    Hi, can you tell me about your overall winter conditions, like did it go below 25F many times during the nights but did it warm up during the day because I live in Hungary where the wheter might be a little colder during the night (lower 20s) but usually it is above freezing during the day and I am not sure if I can leave them outside all winter

    • @zonehardypalms1188
      @zonehardypalms1188 Місяць тому

      I've had them outside overnight around 24F, but it was a dry cold and brief. Mine are in pots, so they aren't as cold tolerant as if they were in the ground. Low 20's are borderline for these palms. If your winters stay cold and wet for extended periods of time then they would not do so well. Kind of a problem where I live, so I have to babysit them in the winter. If the overnight freezes are dry and brief, then they shouldn't have too much of an issue, but I would try and protect them if the temp is going to drop under 25F.

    Hey just bought one of these and they are about 8-9 years of age, 2-3 feet tall in a 25 Gal pot, was wondering how many times would you water em in a zone 13? Tropical Climate

    • @zonehardypalms1188
      @zonehardypalms1188 Місяць тому

      They’re very drought tolerant, so depending on how much rain you get in your climate, I would say about once a week. Tropical climates usually have enough humidity. I’ll water mine about twice a week when it’s really hot and dry during summer, but usually no more than that.

    • @zonehardypalms1188

      It can vary, but usually I’ll get 5 or 6 strap leaves before the fan fronds come in. Even then they might only be slightly divided until they grow a bit bigger, usually once they form a small trunk.

      @Pippie5555 That’s no good! I’ll leave mine in the bag for up to a couple of months. I’ll check them occasionally to make sure they aren’t rotting. Any that don’t germinate during that time will go through the float test again. Old seeds usually don’t do well for me though.

    Great info subbed. I took 6 seeds off mine last week. I've grown plenty of Trachycarpus but none of these so just trying two methods, baggy for 3 and the other 3 straight into a small pot covered with clear wrap to keep humidity in and placed in greenhouse. I removed the seed's 'skin' first was that the right thing to do? 😊

    • @zonehardypalms1188
      @zonehardypalms1188 2 місяці тому

      Thanks for the sub! That’s a good strategy splitting up the seeds to see what works. I like doing that too with some of the seeds I get. Yes, taking the skin off does help. If they’re really fresh you should get a good germination rate either way.

      The males have a dark colored “snake like” inflorescence under the crown and females will have the actual seeds under the crown. Females will still grow seed regardless of pollination, but they won’t be viable.

    • @zonehardypalms1188

      Some seeds take a while regardless. The baggie method should help boost the Syagrus and Butia seeds. Haven’t started Syagrus before, but had Butia take over 2 years to sprout in an open pot. Brahea are dry loving palms, so I wouldn’t start those in the bag due to the high humidity. Those I would start in an open pot in a warm area. Some seeds will just take a while.

    Hi, can you help me please with my spear pull, that has just happened on my Roystonea? I never had one before. • @zonehardypalms1188
      @zonehardypalms1188 5 місяців тому

      I would apply hydrogen peroxide and watch for bubbling. That means there’s some moisture in there. I usually give it about a day between applications until there’s no more bubbling. Usually only a couple of applications will do. Keep the crown as dry as possible. If the crown gets wet for some reason, I’ll give it another application afterwards. My Bismarckia aren’t growing new spears yet, but the older fronds are looking great. They will need more steady heat before the new growth starts. Staying positive.
