I'm very happy that I got it, seeds from two species native to Brazil. Copernicia prunifera, and Attalea funifera. In addition to an Elaeis guineensis.
I wonder what it aspires to be one day when it grows up?
need to put them two in pots? or a asingle is enough?
Nice palms
Thank you!
Cool! 👍 love your passion 😎👌
I appreciate it!
Hi, I live in the UK Blackpool I have two very young bismarkia nobilis silver palms but this year there has not been allot of sunny days I keep them on a south facing windowsill , I have noticed that I have discolouring leaves 3-4 inches on the tips, ends of the leaves any advice would be so much appreciated. Kind regards Frank.
You have a good collection
Thank you!
Hi, can you tell me about your overall winter conditions, like did it go below 25F many times during the nights but did it warm up during the day because I live in Hungary where the wheter might be a little colder during the night (lower 20s) but usually it is above freezing during the day and I am not sure if I can leave them outside all winter
I've had them outside overnight around 24F, but it was a dry cold and brief. Mine are in pots, so they aren't as cold tolerant as if they were in the ground. Low 20's are borderline for these palms. If your winters stay cold and wet for extended periods of time then they would not do so well. Kind of a problem where I live, so I have to babysit them in the winter. If the overnight freezes are dry and brief, then they shouldn't have too much of an issue, but I would try and protect them if the temp is going to drop under 25F.
Those are looking great I’ve Been collecting some rarer palms and now have a hyphaene thebacia (African gingerbread palm) growing good in a container in Atlanta they are a close relative of Bismarck seems to have a similar growth i enjoy your videos here’s my channel if your interested ua-cam.com/video/sQCKmUqEiBo/v-deo.htmlsi=CKlBTWykOej4oJWI
Hey just bought one of these and they are about 8-9 years of age, 2-3 feet tall in a 25 Gal pot, was wondering how many times would you water em in a zone 13? Tropical Climate
They’re very drought tolerant, so depending on how much rain you get in your climate, I would say about once a week. Tropical climates usually have enough humidity. I’ll water mine about twice a week when it’s really hot and dry during summer, but usually no more than that.
@@zonehardypalms1188 thanks for the tip !
Hi can you tell me how many spikes from a bismarkia till I get a proper frond please I have had four on both of mine.
It can vary, but usually I’ll get 5 or 6 strap leaves before the fan fronds come in. Even then they might only be slightly divided until they grow a bit bigger, usually once they form a small trunk.
Thank you very much I will be more patient, regards Frank
Hi ,I have managed to germinate these bismarkia seeds I have two that have made it ,please can you tell me when I can expect a fan frond they have both got four single fronds any advice would be appreciated thank you. Regards Frank.
I had 3 out of 7 germinating.
That’s great! I can only get about half my seeds to germinate the couple of times I’ve started them, maybe less, but all of my seeds were ordered online. Really depends on how fresh they are.
@@zonehardypalms1188 Most of mine are floating when I soak them 🤣🤣😅 I leave them in the bag for 40 days, is that about right?
@Pippie5555 That’s no good! I’ll leave mine in the bag for up to a couple of months. I’ll check them occasionally to make sure they aren’t rotting. Any that don’t germinate during that time will go through the float test again. Old seeds usually don’t do well for me though.
@@zonehardypalms1188 Oh thank you so much!!!
The most critical question how old are they at this time?
A lot of these started spring 2021, so about 2 and a half years old when this video was posted.
Great info subbed. I took 6 seeds off mine last week. I've grown plenty of Trachycarpus but none of these so just trying two methods, baggy for 3 and the other 3 straight into a small pot covered with clear wrap to keep humidity in and placed in greenhouse. I removed the seed's 'skin' first was that the right thing to do? 😊
Thanks for the sub! That’s a good strategy splitting up the seeds to see what works. I like doing that too with some of the seeds I get. Yes, taking the skin off does help. If they’re really fresh you should get a good germination rate either way.
is that grow mulch in the pots? how often are you watering those seedlings?
There’s pine bark mixed in with the soil for extra drainage. We’ve been getting decent rain lately, so haven’t been giving them extra water. Long streaks of dry hot weather I’ll give them a good water every 2-3 days in the evening.
I have got some butia coming up finally since 2months. I have also 1 sproutet latania seed and 2 trachy carpus seedlings.
That’s awesome! Two months seems pretty quick for Butia seeds. Mine took two years! 😆
@@zonehardypalms1188 they are butia eriospatha I heard they are more cold hardy and sprout faster then other butias
How to identify females and males Bismarck palms
The males have a dark colored “snake like” inflorescence under the crown and females will have the actual seeds under the crown. Females will still grow seed regardless of pollination, but they won’t be viable.

Are these Cold Hardy? We live in 7b Long Island.
9b and above in most cases. They will need some heavy winter protection in zone 7b. Especially in areas with wet, cold winters. I’m in zone 8b and still have issues with spear pulls. Mostly from prolonged wet, cold conditions. They handle dry cold much better if freezes are brief.
@@zonehardypalms1188 okay thank you
Fantastic thanks for the video
Thank you
Great variety that Mexican Fan has a Chunky Trunk lots of wood 🪵
Yes sir! Seems like the width has tripled in the last few years.
I feel the way you're feeling. 🤞🤞
Appreciate it! 🤞🤞
Beautiful plants Stay connected new subscriber 😊
Thank you very much!
I live in Wilmington nc in the downtown area , sable palms grow naturally here along with the jelly palms. I totally believe there are people like you and myself that love to push the zone which I feel is alot of work , im thinking seriously about moving on into Florida.
I totally get it. I may end up relocating at some point from where I currently live. It can be an energy and money drain keeping these palms alive year after year. Zone pushing has been fun, but can’t say I’ll be doing it forever.
How can I make a difference between a male and a female bismarckia plz
Once they’re older and start flowering you’ll notice round green fruit develop on the female palm. The male palms will have a brown inflorescence almost snake like looking and won’t contain actual seeds.
I have 5 seeds. Haven't germinated them yet
Have you had experience with jubaeopsis? Do you think these germinate similar to jubaea?
No experience, but I've heard the name. Apparently, Jubaeopsis are difficult to germinate as well, but not sure if they're more difficult than Jubaea. Seems quite rare too!
Goodjob
@@zonehardypalms1188 thank you, have 3 of these in the propegator rn
Yep, same here, tipping tall containers...but I was told that sabal like to spread theirs roots so I'll stick to them😮😂.
True! I try to upsize from the tall pots into at least a 3-5 gallon so the roots can spread out a bit. So far it seems to be working ok.
great update!
Thank you!
Happy birthday to the Palm, may it find its way into the earth to realize its full potential someday lol🙌🌴
lol, thanks! Gonna be extra picky about where I plant it.
Where are you going to plant them?
Winter is always hard, but still you have a very nice palm collection!
Thank you! They should start perking up now with the warmer weather.
winter rly took a hit
Why is there so much water in you're trays you keep the pots in ,that will rot the roots being stood in water for long period.Like that ! They don't like being stood in water !
It had just rained and the trays hadn't been drained yet. They don't stay like that.
have you had experience with the delidding technic of palmseeds?
Not yet. Thinking about trying it at some point.
Да классний ботанический сад так деражать хлопчино ...
This is actually a great idea to keep them potted... I always wanted to plant them but they would get huge here in CA so I haven't.
Yeah, I want to get it in the ground someday, but want to make sure it’s in a place where it won’t be taken out by a freeze in a few years.
I had one in a pot for 3-4 years I finally put it in the ground and it grow more in one summer than all four years in the pot.
I believe it! Mine would probably be 50 feet tall today if it had been left in the ground.
@@zonehardypalms1188 For sure
Hello. I've recently subscribed to your channel. And I've finally caught up. I've been growing cold hardy palms up here in Northern Nevada Zone 7.
Cool, thanks for the subscribe! I lived in northwest Reno about a decade ago for a couple of years, so it will be interesting to see what you’re growing there.
Hello, i have gotten myself some butia, syagrus and brahea seeds. Whats the best way to germinate them relatively fast? since from what i heard these can take months.
Some seeds take a while regardless. The baggie method should help boost the Syagrus and Butia seeds. Haven’t started Syagrus before, but had Butia take over 2 years to sprout in an open pot. Brahea are dry loving palms, so I wouldn’t start those in the bag due to the high humidity. Those I would start in an open pot in a warm area. Some seeds will just take a while.
@@zonehardypalms1188 thank you
Hi, can you help me please with my spear pull, that has just happened on my Roystonea? I never had one before. Should I apply hydrogen peroxide every day for a week or rather apply only once and then trying to keep crownshaft as dry as possible? Thank you very much in advance. Has your Bismarckia recovered?
I would apply hydrogen peroxide and watch for bubbling. That means there’s some moisture in there. I usually give it about a day between applications until there’s no more bubbling. Usually only a couple of applications will do. Keep the crown as dry as possible. If the crown gets wet for some reason, I’ll give it another application afterwards. My Bismarckia aren’t growing new spears yet, but the older fronds are looking great. They will need more steady heat before the new growth starts. Staying positive.
you have quite a good audio on your videos. can I ask you what are you recording with? or are you using external mic?
Thanks! I use a $30 Sony clip-on mic plugged into a Canon DSLR camera for most of my videos. The Sony ECM-LV1 is the latest model for the one I have.
Thank you for the info. For only $30 it has very nice quality.
How are these doing now? Thawed? Alive? Amazing lol!
They’re recuperating. 3 out of the 4 Brazoria look like they’ll bounce back. The other one I’ll have to keep an eye on. Did an update video yesterday going into more detail. They got shocked pretty good!
What growing medium have you used for your palms?
I use MiracleGro Palm, Cactus, and Succulent soil for the potted palms and add poultry grit and pine bark for extra drainage. For seed starting with the "baggie method" I use orchid moss.
I’m glad it survived. Can’t wait for the next update.
Appreciate it!
Great update! Thanks for the cool video. Cheers
Thank you!
Always looking forward to yours updates. Since we're basically growing rhe same palms. I was surprised by the damage, on those minors 😮 My fastest palms are Louisiana (Texas) Brazoria (NC) Bermunada(AZ) from seeds of course. Keep updating. Take care.☀️🌴👋
Thanks Alex! I think if the minors were in the ground they would have been fine. I think the roots froze up and then thawed too quickly in those small pots. Probably in shock. Yeah, we are definitely growing many of the same palms. I’ve really grown to like many of the Sabal varieties. Incredibly versatile palms!
you should of planted it it would of been like 25ft right now
