    Taking into account the cost of living in croatia Salaries in croatia are not low. croatia has one of the best quality of life, lifestyle and way of living in the world. The reason why some croats left is simply becouse of various circumstances in history and also with mentality of us croats where everything else and everywhere else is better than us which of course is totally wrong. By the way wonderful videos, thank you carol anne and sara

      Hey Marin, thank you so much! We are super thrilled that you are enjoying our videos. I agree that Croatia has a great quality of life and way of living. As an American, I've changed a lot in terms of work/life balance after seeing the example of Croatians. I agree that not everything outside Croatia is better. Personally, my life is better here than it was or could be in the US. BUT, everybody is different. It's all about what is important to you.

      Hi Jelena, thank you for reaching out! There are a few more factors to look at to determine which path is best for you, but you could explore both options. I've put two links for you in the description of this video, both related to the process for citizenship. One is for spouses, and one is for those applying based on descent. Take a look at those. If you'd like someone to validate which claim is best and help you with the process, fill out the form at the bottom of either post. You'll get a free consultation with a lawyer who will guide you on the best path and how they can help.

    On the property sale question. I thought the costs were all allocated on the side of the buyer. Eg, agents fee plus their vat. Council transfer cost and lawyers costs. Meaning the seller does not pay to sell. Eg. a €250k property will incur around another €20k in associated costs to buy (not sell).

    • @ExpatinCroatia
      @ExpatinCroatia 19 днів тому

      Hi there, thank you for the comment! Not always. It depends on the situation and what the seller has arranged with the real estate agency. Usually, both the seller and the buyer get charged a fee, but sometimes the agency makes an arrange for exclusive rights to sell, in which case they give the seller a break on the fee. It can vary wildly from case to case, agency to agency.

Also, you can conscientously object. That means instead of military service, you can do civil service, which is learning first aid and helping with community projects.

    Just to add a little insight into this topic from someone who has lived it. In 1995 when I moved to Croatia for a job I received my draft notice to do my compulsory military service for 10 months. I was sent to Koprivnica for 3 months of basic training then to Borongaj in Zagreb for my work assignment. Basic training was interesting, I was put in a “special” class of recruits who didn’t really fit in with the other young 18 year olds. We were all between 25-28 from a variety of backgrounds. ( if you have ever watched the movie Stripes with Bill Murray it was kind of like that) We had 4 from Germany, one French foreign Legion dropout , a failed police recruit, a HOS veteran who’s fighting on the front lines during the war was not recognized, a merchant sailor a few petty criminals who spent time in jail and one guy who had some mental issues and a few guys who avoided service while in university and me the American. We were kept away from the normal recruits so as not to set a bad example since all of us were already developed individuals and couldn’t be broken down and built up again like the 18 year olds could. At times it sucked like guard duty at 3:00am outside in -15C weather at other times the jokes and laughter helped build a bond among us. Almost 30 years later I still stay in contact with some of my old buddies from the army and I am glad I served and would highly recommend it to everyone. I feel that a well designed program of 3 or 4 months would be all that is needed today to help this young generation to mature and develop some skills and install a sense of pride and patriotism. I see this as something very positive for everyone.

      Wow, thank you for sharing this! Sounds like your unit was quite the eclectic, rag tag bunch of individuals! Very interesting, indeed. I'm glad to hear that you found it to be a good experience, made some lifelong friends and think it would be good for young people now. That's really positive, overall. Thank you again for taking the time to share the experience that you had. I'm certain it will be helpful to others.

      We are getting questions from Croatian citizens who are concerned about being drafted because they don't speak Croatian. Did you speak Croatia when you were in the service? Did the others with you?

    • @nickynamey1639
      @nickynamey1639 Місяць тому

      @@ExpatinCroatia I spoke “kitchen Croatian” meaning just in my family and to my grandparents. Mainly a mix of English and basic Croatian words at a 3rd grade level. It wasn’t until I started living there and listening to Croatian constantly that I started to pick up more vocabulary. ( I was taught all the swear words first 😉.)In the Army there was one German-Croatian who hardly spoke any but the others filled in the gaps and he was able to figure out what was being said. When you saw everyone doing push-ups it wasn’t hard to figure out that you had to do them as well. My biggest problem was some technical military terms I never heard before but the other guys explained it to me in English. That was almost 30 years ago today I am sure everyone knows some English today. A friend is in the regular army and since Croatia entered NATO he said almost everyone has some basic knowledge of English so as to be able to communicate with others NATO troops. The guys in my unit encouraged me to ask lots of questions during class time using bad grammar and mixing English and Croatian so they could all have a good laugh at our instructors face when I would raise my hand. I was happy to oblige.😁 Like I said before it was a positive experience and I am glad that I did it.

      @nickynamey1639 Look. I lived in Bulgaria when it was under the Soviet Union, and we had to do 2 years of service, and this hardly went for many of the recruits. The problem in those countries is the mindset of society that if you haven't served, you're not a man! This definitely won't install any patriotic thoughts in the youths. Bulgaria currently faces a demographic crisis, and in several years, there would hardly be any young people in the villages, which I presume also counts for Croatia. It won't install anything. It'll just give excuses for some guys with huge ego torment those who they think are low.

    Hello I just came across your channel and have a question regarding health insurance in Croatia which you probably answered a hundred times already. My wife and me both have Croatian citizenship but live in Canada and would like to semi retire in Croatia for 5 months a year. The cost of Canadian travel health insurance for long stays away is crazy expensive especially when you are older. What options are there in Croatia for government or private health insurance and any idea of the cost per month?

    • @ExpatinCroatia
      @ExpatinCroatia 2 місяці тому

      Hey Nicky! Happy to found us! Private health insurance costs can vary depending on what you want covered. You could go with a travel policy for emergencies through a Croatian company, then just pay out of pocket for doctor's appointments and medications as they are very reasonable. A private family doctor visit is about 50euro, a specialist is 60 to 80euro. Most meds don't cost more than 20euros, but of course, it depends. Signing up for government health insurance could be tough. You'll first have to get a Croatian national ID with a Croatian address on it, which is much harder these days for Croatian citizens from abroad. Usually, the police will want proof that you are permanently relocating to the country. If you manage to get the ID, then you'll have to pay either ~90euros per month, OR 16,5% of your monthly net income (worldwide) with a ceiling of 210euros per month. To register for the first time, you must pay back payment for a year as an investment in the system since you have not yet contributed. Thanks for the question!

      @@ExpatinCroatia thanks for the reply. We were going to try living there 5 months a year then if things went Ok then make the jump to permanent if the tax hit isn’t too big. My wife grew up there before moving in her early 30’s and I lived there for almost 5 years in the mid 1990’s so we are aware of the situation with yearly visits. Is the 16.5 % you mentioned part of the tax on Social Security I would receive or would it include withdrawals from 401k and or IRA? The 210€ seems like a bargain compared to some quotes I saw for travel medical insurance Thanks

      The 16,5% isn't a tax, it's the percentage used to calculate health care contributes for those with non-Croatian income.

    I remember when I was a kid Solin and Kastela were part of the Split so there was around 250.000 population. Wiki: Split 160,577 Population [2021]

      Hey Ines! Ah, interesting! Kastela is now 40K, Solin is about 24K, then with Split at 160K-ish, not a huge difference over the years, it seems.

    Lovely hotel room! I, too, am not fond of this oppressive heat and humidity. Hopefully it's not as long-term as forecast. Ugh. Thank you for sharing valuable information, as always.

      Hey hey hey! Yeah, this weather is pretty rough. Keeping my fingers crossed for a little rain just to cool things down a little. I saw a guy on the tram with an umbrella today. Wishful thinking, maybe?? Thanks for watching, as always. :)

      @ExpatinCroatia We had such beautiful rains in the spring but the porous ground is bacon (hamburger!) crisp now. I'm paranoid about forest/wild fires...several years ago our wee village was evacuated. Fire bombers and firefighters thankfully saved our homes but the fire was only 10 meters from our property. But there is exactly zero we can do about the weather. Maybe the umbrella guy knows something we don't. ;) Probably sheltering himself from heat. Or a sociology experiment. ;)

    Is this info is true ??? Its on mup site I living here with work permit The time required for granting long-term residence does not include: stay on the basis of an issued stay and work permit for seasonal workers stay on the basis of an issued stay and work permit for service providers temporary stay granted to posted workers stay on the basis of an issued stay and work permit for volunteers stay on the basis of an issued stay and work permit for trainees stay on the basis of an issued stay and work permit for intra-corporate transferees and their family members stay on the basis of an issued stay and work permit for other essential personnel, as defined by the Protocol of Accession of the Republic of Croatia to the Marrakesh Agreement establishing the World Trade Organisation, as well as their family members stay on the basis of an issued stay and work permit for frontier workers ------

      @ExpatinCroatia 2 місяці тому

      Thank you for the question! Yes, that is still true. If you are a regular work and residence permit (for example, 1 year contracts), then it counts towards long-term residence. Those work permits you listed are special situations and do not count towards long-term residence.

    Q: When you register your residence, what does the government do with your data? A: The data is collected so that the Croatian government can track who is in the country and where they are. It is used in case of an emergency, if you must be summoned to court as a witness and if the government needs to contact you for something. This info is maintained by the Ministry of the Interior. It is carried out under the conditions prescribed by the law regulating the protection of personal data. They are obliged to provide data on residence at the request of state bodies, legal entities and citizens who have a primary interest. We have found nothing to support that this system notifies anyone’s home country. And frankly, that seems like an extra step that they wouldn’t take of their own decision. However, if another state or government body requests this information, they will provide the information. Croatia is part of EES, which is an IT system for external Schengen borders, which does support the sharing of Schengen-related information with other members.

    Q: How can I register a boat?

A: You can register a boat through e-gradani, through email, in person at a harbor master’s office or by mail. Documents vary depending on whether it is a newly built boat, or existing boat. New boats do not require a technical inspection before registration.

    Q: Is it legal to live in your car?

A: It is illegal to sleep in a car or camp outside of a camping zone or camping park, even on your own land if it is not designated as a camp. Fines are from 200 to 1,300 euros, approximately. Aside from this, everyone must register an address with the police, which is not possible if you’re living in a car.
