    Character set colors was a weakness with Atari computers. The Commodore 64 had a much better ability to change character colors. With the limited number of sprites, character sets were a good way to build complex backgrounds, but Atari only allowed one color with 2 shades with normal small text characters.

    • @przemekosmanski
      @przemekosmanski Місяць тому

      ???But did you know that Atari had a dozen or so modes and each one looked different? And not one color with 2 shades, but 3 independent colors + background color. Unlike C64, there is no limit to the number of colors in an 8x8bit frame. Atari and C64 had completely different graphics memory organization. This cannot be compared 1:1. For me, the biggest drawback of C64 was the limited and predetermined color palette. Without the ability to choose your own.

    I had to look this up. Indeed it is a BASIC optimizing cross-compiler run on a PC to generate the machine code program to run on ATARI XL/XE computers. I though that there was no way BASIC interpreters from back then could run this fast.

    • @VictorParada
      @VictorParada 3 місяці тому

      Actually, this game was not crosscompiled. The abbreviated source code was loaded in FastBasic's IDE (*) on the 800XL computer and then parsed to create tokenized code, which is written by the same Atari to disk along a runtime interpreter to create an executable (not mandatory). So, it is not machine code but a tokenized code based on integer numbers instead of floating point BCDs, and that gives speed compared to the original Atari BASIC cartridge. You can try by yourself: inside the released disk image of my game you will find the IDE, the game source code and the instructions to load and run directly in the Atari computer. (*) The IDE is FastBasic's editor and it was also written in FastBasic, so the executable version is created using its own runtime. Take a look at github.com/dmsc/fastbasic/

      @@VictorParada Wow, very cool. So taken back in a time machine people could have been coding in this on their Atari machines before PCs. I remember that the first Apple BASIC (written by Woz I believe) was integer, likely for this reason.

      This is just a BASIC tenliner recreation of the main idea of "Fly Hunter", a game that is being developed for the Atari 2600 console. In this case, the difficulty increases as you get points, because the frog might reappear just below you after a jump, giving no chance to escape. It is not a single difficulty that you could master. But you are right, the original game has lots of potential.

    Hola Victor. Te felicito por el juego, EXCELENTE. Vi también la publicación original. Es una verdadera lastima que no tengamos mas incentivos para crear mas software para computadoras o consolas antiguas (no me va la palabra RETRO). Así que te felicito por tu trabajo. Eso si, ahora tengo preguntas. Se le podría poner otros obstáculos como pozos y ademas ponerle un fondo con un efecto tipo Paralax?. Este Atari Basic es para XL, yo conozco que existe Batari Basic y Visual Batari, lo he intentado usar, pero la documentación es muy pobre y me he quedado atascado en el desarrollo de alguno que otro juego para Atari 2600. Insisto, en castellano no existen videos o tutoriales buenos o que sean útiles. Nuevamente gracias por compartir el video.

    • @VictorParada

      ¡Gracias! Efectivamente este mini juego fue programado usando Atari BASIC, el lenguaje que traían incorporado los computadores XL y XE. Es un lenguaje que daba prestaciones básicas, aunque suficientes para la época, pero en donde la velocidad no era su fuerte. Por lo mismo, en este juego utilicé algunos trucos que hacen parecer muy fluidas las cosas cuando en realidad sólo estoy engañando al hardware para que muestre lo que quiero y hacer que el juego se vea atractivo y jugable (¿para qué sirve un juego que nadie quiere jugar?). Además, este juego fue programado con restricciones adicionales impuestas por un concurso: sólo 10 líneas de código BASIC de hasta 80 caracteres cada una. De esas 10 líneas, 5 son de preparación del escenario y las otras 5 tienen el control del juego. Respecto de mejoras a realizar, si le quitamos las restricciones del concurso, podría agregarle más tipos de obstáculos como pozos o premios a recolectar que mejoren el puntaje. Sin embargo, por la forma en que fue desarrollado, no sería simple poner un paralax (aquí no se nota, pero toda la pantalla superior se mueve cuando el Correcaminos avanza o salta, no se trata de un simple "sprite" porque no lo es, y la carretera es en realidad una ventana de texto propia de los modos gráficos del Atari). Se podría poner paralax, pero no sería efectivo usando la misma versión de BASIC, y sería mucho mejor usar un BASIC más avanzado como Fastbasic para los computadores Atari XL/XE. Yo también tengo un poco de experiencia programando para 2600, pero sólo he concluido un único juego de 2K en assembler. Tengo dos más a medio camino (en realidad abandonados por ahora) y un tercero como prototipo en Batari Basic (también abandonado). Efectivamente no hay muchos lugares con información en español, pero que la haya en inglés es mejor a que sea en alemán o polaco!!!

      Gracias @@VictorParada por contestarme con respecto al juego. Bueno, todo lo que te comente es por que vi un ejemplo, un fork hecho en app inventor. Y esta muy bueno, lo tomaron como ejemplo de tu juego y hacen referencia a tu video directamente. El programador te dio TODO el crédito al respecto, eso me genero la duda y vine a parar a tu canal. También le hice el mismo comentario al programador del OTRO juego. Pero, sinceramente cuando veo al correcaminos, PIENSO INDUDABLEMENTE EN EL MOON PATROL. Es la mecánica del juego de los 80s. Por eso pensé en el efecto parallax, saltar, disparar.... en vez de cactus eran naves extraterrestres y rocas, ademas de huecos en el piso. Lo otro es que la dirección del otro juego es de izquierda a derecha y este es al reves. Se obvio que es la misma mecánica de juego. Aca entra mi duda, hay un moon patrol para Atari XL? Seria bueno que exista ;P Yo soy programador pero de ZX Spectrum o deveria decir CZ, pero tengo TK85s, TK90s, Commodore 64, Amigas 500-1200 y una MSX DPC 200, y varias PC desde 386 hasta Ryzens. O sea, estoy hace rato en el mundo de la informática. Te felicito y ESTARIA MUY BUENO QUE PONGAS UNOS TUTORIALES DE PROGRAMACION EN XL :D. En castellano falta mucho material para aprender cosas viejas y hay mucha gente con ganas de aprender. Lo se por que lo charlo en varios foros. Continua así, Muchas gracias por tus videos!

    • @VictorParada
      @VictorParada 3 місяці тому

      Gracias por el aviso del fork. No es la primera vez que alguien lleva mi juego al siguiente nivel o a otra plataforma, de la misma forma que yo lo he hecho con algunos de mis mini juegos (son simplificaciones extremas para ser programadas en condiciones extremas; ese es el desafío). Respecto de la dinámica de este juego en particular, el punto es que debes coordinar el salto sobre el cactus sin golpearse con el cohete que va en dirección contraria, es decir, debes buscar rápidamente el mejor lugar para hacer el salto. Al poner más obstáculos al mismo tiempo en pantalla probablemente se transforme en un juego imposible de pasar. Por si no lo notaste, el cactus siempre pasa a la misma velocidad, pero la velocidad del cohete varía, y a medida que vas ganando puntos en este juego, el cohete puede tomar velocidades mucho mayores, por lo que no podrás encontrar un patrón para jugar indefinidamente. ¡Y el azar también cuenta! Esta dinámica es muy distinta a la del Moon Patrol (independiente de hacia qué lado sea el scroll). Para Atari hay más de una versión del juego e incluso modificaciones de la comunidad homebrew para transformarlo en algo más cercano estéticamente al juego original. De hecho, yo también hice mi propia versión simplificada (la puedes buscar en mi página web siguiendo el enlace en la descripción del video o buscando el respectivo video en mi canal), en la que implementé el paralax y con saltos que se van complicando a medida que vas avanzando en las zonas. Como dije, estas simplificaciones son sólo para poder cumplir con el desafío de las 10 líneas de código BASIC, pero además de Moon Patrol, he logrado hacer versiones reducidas de Mario Bros, Defender, Space Invaders, Centipede, Defender, Tunnel Hunt y Q*Bert para juegos arcade, manteniendo la esencia del juego o de una parte de él. Todos mis juegos liberados están publicados en mi página web, con código fuente documentado, pero en inglés para llegar a más comunidades. Si quieres llevar alguno de ellos a ZX Spectrum o CZ, ¡adelante! pero mantenme informado y tal vez pueda ayudarte (aunque no conozco otras plataforma fuera de la ZX-81, donde alguna vez también hice jueguitos).

      Sometimes, the setup takes most of the coding space. That might include bitmaps, charsets, level screens, lists or tables with predefined/precomputed values, etc... The challenge is to find the point where the algorithm to unpack plus the data is shorter than the original coding.

    Any chance of a link to, or a breakdown of how this is put together? And are we looking at this on real hardware in this video? Because emulators can reduce or eliminate flicker, so if this is real hardware, it is very impressively solid

    • @VictorParada
      @VictorParada 2 роки тому

      ¡Hola! There is no flicker at all. This demo uses a DLI that swaps all the 4 playfield color registers on every scanline between 2 palettes, so you can have 8 colors in total at the same time for a "virtual GRAPHICS 2" text mode. To use the first palette, the pixels must be present only on the first scanline, and to use the other, the pixels must be on the other scanline. If a pixel is present on both scanlines, you get a "compound color", and there are only 4 posibilities, so the total number of colors in this text mode is 12. Given that, the trick was to split every GR.2 (ANTIC 7, 8 double-scanlines) into two GR.1 (ANTIC 6, 8 single-scanlines), using one charset for the first half of the text line and another charset for the bottom half, so each text line is only 4 "pixels" height in terms of double scanlines, and both text lines give you back full 8 bits in the "virtual text line". This required a customized display list, where each pair of GR.1 lines points to the same data, i.e. each byte of screen memory is displayed twice but in halves. BTW, the DLI also changes the charset register every 8 scanlines to match the text lines. In this example, I copied digits 0 to 9 bitmaps on the new charsets and also added a "solid" block, three times each, using even, odd and both scanlines, with a total of 33 of the 64 characters available to those text modes. At this point, I guess that you noticed that you cannot fit the whole alphabet 3 times in the charset source, but you can design some nice tiles for games. Most of the Fastbasic listing can be reviewed during the first 30 seconds of the video. Truncated lines are the DLI setup.

      @@VictorParada sloooowly. Everyone here took turns getting sick with the virus of unnamed origin . Then I had to get shot for work and that was even worse for me. I did a little bit this week working on a menu system for game modes and options. This is going to be a while longer.

    I just got a 130XE from a friend. I had no software for it so I looked for some short BASIC games to type in. I found your 10-liners and tried this one last night. It was pretty fun! I don't know much about BASIC but I'm still impressed you were able to make this with so little code.

      So you also got a set of paddles. Great! There are many type-in Atari BASIC games to try in my page, some using paddles, some using joystick. Have fun...

      Some flavors of BASIC provide statements to draw circles or manage sprites. FastBasic provides a general purpose DLI statement.

      It is NOT an Atari 2600 game. It is a game for the XL/XE computer series... I think it should also run in the old Atari 800.
