    Great video Joel. The work-life balance in audio post production is probably one of the greatest challenges of our careers. I've definitely gone through a lot of similar scenarios and I agree it's all about keeping a solid perspective on what's most important. This is why I love this channel; you pull back the curtain on what truly can go on behind the scenes in this business on a more human level. You're great at highlighting things that many of us are all already thinking about, but may not generally talk about. There's power in knowing you're not the only one. Great stuff!

    Another question, sorry haha! Is LFE the only bass source, or do the other speaker channels in a theater hold low frequencies, or is there a separate sub that's not LFE? I use fairlight and it's always tempting for me to push up a little on the boom parameter (which I think is tied to LFE) Hope that makes sense!

  • @brown2840
    @brown2840 Місяць тому

    I am about to mix a very basic 5.1 of my short film for a theatrical private screening. I don't think the theater even knows technically how to help me, but my concern is channel order and it not properly mapping for them. Thankfully I will get to do a tech test with them before the screening. I have read it's mostly typical to mix in standard (not film) 5.1 and that being L,R,C,LFE,LS,RS order. I see that your channel order in this video is in 5.1 Film, is that correct?

I’ve been reflecting on it, and I found myself really relating to what Austin said - the key is to just keep going, keep collaborating, and stay persistent. Things can turn around when you least expect it! Thank you so much for interviewing Austin and Jeff, Joel! Their insights really help shaping the mindset of someone working in the sound industry. From the attitude and mindset to the skills needed, everything they shared kinda helps me prepare for what's ahead. And yeah really excited to watch Interior Chinatown! 😁

    I’ve only watched half of the episode so far, and I can tell it's been really enriching. When Jeff talked about keeping your mouth shut when you get the chance to be in the same room with the mixers, I think that was actually a very straightforward piece of advice. If you don’t listen and observe, you might learn things the hard way. Jeff was right-sometimes it’s better to keep quiet, because there’s a lot of nonverbal communication happening among the mixers that you could miss if you're focused on bringing your own opinion to the stage! Anyway, I’m going to grab my coffee and get back to the episode!

I've been following your posts for a few months now, and I have to say, you always hit upon something profound that is either top of mind, or floating in my subconscious. I literally was having a conversation today with a younger sound designer colleague of mine, and we discussed this very topic of how to carry yourself in this business, in a way that is memorable and valuable without losing your natural identity. It's all about putting yourself out there, taking risks, and making sure you stay out of your "comfort zone". You may not always land on the runway you planned, but at least you're flying. Keep em coming Joel!

    Hey friend. I have an issue where I can’t find REMOTE work. I reached out to many post studios. Several have shown interest in me because of my experience, but they said I would have to work on-site. That means I would need to relocate, which is not an option for me at the moment. My wife is pursuing her career as a doctor and is doing her residency for the next 5 years. I’m still knocking on doors. I have a long spreadsheet to keep track of all the companies I’m contacting and taking notes of any interactions. There are still many more to contact, it’s like an endless list. Any tips? Thanks.

    This is great information. I’m sure many folks are seeing this for the first time and it’s an eye opener. Otherwise they are wildly guessing what the typical wage is. This also explains why we hear the specific job titles when someone is sharing their career path starting as Junior, or Assistant, before getting to the top.

    Hey brother. I feel like you may be not telling the whole story. Happy for you that you make so much but the truth is that editors make minimum scale as a rule. I'm TIER 1 at Skywalker and work on the biggest, most successful movies but I have NEVER worked above scale. It is not an option and is not at all negotiable. Any aspiring editors out there need to understand this because it would be a mistake to work so hard to follow this line of work under the illusion that you can make a comfortable living doing it. That's not in the cards for editors. The only way to make a living doing this work is to fill up nights and weekends with side work and that means, you work 18/7 for your entire life. That's how I've made it work and you know what? After 30 years of it, I'm tired.

    • @masteringpostproductionsound
      @masteringpostproductionsound Місяць тому

      Hey J! I really appreciate you sharing your perspective, especially from someone who’s been putting in the work at a place as iconic as Skywalker. You’re right, not everyone’s experience in this industry looks the same. In places like Skywalker, the rates and structure are often pretty set, and I totally get that negotiation might not even feel like it’s on the table. I've also had experiences where negotiation has been possible, and I personally know of editors who have been able to bump their rates up over time, but I know that's not always the case for everyone. And for anyone reading this, yes, there are definitely facilities and budgets where scale is standard, and breaking past that can be challenging. Sometimes it’s about weighing the prestige of working on these big projects at a top facility versus potentially exploring other opportunities where there might be more flexibility. I’m with you on how demanding this career can be, especially if you are juggling main gigs with side hustle work. This industry isn’t easy, and it’s certainly not a “clock out at 5” kind of job for us all. It takes a lot of hard work and hustle, long hours, and dedication. My hope with sharing these videos is to help folks understand there are different ways to approach a career in post-sound. For those just starting out, I’d say, keep building your skills, stay curious, and never stop looking for ways to create more value to this marketplace. This bizz is NOT for everyone, but I truly believe that persistence, hard work, and great relationships can open doors over time. Thanks again for taking the time to check out the video and for sharing. I believe it’s important for people to see different perspectives, ask questions, and take away whatever nuggets they can.

      @@masteringpostproductionsound For the record, it's not just Skywalker who caps editor pay. It is every single supervisor I've ever worked with, and that's a lot of supervisors. Also, one of the reasons why you don't talk about pay on stage is because the disparity between editor and mixer pay is so obscene that it always makes us editors feel worthless.

And there is no sound editor, mixer , foley, re recorder.....it's all one person here ( expect for a handfull of huge productions ) and we have to be able to do video editing as well, true swiss army knives for close to minimum wage :/ .

    👏🏻 Thank you! This is really great for folks starting out. The downside is that based on talking to folks in the biz last week, that overall biz is down for trad post atm. Do these rates also work for games biz?

    • @masteringpostproductionsound
      @masteringpostproductionsound Місяць тому

      Yes, overall, the bizz has been impacted from last years strikes and the contraction of the overall streaming bizz, however, I still fully believe that there are opportunities for those who deeply believe they were destined for this industry and are willing to put in the hard work to build credibility. As far as the rates go, these are what productions negotiated with the union, I am not sure they apply to games.

    Wow. I really appreciate you sharing this info. I'm a mix assistant in Toronto and since there isn't a union, people are really lip shut about their salaries so it's impossible to know what to ask for and we're always taken advantage of because of it. Pretty disheartening to learn that even though I'm 10 years in,, working in one of the best studios in the country, I'm not making even half of what the entry level is over there =") Really appreciate these videos friend!

  • @bernice_chu
    @bernice_chu 2 місяці тому

    Thanks for sharing! What's the definition for "entry" vs. the experienced one? Do you know why NY is separated to a different type of contract? Is there a place where I can read up on the definitions for the other types of contracts? It's great that you usually work hourly! In Toronto, for union sound editors, there's a weekly rate or a daily rate. Majority of people are paid a weekly rate (for 60hrs) vs. being paid daily because that's more expensive. And I think it's common to work at scale. Re-recording mixers are not unionized here and they often make less $ than sound editors 😅. Would love to see a video about negotiating above scale or just the negotiation process in general/or the process of how you get the gig!

      @@fhbaynes not in post-sound. I’ve been asked for a resume maybe twice and that was when I got an entry level job in the industry. This is very much still a word of mouth industry. My resume is my IMDb credits. Now, if I were to leave this industry and try and get a job in a completely industry, you are correct. They still want a resume. Very happy I don’t have to worry about that. My perspective is unique in an industry that very much still puts emphasis on work ethic, readability and relationships.
