Is this Argerich’s favorite phrase of music?
I’ve noticed every time she gets to this wonderful mediant entrance of the Rondo theme in Beethoven 2, she gets the happiest expression on her face (a rare occurrence for her during performance!). Given that she’s said Beethoven is her favorite composer, I honestly wonder if this is her favorite phrase of music to play!

Ravel - Gaspard de la Nuit (Martha Argerich, Saarbrücken 1972) (Score-Video)

1. Ondine (00:00) 2. Le gibet (06:30) 3. Scarbo (13:01) How do I even begin talking about this performance? For me, it is the pinnacle of pianism in recorded history. Gaspard has always been my favorite work in the piano repertoire. Seldom has the piano been utilized to a fuller potential of color than in this piece - and rarer has music been imbued with such darkness and fantasy. Ravel wrote i...

Rachmaninoff Sonata no. 2 (Finale) Has there ever been a pianist capable of producing such a sound? Maybe Richter or Sokolov, but none with quite as much profundity as this solitary genius.

It is a piece that, for me, she is untouchable in. The coda to the third movement is a work of genius, a wild round between piano and orchestra (featurin...

Martha Argerich - Queen of Repeated Notes
Yuja Wang is amazing.
My favourite is Zimerman’s, but i admit i’d never listened to Richter’s version and i’m impressed with that macabre aura his interpretation gives.
Timeless.
hoffmann
pogolerich was strange??? his version is the best among these...
Meh, not that hard.
When Zimmerman plays, the discussion ends there...
Jörg Demus 1976 is missing in that mix. He'd be taking the cake along with Khatia Buniatishvili and Claudio Arrau.
there's no best version at all For me, anyone who can play this is all gods😂
Vadim Chaimovich
There's a wide variation of interpretations of this represented - many of them more improvisational than scripted. Harold Schonberg maintains that Beethoven's performance style would be laughed off contemporary platforms because if its wide tempo and dynamic styles. Does this reflect the improvisational nature of 18th and early 19th century performance style, or undermine the growing move towards composers' intended fidelity to the score as propagated by 19th and 20th century (so-called) urtext editions - or simply allow for fluctuations between the two? Improvisational styles reflect the creative and spontaneous spirit and keep music alive.
yundi li is brilliant
I do not wish to see Lang Lang impersonating Yuja's bow.
Sounds like a fine old watch that was wound too tightly and all the intricate mechanisms and brilliant jewels exploded all over into the brilliant sunlight.
For me it is Richter by quite a lot. Just more interesting and he is one of only a few that does not feel like they are playing at the limit of their ability and just feeling rushed and losing coherency. Zimmerman also does this quite well but his is so dry compared to Richter. Schiff is probably the worst but he has to go after Richter.
Valentina Lisitsa is missing.
next to argerich, I think garrick ohlsson is my favorite here! with his playing I somehow can hear every note and it doesnt sound blurry at all somehow, very nice!
Moravec and Igoshina deserve to be on this list.
By far.... Hofmann. Not from this planet!
wonderful michelangeli
The drama in Alicia de Larrocha's playing is unparalleled. Faster is not always the best, but Arrau wins that race if that's your bag.
i don’t get why everybodys hating on lilyas version i mean i kinda like the fact that even if it’s a little slower u really get all the various thirds perfectly like is just beautiful in my opinion and satysfing
RICHTER despite some wrong notes to me seems to really get to the heart of it!
Where the heck is Sokolov??? For me one of the best performances
I can’t believe how many pianists on this list royally fuck up this section. It’s got a marking at the start saying DOPPIO MOVIMENTO. It should be twice as fast as the first section. Only two who get this right are jan and sokolov. Alice Sarah Ott is likely the worst. So slow and robotic. Sounds like she’s practising it for the first time. Awful interpretation.
what chances from the normal version to the ossia one in this passage??
Krystian Zimerman, Maurizio Pollini and Yuja Wang!
Supposedly Clara Schumann could not master this piece, she called them "The Witches Variations." So Brahms himself had to stand in for her at a concert. So the cuts above make me think those two pianists also could not master the entire variation. A better solution would simply be to not program the Paganini Variations at all, and especially don't record for posterity what you could not master.
e
The final ossiascale is more difficould but sounds worse! I like the slower- more melodic versions. LangLang performs it also for the eyes!😂💦💦 Nice inspiration to practise it also…
Dino Ciani is by far my favourite: ua-cam.com/video/TNwFUuY9Z00/v-deo.html
Claudio Arrau and Khatia for the win.
Brigitte Engerer best by far 👍
What is the name of this piece that yulia is playing
Jan lisiecki got so close, but honestly none of them understood this part at all, at all. Poor chopin.
They are all close.. Sokolov is my idol so I'm biased..
why the lang lang one sound so asian?? haha
Rubinstein and it's not even close
She played in my hometown Prokovuev concerto, after a while with much noise a hammer broke.
1. zimerman 2. michelangeli ... and the rest
Where was Volodos and why was he not included?!!!
@@evantorch6122 please link a live performance of his to this piece?
What's the piece she's playing?
This is like when Mozart imitated Salieri in the Forman film.
My favorite here is Josef Hofmann; I had never heard him play with such fury combined with the control needed to convey creative genius. Runner up is the "old Horowitz" performance, which is hair-raising, daring, and beautifully articulated. To my taste, Cortot also has a marvelous conception of the coda. His uncompromising rhythmic integrity suits the fury of this passage. but his performance here does not show him in top form. Pletnev is mind-blowing, but too fast to give the best effect with strong accents where they matter. I'll bet Godowsky was astounding playing this piece; keep in mind that his playing here is represented by a Duo-Art piano roll.
So, so many talented virtuosos with wonderful interpretations… It was truly a hard choice for me, but I’m gonna have to go with 20. Seong-Jin Cho (13:29). The way he adds variety of feelings to it, while maintaining strong speed, flow, intensity, and bringing out the expression of melodies of all the parts… It’s just all too good. For me, it was between him and 14. Yundi Li (9:12), whose interpretation is also an absolute gem in its own right. In fact, many of these in the video are gems in their own right. Absolutely well done to everyone, I can only dream to play this masterfully as well as expressively. ❤ Chopin is my favorite composer, I think he would be proud. 🥹
Rachmaninoff destroys all competition.
Sokolov for me one of the best with Ivo and Alice performances here.
Genius title! I laughed so hard when I first read it! Bravo!
