looks great!
Good video Skip. The booster....is it new? That car is gonna look super!
Its a rebuilt original, but don bassman at east coast trans ams is producing some new..
I felt exactly the same when I did my brakes. Ended just saying the same. Well they work... Best move on.
How did the Retro radio sound and work??
Great, more than ill ever need!
We used an inductive soldering iron held near the HEI module to induce a 60 hz magnetic signal into to the pickup coil. With a spark test, it would fire 30 times a second or half to the magnetic field as is reversed. I would try a coil of wire if you have a soldering gun. It won’t work with a pencil type soldering gun. Or, run a jumper off a running GM with HEI, from the tach lead to the tachometer. You just need power, ground and input which was optional on most. It could be a 6 cylinder as it still reads. Unfortunately I don’t live nearby or I could loan my Kent-Moore frequency generator. It has multiple out puts to check VSS input, ABS as seen on scan tool and many other on-off circuits directed by the service manual. Note; Some digital tachs require a “Pull-up” resistor to B+ and increase signal strength. Just a thought.
Thanks, ive heard of using an old 12 charger as it still has 60 hz onthe dc ……i should have bought a freq gen 30 years ago, lol inever thought id use one again…til next time….thanks
@@skipprice6843 I had to laugh a little when I read the little line of your post in my notification list. I pictured a full sized battery charger weighing 60 lbs. held up near a distributor. LOL! I am sure a couple of jumper wires connecting your unknown tach onto a running HEI vehicle. Yes, many are coil over or coil near plug, but a tach signal terminal is a simple 1/4 male spade that a female 1/4” terminal will plug into. This would be easiest to do as a factory tach from a vehicle 8 cylinder engine will simply need ground, B+ and input signal. So barrow a signal from uncle Joe. Not the one in the White House! Just a person you know because it can’t hurt or damage anything. If you remember when they had Sear’s, but Radio Shack sold a spool of meter wire. Red & Black but a package of alligator clips (unless over seas, call crocodile clip) but soft silicone jacket over low oxygen copper wire made great jumper wires. I still have a 4 ft, 8 ft, 12 ft with soldered ends and shrink tubing on ends. I have spool of 3M 5/16” shrink tubing on 50 ft roll on large cardboard sleeve. I said I enjoy electrical. As any wire will do, just buy or make some. If I am testing a fuel pump or tank sending unit voltage drop I need a long jumper to battery. Now I know exactly what voltage is, if I have a good ground (voltage drop) then I see a rusted metal filter, I change it. I drain it in solvent tank, but blow thru it and note plugged or not. Fused jumper (15amp) at relay center as GM had green terminal or pump direct line then place amp clamp over it! 7.5 amps normal. (Tip: head lamp is 4 amps, solder jumpers to plug into vehicle harness. Dim, power or ground problem. Bright, all is good) But using the primary scope or lab scope shows amperage waveform. If jagged, pump is worn at brushes or commutator plates on armature down to plastic) So if current is low, pump is worn. Current is high, restriction or plugged filter) easy and quick.
I believe it’s better to let the paint sit, shrink, cure out completely, as well. Looks good.
I worked on school buses at a shop and when they use a solid front axle, they use king pins. On the bottom they use these huge captured thrust bearings. If you have a buss or semi garage, see if you can get a couple of these bearings. They work great in place of the washers and pullers as well. This isn’t a tool that’s a guy uses all the time, but the king pin bearing works great. Or grease.
I did the same for my stop / tail light housing on 67 C10. Got the “COB” LED panel that fit side by side behind red lenses. Diode on both feed wires with added resistors to make tail lamps less bright. The “COB” is just component on board and on $5 for two 7” long. I am to cheap to spend $200 from Brothers for LED stop light inserts. I do enjoy wiring as one of 6 electrical class we taught for ACDelco. I worked for them for almost 7 years.
Nice “Coming Attractions” feature video.
On the window trim with the door inner belt molding (Fuzzies) what is that made from?
Not sure what you mean? The fuzzies are just stock pieces.the windlace is round foam covered in vinyl.
@@skipprice6843 No problem as you was showing the window trim held with a couple of screws and you mentioned the track and window fuzzys. My 67 C10 is just painted around the upper door and around the window frame. I just didn’t know how you made it. I know some plastics will take shape if you heat them a little like ABS. I just worked at dealers too long and other shops, but the parts department would ask if we needed the door belt molding. (The fuzzy part that touches the glass) inside and out. They are vulcanized to steel and clip into slots in the doors metal. Maybe you have a video on that. It was getting late and I was looking at door panel designs. DK, Omaha. ASE master since 78. Retired.
Beautiful property Skip!
Costco has a huge selection of battery's
Great advice on polishing the plastic. I am probably a few weeks away from this phase, but this was a great video for what to expect.
nice 51 p/u
I think your wrong about that "weird random" part you found not belonging. My 78 has that piece. It has a vacuum diaphragm that moves the panel. I am sure you need it. I can send a some pictures of what mine looked like before I removed it to get cleaned and repaired if needed.
Thanks, but the flap is only on ac cars, mine is heat only..
@@skipprice6843I realized that after I posted. My car has AC. I love the videos. You’re providing awesome insight to what I’m getting into.
I just pulled my fuel tank on a 1978 Trans Am and I took a few videos of the lines before I went any further. Do you want it to double check your lines? I think you got it right but what you described was my biggest fear, getting one of them backwards or having a part come in and it confuse you because of the orientation of the tubes. I'm loving your videos, keep up the good work.
Love the gauges. Getting ready to buy Dakota digital now. Which gauges are these? Rtx? Vhx ?hdx?
Hdx….kyspeedshop.com
Love seeing your progress... awesome.
Thanks!
Hey Skip I’m catching up on your videos. Bring that Trans Am down here to Georgia where the Bandit was from! lol I’m originally from Michigan, Georgia has a pretty good car culture. I have a Silverado kinda like yours in the video. I can’t believe just swapping brake pads is a hassle, you’re the second person I heard mention it. I’m not looking forward to it with mine. The I’m currently helping my uncle with a 69 Camaro, we butt heads because he’s a rigger and I’m more like you, more of a perfectionist. I have a video in my channel of us messing with it. Car restoration can be a headache!! Your car is looking great!
Love those 69’s…!
Nice, my exhaust guy tried to fight me on the two mufflers he wanted to put one big one behind the diff and I said no. Not on my W- 72!!
Which exhaust did you end up going with? or did you make all your own pipe?
I used walker tailpipe and over the rear end….i made my own drops and pipe to the mufflers..
don't the new speakers normally come with new wires?
Yes, they do, i probably put them somewhere safe so i wouldnt lose them, lol
Sure looks perty! Looking at retirement in a couple of years, too and not really keen on spending half my income on property tax and house insurance!!
Awesome, was wondering how it was going. Why not drive the Trans Am when it's done? I like your Blazer idea, cool.
I would swap those panels out at their cost. Minor cleanup is forgivable but come on, zero quality control. The problem with you fixing them is it promotes their lack of quality.
Hey Skip. Thank you for the all the videos and documenting your progress. I'm using your build as a resource for mine. Been using your tips on paint. I'm knee deep in stopping the rust and looks like I'll need an entire floor pan and trunk floor among other sheet metal. I'm restoring my lost and now found high school 79 Firebird Formula. ua-cam.com/video/lMmHq34dePQ/v-deo.html If you want to check it out.
Don't you miss stereo shops?
This old bird sure has come a long way. I can't wait to see her all back together again looking shiny and new!
Hey now, have you finished the engine harness wiring,? If you did I don't see it. Good stuff here Skip !
Not yet, its just hanging on the wall, but mine is really simple, no power anything , no ac, Anything you wanna see specific?
@@skipprice6843 I got the same setup as you do, no power anything no AC I got power steering of course and power brakes my wiring harness has been all hacked up I thought about getting a new one there's a couple of wires I don't know where they go and I have a service manual but I don't see it but maybe some wiring tutorial. Mainly the red ones around the alternator. Thanks 😊

Wow! That radio IS modular! Do they still make Jensen Triaxles? Those were my go-to in "79. 😂 That, and a bottle of Jovan Musk oil in the console! (Try Five Finger Death Punch's version of Blue on Black!)
Yep, all the way around, lol!
I have a good pic of my glove box with trunk release button before i took out the dash. If u have an email or phone # ill send it to you. I know the current trend is to put these larger wheels on the older cars but i dont think they look right and am gonna get my original 15in snowflakes redone.
Agree, im on the fence with the wheels
If it's to loud your too old! sorry, had to say it! The one song I've always used to judge a stereo is the Darkside from Eddie & the cruisers soundtrack, seemed to have a good mix of bass and treble to flesh out a speaker.
Agree, great song… too old?….insert mom joke here….lol
