Dad the Dungeon Master
Приєднався 25 сер 2014
Dad the Dungeon Master has been a DM for over 10 years, but only found Dungeons & Dragons in his early 20s. He began writing short stories around the same time and the creative spark only grew from there. He began his UA-cam channel @DadtheDungeonMaster in early 2024 with a short story "The Ruby Wizard" being published shortly after. He hopes to inspire others to play D&D and show creatives that dreams can be achieved by dedication and hard work.
As a laborer in a factory, he dedicates precious free time away from his family to create informative and entertaining UA-cam content. His long format videos aim to simplify what can be complicated campaign module material in the hopes of aiding Dungeon Masters in more efficiently running their campaigns, while his shorts are aimed at capturing the culture of the game.

That's a lot of combat for a Lvl 2 party without healing and rests.
@@SwampySi i know! And the book wants them to do it at level 1!!!
I voted for OUT OF THE ABYSS !!!! UNDERDARK 4 LIIIIIIIIFE BROTHER !!!
Dude I totally dig your show Thank You for your advice
@gojirajenkins8528 Thanks for the feedback! It means a lot to me. Happy to be able to help!
Idea! Make a villain that actually planned everything from the very start. All the character's back story would somehow by the villain's doing, and the party comes together because the bbeg planned it that way. You can make it that they even planned their defeat in case the party can actually kick their ass
We're going to make a villian that our heroes unknowingly tormented. When ever the heroes go on missions they would attack the majority of his cohorts. Even when going from place to place, the heroes would unwittingly follow. Then at long last, vowing revenge he commissions a customized weapon to use against our heroes. Then as they are battling a completely different enemy this hidden villian manages to get his revenge on our heroes using pie. Just then everyone is wondering who that was.
Just because they have a trait in common doesn't make it a copy
My current bbeg is a ancient purple dragon, they are leading an undead uprising. Kinda cliche but it’s my first campaign.
Cliche is a solid starting point. Tropes became tropes because everyone loved the ideas
@ fair point! My players have been loving it so far, and we finished session 20 last week. I hope we have many more to come, I’ve even put a ton of time into making homebrew for my campaign that me and my players prefer over the base dnd. I have a hombres magic system, brewing system, a custom lycanthropy and vampire mastery system, and I even made a system for my warforged to be able to replace parts of his body with other metals. There is more but it’s been a lot of fun.
@jidderbug6611 that sounds amazing. Great stuff!
My best bbeg was a lich who everyone was all "omg what a villain we gotta stop him!" Got the party super invested in stopping the evil guy then they stumbled upon some old ruins when they were trying to track him down only to discover old memoir's and letters between him and his family when he was just a wizard and not a lich trying to find a relic to save their brother's life, and one of the party realised "shit, that relic is the thing he's using to do evil shit" so they looked into it (both in and out of game) and we're like "dude... Fuck you... How do we free this guy..." It's the only one I've managed to do it with, but the party went full swing from "gotta kill lich Hitler" to oh shit this guy's fall on Stockholm syndrome mind controlled and just wanted to save his family and is probably still trying to do that... Awwwwww.... We need to give him a hug and tell him the war is over..."
Brilliant 👏
Make a guy who's just bored and paying everyone to oretend like he's a bad guy just so he can have a talk with the difrent people who come to try and stop him only to realise that "gary" is just an ordinary guy who's bored, rich and lonely
Do all three as one
And then there’s me: cartoonishly evil
Look at my name. If you recognize it, it means you're probably one of my players. If so, STOP READING. I've got a robot cowboy engineer from another universe that's trying to enslave a corrupted amalgamation of 3 gods from their home realm using the technologies of the world they've arived in. Oh, they also use a broken fragment of a goddess from their home realm which they've enslaved to create a bridge between worlds. One of my players is an avatar of this fragmented goddess but doesn't know it, just believing themselves to be a god themself. This BBEG also spans across 3 of my campaigns between two different campaign settings (Grim Hollow & Eberron).
@@TheElectrikCow This is amazing!!! "Robot cowboy engineer" is like poetry to me
Personally, My BBEG is just straight up evil, kidnaps the players, and kills them in the first session. Cause the BBEG fully believes he's the main character. He has absolutly no redeeming qualities, and I love him.
Made a bbeg suggestion of the bbeg being a guy that was in the background of every nat 20 perception check. This guy vividly stands out. *blip* no further info provided. Start looking for him. Cant find him unless you make a nat 20 perception... or you are alone in a room with him. Roll initiative. Need to score higher than 18 to go first.
I was dm on a couple sessions once because my group wanted to see what I could do creatively. The BBEG was a wandering salesman the team had grown attatched to over time and had learned their abilities. He had a hidden stash of spellbooks and caltrops that he collected and/or created in his travels that he would use to counter certain abilities that made the team strong. Slowly whittling them down into nothing. - Another idea I had was to collaborate with someone from the group to secretly be the BBEG like an amongus style villain. Slowly growing with the group, taking abilities to counter certain stratagies. Tragic betrayals are my bread and butter in stories 😂
@@ofox716 that's awesome! In my Vecna game, one of the players is secretly Kas in disguise.
The BBEG of my campaign is a psychotic drider who's been working with a coven of necromancers to murder surface drow and turn them into an army of driders made of bones. So far the party has no idea this is going on, as theyre still in the beginning portion of the campaign and i need to get them to at least 5th level for them to stand a chance at the rest of the plot
Its like edd sheron said about music every cord conbinagions been done before Story ideas have all been done you just have have cun with ih
Make it the bar keep of the bar they start the game in. And have the fight end in the bar too, just an enlarged bar. And the bar keep can animate any in the bar.
Make it the barkeep who they keep coming back to and where they first met 😅
Bring in the Generational Combo: Long lost Dad telling his Bullied Long Lost Son that he didn't know, that they'll both teach the Party a lesson. If there's a Paladin or Monk or Cleric in the group, have them join the BBEG
I once had a villian that was just really petty They disrupted his experiment and he decided his whole life would be all about making the players suffer
@@kingofawesomerulse3625 get 'em!!!
Reminds me of reverse flash
Thanks so much for this in-depth guide on Talhundereth! Your breakdown is packed with valuable tips that make this area a lot more interesting to run. You've really helped bring Talhundereth to life for DMs, making it a must-watch for anyone planning this adventure. Highly recommend this video to all DMs looking to elevate their campaign. Keep the videos coming! My party is going to be there in a week or two.
@Dionysus. Thanks for the feedback, it means a lot to me! So glad I could help!
I actually have it as an already played out Villian, he’s just a frail old man who’s definitely a bad person but can’t really do anything (yet)
@@100spookyskelly nice!
Say it with me everything is a trope and every trope is a cliche
@@crystalknighthgaming and every cliche is a platitude
Okay, but hear me out Estranged father that was mean in the first session
@crimson2188 lol! Then he reconciles with his child, who's a player character, and you think he's a good guy the whole time. Then, at the very end, it turns out he was manipulating the party, and he really is the bad guy!
49:38 The buckler being strapped to your arm leaving your hand free is just game designers reaching a level of unparalleled ignorance. Pathfinder has such a level of complexity that serves no other purpose than being complex for complexity's sake. It is not historically accurate, does not help serve verisimilitude, bogs down game play; and with a few options that are far superior to others being the obvious optimal choice, offers nothing but the illusion of choice. It's cràp de la cràp.
Could always go the Aizen route. Make a seemingly nice and humble dude get assassinated. Only to turn out he faked his own death to carry out his plot
I mean...the party's immortal, unkillable traveling companion is actually one member's father. Neither of them know it, yet, because his wife died in childbirth thanks to experiments he didn't know about, and her brother took the child before he came back to try and save her, being told both his wife and daughter died before he made it back. Is going to be a big, emotional moment.
@@JamesCaramonHarris what is that one a reference to?
@@ignis1984 It's not intentionally one. I was brainstorming with one of my players, and she had a rather...dark...series of ideas for her character's backstory, but I suggested some things not so depraved, but just as heartbreaking, and pitched her the idea of her harsh treatment leading to her being sold to the arena (time travel shenanigans having her character be from 4k years ago, when slavery and such was rampant due to the dominant race of elves, referred to as the Ancients in present day, being known for major scientific advancements, but fucked-up ideologies), and kick-starting her hatred of elves, was due to her father being her maternal uncle, who took her in after her mother died, then had a son, so he didn't want her anymore. Styklr, the super-cursed "goblin" (as in he looks like Styx from the games, but isn't really a goblin), having lost another beloved, aided the slave girl he met years later, whom he treated as a daughter, in doing so, becoming the closest thing to a father she ever had, neither knowing their bond was truer than they knew. So, finding out her father was her uncle, and that her real father's still alive is going to be a major part of her character arc in the future. I haven't told my player who her character's father is yet, and him being her favorite npc, I think she'll rather enjoy the surprise.
Remixes are solid but if I can’t use these themes/tropes what can I use?!?!
@@bryantlookingbill8261 lol, there are no new ideas. Just recombinations of old ones
4 points baby
@@thekrippler5737 heck yeah!
That escalated quickly... 😅 What a twist! 😂
I have to disagree strongly on you saying DnD better incentivizes homebrew and narrative. Pathfinder outright tells you in the rulebooks that you are fully encouraged to homebrew and do your own thing to have fun, and it is supported by the rules actually giving tables and explanations so you are very clear on how to make the most of the system, like the math for encounter difficulty actually working so you know what to expect when creating an encounter. Homebrew feels like a necessity for 5e because of how poorly mechanics are defined and unable to cover for what the system needs, with it really not helping like having to choose between an ability score increase of a feat for flavor as an example.
I’m sorry sir I hail from California and I do declare both those sounded I swear sounded exactly the same to my perfectly trained ear. ❤

What level were the PCs that they were able to defeat Strad?
@@BLynn level 14
I don't use stun except on special occasions. I generally tell them they can use a bonus action or a half a move action, and have disadvantage on DEX saves & ability checks until the effect ends or until the end of their next turn.
@@BLynn That's a pretty nice compromise! I might just use that.
I have experience with the two systems as a player and as a GM/DM. To be honest Pathfinder makes it more easy for the GM's to lead. It gives us the exact rules and rarely the GM has to homebrew something. Also for me specifically makes my prep a bit easier and I feel that it is more rewarding for the players. Note to be made is also that Pathfinder can actually be played up to level 20 without any issues. Related to the feats In Pathfinder you can also change feats between levels/downtime (some of them are permanent though). Related to D&D - I think at least for 5e from 2014 is more beginner friendly for players. It is way easy to understand the basics, but there are some places where the explanations are a bit vague. If you are a DM it is a bit harder and requires for you to be able to create a rule on the spot. To touch on the combat aspect from the two systems: D&D is a bit faster than Pathfinder, that said if a PC decides to do something different from attacking and tries to improvise, I as a DM should think of a rule/check or something so I can allow that action to pass. In Pathfinder I have a big list of actions that can be performed and in almost all cases my players with their extravagant descriptions of what they want to do are falling in one of the actions in that list so for me it is easy to ask them to perform a check or to ask them if they fulfill the requirement for that action to happen. IMO: Play whatever you want, lead whatever you want, it does not matter if you have fun. That said keep few things in mind: Pathfinder - Low levels combat is a bit of nightmare for the players but the system is designed for the them to burn trough resources to be victorious. Encourage your players to use their spells. - Pathfinder requires more tactical combat and the use of different interactions between foes and friends. Make sure that your players do not rely only on damage. - If you are a GM keep the enemy around the party level, maybe add one or two on a level above, but know that getting hit from a level above is devastating some times. - The death mechanic is way complicated and on top of everything new my players had to learn I decided to go with the one from D&D. D&D - It is way easy to get into D&D game because requires way less from the players to know before starting. Also it is less intimidating. - Requires more improvisation from the DM related to mechanics or rules. The DM knows that there is huge amount of improvisation but lets keep it to the story not to the ruling. - Most of the times one adventure does not get over level 12-13 so you rarely will feel the full power of your character. This happens because some PC can one shot bosses if a DM does not prepare some sort of mechanic that has to be done to bring the boss down. Or the PC start to get their hands on very OP Spells, Items and the game starts to get meaningless.
