Joe’s next step is to find an engineer who shares his iconoclastic virtues. He finds that in Gordon Clark who has lost his will to be an innovative tech genius due to his commitment to raising a family.
Gordon's wife Donna finds him and Joe in the garage reverse engineering an IBM computer. Gordon admits that he needs more when Donna replies and tells him that she already has everything she could have ever wanted. She walks away and then calls Gordon a “misunderstood genius".

I would submit to you that what you saw as Joe being a creep, was actually Joe being what he was. A man who could only see a few feet in front of his face, rather than being able to see the actual future. He could see how the world would twist but not how it would turn. Cameron, on the other hand, saw how the path would wind up in the end up, cause she understood the true nature of the mechanism she was dealing with. Joe could only see the shadow of that, but what ultimately held him back were his limitations. Joe's goal was the next big thing, while Cameron's goal was the future. One is a concept, while the other is a blueprint. So, I will agree they were in a toxic relationship, but the reason the relationship is toxic is they were on diverging paths

He is a character that went from being a horrible human being that only cared about his success to a person who cared about other to a point that nearly killed him. What an amazingly written character.

Randomly hit a few H&CF clips recently, saw this one and was like meh, then I realized something. If Joe had never come along, Gordon wouldn't have been exposed to all of those chemicals... Twisted way of looking at it, but true nonetheless.... Hope the ride was worth it cause Joe cut your life short Gordon....
Mmmm no, I don’t believe so. If I am recalling correctly (and it makes sense) Gordon had been working with solder for ages, since he was at college/Berkley, so substances had been accumulating in him for quite a while - if that is the actual reason for the brain damage. Remember the Symphonic he built, the Altair 8800 kit he got + whatever other projects he had been doing in school and the like. The lead would have had ample time to build up inside him - actually, he probably wasn’t even exposed to too much when building the Giant since he had a management position at that point. Upon reexamination if Joe hadn’t come along Gordon may have died being a ‘lowly’ systems engineer at Cardiff mostly resigned and unhappy with his life (but maybe still married to Donna). By meeting Joe he went on to experience quite a lot and add to the world in a number of ways … and ended up in a relationship that seemed to make him quite happy.

They were always one step ahead of everyone else just always 1 second behind in showing the world.
The scene where they reverse engineered the IBM was awesome. Then when Donna turned up was the icing on the cake.
