Specialty Outdoors: Badass Sewing for Dirt Bags
Приєднався 15 лют 2015
I am a retired technical sewing specialist - that is, retired from 25 years of repairing and modifying technical clothing and gear. Zippers, Gore-Tex, ski wear, soft shells, down, fleece; hiking, biking, skiing... I've worked on it all. This channel goes with my blog, "Badass Sewing for Dirt Bags" which I keep going even though I am no longer working. I sew for fun now! Here is where I pass on the knowledge that has been shared with me over the years.

Forget seam rippers! How to use a razor or to scalpel cut stitching apart.
Переглядів 1,4 тис.2 роки тому
I haven't owned a seam ripper in over 20 years. Here is a demonstration of how to use a scalpel and single edge razor to cut apart seams and stitching.

Save lots of time by cutting off an old zipper instead of taking a coat all the way apart.
No-tape* tracing PDF Patterns onto Pellon (*almost)
Переглядів 2,6 тис.2 роки тому
This video shows an alternate method to handle PDF print out and multiple patterns. I don't tape it together into a big sheet or print/tape/cut a pattern for each size. I trace small sections at a time onto Pellon which is fast, easy to do, saves time, and stores really nicely.

note: since I made this video, I did the math on purchasing magnets. it is cheaper to get them through Amazon but you may not always find the size you want.

I was so bummed when I clicked on your website's link and saw the announcement that you're closed! Wishing you all the best and hope that you're enjoying retirement! :) If you have any recommendations of folks who make custom clothing, I'd really appreciate them! 😊
Brilliant. I think I will do this on my usual Doctor exam paper. I have used the grided paper before and one bolt that I purchased was not a perfect one inch square, and if for any reason that is something you are relying on, can cause a problem. I really love this idea as I loathe Scotch taping PDFs.
This is so helpful. Question: did you cut the printed pages? I have been trying to avoid cutting and could not tell if you did or not.
no, I don't cut the pages at all
What a great idea! Consider my mind blown 🤯
Will that cut into your clothes
once you get the hang of it, no. (in my opinion) I found I rips holes in thing much more with a regular seam ripper. Plus seam rippers get dull quick and cost more.
In case anyone is watching this over the years (because it definitely SHOULD be a demonstration every sewist eventually sees 🎉): 🩹🩸 😬 GET A SHARPS (💉🧷🪒📍📌 ) CONTAINER! You will save yourself and your trashbags a lot of stabs and holes. Not to mention all the people in waste management. They're having to deal with your trash already! Sharps containers can be disposed of in a variety of ways. Your local pharmacy, your doctor or hospital, your local government - you can search to find plenty of people and places who will SAFELY dispose of the sharps container for you, usually for free! Some places will actually exchange your container for a new empty one! Many sharps containers have a company's info on them, who will help you dispose of the sharps container. Merry Destruction! Stay safe ❤
Thank u a trillion times
Came across this site today and it's such a good idea so I will definitely try this one out. Thanks so much for the video. 😊
I recently heard about this method and am so happy to see it in action. What a find. This looks absolutely doable and so much easier than all that taping and trying to store those patterns. I’m definitely giving it a try. Thanks so much for taking the time to share this. 😃
Thank you so much. Can you show me how to do the lapped seam with this coverhem.
Do you mean a flatlock seam like you see in commercial activewear or something else? You can do a topstitched seam with this machine, but not lapped. I've experimented with it; basting, wonder tape, nothing really works. You need a true flat lock industrial ( if you are asking what I think you are asking)
Awesome! Thank you for sharing this information. I just found you on UA-cam through a search on how to hem ski pants. It brought up a 2018 Spokesman Review article and I clicked the links. Now I’ll bing watch the rest of your videos. I have a part time alterations business that I need some education on outdoor gear repair. Thank you again!
I'm just learning to sew, and I truly appreciate this. And brilliant using the sewing machine as an a vise or clamp!
Omg, this video was so hard to follow with the continuous fabric turning and concurrent explanation that then didn't make sense to me.
sorry that was my first one ever.
What model # Pellon with the grid did you use
Pellon 810 "TrueGrid"
Thank you for the demonstration .. I love how you have use the sewing machine to anchor the fabrics!
Can you please tell me what size bias tape you are using?
It is not bias tape. It is 1" nylon grosgrain ribbon from www.owfinc.com
Can you please tell me what size bias tape you are using?
Great demo showing ideas to improve upon a regular old 4 thread overlock construction seam. While making for fast and finished construction, the 514 overlock does leave a bit of bulk and also doesn't leave much seam allowance to hold a nice flat seam from the right side. That open overcast ( hong kong -esque) seam finish is a nice idea to reduce bulk and the cover hem makes for a faster process than having to topstitch both sides individually. For stretch, what do you think about using a single needle chain stitch as the construction seam then cover stitching for the top stitch? I'm not sure how well a chain stitch would last compared to a lock stitch.
I haven't worked with a chain stitch much. I always turn to ready to wear to see what's been done. They'll use chain stitch to seam jeans, but not stretch wear. I think your chain/cover has possibilities but always test.
Thank you for this video. Do you have any updated tips on how to manage thick fabric/seams? I have so much trouble with my 3550 on sweatshirt fleece or thick waistbands, any help would be greatly appreciated!
thank you! this is a very clear video and the instructions are easy to follow! thanks for sharing your expertise with us.
This is wonderful, thank you so much! Can you tell us how you know where to mark the shoulder seam mark on the collar?
Min 23. I ease the facing into place and mark the edge of the facing where it touches the shoulder seam.
You are a great teacher.
Very good technique! I am going to do this from now on. Thank you for such a good instructional video
Very good technique specially when more than one row of stitching! To you find you have to change your blade often? Thank you!
Yes, changing razorblades often is good You can tell when it gets dull. I get a box of 100 for $5 at the hardware store; lasts a very long time.
Brilliant!
Thank you so much for sharing this great technique! PDF patterns did discouraged me when to much pages, but not anymore! How genius this is…
Thank you!
Thank you! This almost has me convinced to start tracing my own patterns rather then sending them to be printed.
Thanks- I am going to try this!
I'm sure this is helpful information, but perhaps next time the camera can aim downward to completely see your hands and what you are doing with the mask. The window behind you was big and bright (but of no interest to me). I appreciate your friendly face! Also, if you made the mask originally then in this video added the darts, perhaps give viewers a link to the mask making video.
Thanks for the feedback. That was one of the first ones I made, it's a learning curve.
@@PennySchwyn -- You have a lot more courage than me! I haven't posted any videos at all (and it's likely they'd just be of local birds). I'll keep track of your channel for new uploads, because I'm sure I'll learn a lot more :)
How do you like it after a few years? I've been debating an industrial
If you can afford an industrial, that's the way to go. This machine is good, but doesn't touch an industrial.
Are you using wooly nylon (or similar) when you serge the elastic on?
Yes, but only because that is what I had in my serger for seams. I don't make a point of it; just use however machine is threaded.
I have watched 100 videos and this is my favorite! Thanks!
Brilliant!
Thank you! I really don’t feel comfortable adding nose pieces to kids masks.
Thank you for the video. Any chance you have measurements to make this type of a mask for children? Looking for something that would fit my 8-10 year olds.
beautiful and simple ❤️
When you topstitch the liner and the outer piece down the center, you direct the seem allowance towards the machine, do you go directly on top of what you just stitched, or ever so slightly to the right? I spent way too many hours on this mask fighting it but wanted to get it right because I like the design. I stumbled upon your brilliant and simple tips with my template and I’m obsessed. I feel like I won the UA-cam game of “find the right tutorial”. Yours was spot on. Sewing on a small round curve is possible! Thank you! I think using my server, and pushing the seems to the side instead of splitting them was key in saving time.
Great idea. Thank you.
Great! This is the best I’ve seen! And the easiest, especially for experienced sewers! You made it so simple. Thanks! I’m just starting and am going to use ties, too - my ears hurt just thinking about elastic around them all day. I didn’t want to use pins and love this!
Thanks for this! I’ve watched about 20 videos on how to make a mask and this is my favourite. I really appreciate your “non-fussy” approach. The less pinning the better!
Thank you for sharing this- have been working on increasing the time it takes for makng ties so I'll try this- been thinking in years to come these masks we are all making will be put in history museums to show the crisis of our time, the power of gracious women and men who sew and the strength of a people in times of need .
very helpful thanks!
Thanks for the video. Can you please do a video on how to add a nose and chin dart?
I will put that in the next one as an extra. Should be up this week sometime.
My favorite video, for sure! Measurement of fabric rectangle: 14 x 9 inches Measurement of fabric for straps: 35 x 1.5 inches; make a little snip at 12.5 inches up, to mark where to place on the mask How to finger fold end of ties: 10:10 Thanks so much for posting!
yes same here....best video and easy to understand.
Thanks so much for this video it help me out a lot! How long are you make your fabric?
35". I put the bottom of the mask at 12" and the long piece on top.
Very cool
can i make a question please? I just got my coverstitch and on the instruction video it says that when you want to remove the fabric you just pull it towards the back and cut the needle threads. my problem is that mine hardly moves. it's too stiff to move it. is it normal because it's new?
Dobrý den, Stello, měl jsem stejný problém, ale už je na chvíli propuštěn a už to není tak solidní, je to stejné jako pedál, nemohl jsem se pohybovat pomalu :) Ahoj Michaela
Hi Penny, are you having trouble releaseing the thread on tubular double cover, mine seems to be off-set and does'nt release when i lift the lever, Elaine
Try lifting the presser foot then rotating the handwheel backwards to release the thread.
