Also the strategic command series has never been my cup of tea since it abstracts a lot of elements which leads to very ahistorical results personally I really like shadow empires which is a fabulous war game/ 4x hybrid.

Personally I prefer panzer general 2’s smaller scale and greater variety of campaigns especially in the open general source port but panzer marshal is also a great remake and can be gotten form the AppStore for free. though I am not a big fan of its ui as open general

The Panzer corps and order of battle series are games running in parallel development. Though I am not as familiar with order of battle’s design linage I am sure that panzer corps is a spiritual sequel to panzer general 1. Before making panzer corps the devs made a source port for panzer general 1 that adds 2 whole new campaigns for world war 1.

The sub windows are not opening it will probably work if you do screen capture as opposed to window capture

I enjoy the game too and find your commentary reflects my experience. I understand why some don't find it engaging and there are valid criticisms about game length (if your expectations are based on existing games in the series) and some rules bloat. That said, there are a few commentators out there who seem to get enraged at even the idea that others see this game as playable and fun!

Having played two intro sessions, I concur with your assessment. I do think there are a few areas where some streamlining could have been implemented, yet it is a brilliant crunch of a game. What are your thoughts on their sister, Virgin Queen?

I am fully aligned with your impressions. I actually got a chance a few weeks ago to go to the Canary Islands and Isabella’s seat of power at Segovia and my appreciation of the history of the game really went to the next level. I suspect that this game is for a certain type of wargamer (acceptable of detailed chrome for historical immersion), which is totally fine. I can see this being a much deeper and more replayable game than HIS with the right group.

I've played several times, on balance I enjoy it. Even for a player like me that is not intimidated by excess chrome, this one is a challenge. Not for everyone but I like the game.

I love Here I Stand and I enjoyed Tanto Monta even more. It's true that there could be some streamlining of some rules (Borgia and the Venetian-Ottoman war are a good example of this) and it's a game that you cannot play in one day as it's longer with those bigger hands and all the maintenance. But you have more options in combat, the cards that you draw feel better and having players controlling more than one power is great and even if part of the diplomacy is kind of enforced by events you have soooo many choices in how you conduct war against the other players. The shorter scenario may be easier for a first game, as you don't need to care about many rules like the diplomacy limits of the first two turns or the rules about various treaties as they are already on play. I believe that if all players learn carefully the rules and you take your time for the game (like maybe playing 1 turn each day) it can be a great experience...

I cannot resist asking you this question. I know you rate The Greatest Day very highly - it was one of your top ten favorite games. When do you think you will have time to play and review the second game in this series (Utah)?

I gave up after checking all the special rules every minute. It took more time that gameplay itself.

This game has some very different opinions! I have decided to take the plunge and a game over a week-end is being organised...... hopefully, we can get that set up and we have a lot of fun....... Thanks for the review and your play through!

Thanks for the series of videos, l learned a lot I have a concern about the headline phase. It seems the player with fewer cards stands to lose another card if they come in last, putting them further in a hole. Not sure if this is balanced by the VPs needed to win, but I would find that frustrating as a player. All that being said, i got the game in the sale too.

Fully agree with you about the comparison to HIS. The tightness with which the factions are engaged from the get-go makes a really compelling play experience.

How are you finding TM solo now you are at turn 5? All those counters all over the table can't help managing through the 4 hands!

WOTR is thematically brilliant. What I dislike is the FP real only focus is to charge asap to destroy the Ring using most companions as corruption fodder. (i.e. It seems 1 dimensional.) So: Do any of these expansions add any ATTRACTIVE nuance to FP strategy?

welcome to Vietnam a cracking game. TBH having the new version and comparing it to the original i actually prefer the colour palette and need for only two maps in the original. Counter density isnt very high and the extra footprint of a three mapper makes a big difference. Also not a huge fan of the map quality in the new version the paper feels very thin and light compared to the VG version and components on most VG game was very good. Nice update though.

I just purchased a copy of Monmouth and Brandywine/Germantown. I’m going to also purchase the player guide. I’m going to take a deep dive into this system and I’ll probably end up falling in love and collecting all the volumes of BAR. The complexity is actually what attracts me to the system. The formations and procedures. Thank you for this video comparison!

Hell of a game! Very weird rules but super fluid and engaging, really nails the style of fighting in my opinion and so many options for tactical/operational flexibility. I haven’t attempted the the full campaign yet but I intend to when I retire in 30 or so years. Enjoy!

Fantastic game. Two very distinct elements. Operations which are the on board military elements. The game is worth if just for this alone. The system really captures the operational feel of the war. It is so different to a regular war game with a defined front. The second element of the game is the Strategic game. Winning hearts and minds. Influencing the regional population to support either side. So much going on with this. The politics of SVN and the ARVN. The development of the HCM trail. The escalation of the US involvement. There is an inertia to spend your resources. Essentially you have to decide things a season ahead of when they occur. Both elements of the game are not suited to solitaire. The VC units while revealed in combat revert to being hidden so the US has a hard time tracking the strength of VC units. But in the Strategic game there is a lot of subtlety which is quite opaque to the opposing side and it may take time to realise what is the underlying strategy of the opponent. So it’s the ultimate ‘non solitaire’ game.

It is a great game. I needed to go through the first two scenarios several times to really get a full feel of the common engagements!

Really glad you’re doing this play through. Have been torn between this and Virgin Queen, the complexity does not put me off at all. Ever since seeing 1492 conquest of paradise many years ago has given me an interest in this period.

The 2nd Burgundian War was nowhere as successful as the turn one version. But then, how could it?

I made an error here when the Spanish invaded the Nasrid Kingdom. They're not at war so the Spanish can't do it. I corrected this later on.

Oh my, I used to play Close Combat a lot back when it released. I didn't think anyone still played it. Lovely game. It sort of reminds me of Steel Panthers but graphically better and in real time.
