Ignoring the fact that the Patrick Show recently made a gag poking jab at beanmouth cartoons, what was the connection between Mighty Mouse and Spongebob that had people compare the two like this before that Patrick Show episode even air? This is the 2nd comment ive seen so far that made an eerily spot-on prediction of that happening...

I love that this scene was poking fun at the fact that cartoons around the 80s were starting to be more action pack and more animated and less cheap and limited like the ones from the 1960s to 1970s (Like Hanna Barbera for example).

This is why *Velma* was inevitable, and why the haters only make me love it more. John K. is a terrible person, but his parody of this franchise and everything it did to hold back the potential of western animation in a post-Walt Disney, post-Termite Terrace world is on point.

@@Attmay This episode was actually from AFTER John Kricfalusi left the show. Funny enough, "Velma" may as well be the Scooby-Doo franchise's equivalent to "Ren & Stimpy Adult Party Cartoon".

The funny thing is Macross started out as a parody in pre-production before it was reeled in a bit and they took the concept seriously. But yeah, it wasn't supposed to be a knee-slapper. If he had any credibility left, I bet John K would have loved Panty and Stocking.

Well Real GB had great writing in the first 2 seasons and got an emmy nomination for a few episodes. Real Station Identification was a great episode that mocked TV shows even He-Man since J Michael Stracsynzki didn't like writing 3 He-man episodes and put it on the commentary of the DVD of the episode and how toy driven some cartoon shows back then were. And not all anime is bad! Bakshi praised Akira back in 1990.

Yeah, their frame of reference was Robotech, one of the first real, successful examples of dramatic writing in animation that the West got (this was before we got damn near everything imported via Crunchyroll and Netflix mind you) as well as the Real Ghostbusters for being a toy advertising tie-in, which Bahski hated. The idea of animation being something dramatic and mostly action based was just wrong to him, and yes, this is the guy who made the godawful rotoscoped Lord of the Rings, so you tell me if it's hypocritical.

What did you expected something from John. K and his a**hole friends ? Not having ONE jab at something that they hate ?

Feh, I say ANIMANIACS-- which John K. also hated-- did it better in "Back In Style". Although tossing a Speed Buggy expy and a girl from the Chan Clan into the mix was pretty amusing.

@@smokingcatcomicscollectibl2131 I think they equally did a fun job parodying Scooby-Doo and other limited animation TV cartoons. Of course, Tom Minton, who wrote "Back in Style," was also a co-writer on "Don't Touch That Dial" here, and it shows.

@@Kemdizzle. it was almost an article of faith that they were unsuitable for anybody of double digit age to watch. This show was a huge part of the reason for that perception. This, *Velma,* and the *Family Guy* cutaway of those meddling kids finding a dead body are the only good things to come from this wretched franchise. Now, I'm going to say a little prayer for Matthew Lillard's career.

thecooooolcat This was done before that. This was time most animated shows were homogenized with all the toy based shows, shows based on celebrities and rehashed versions of older shows toned to be "family friendly". Those shows sucked out all of the classic Warner Bros and Famous Paramount cartoons, even Garfield made fun of that stuff with the Buddy Bears. I also heard John K had a strong dislike for DIC and claimed that Shrek was influenced by it. If you want my opinion, I got nothing against Ghostbusters, sure it tried to a smart show and a cheap movie tie in, but it had stories based on actual legends and famouos ghosts, it even paved the way for Extreme Ghostbusters that was awesome. Also, I believe most shows that came out in the 2000s especially the adult ones sort of sucked out the varieties of humor mainly because they were trying to be South Park, Family Guy or the Simpsons. But that doesn't mean American animation was or is dry, there has been diversity, there were always good animated shows coming here and there. Homogenization and political correctness and parents groups in my opinion have always hindered something good in animation, mainly because, well I guess I don't have to tell you that, we all know why.

TheRennes1997 Anime popularity was growing in the '80s with Robotech, Voltron, Speed Racer, Akira, and the anime influenced Transformers, also manga like Lone Wolf and Cub and Frank Miller's manga influenced Ronin. Frank Miller explained, "Through a girlfriend Laurie Sutton, I discovered the Japanese comics. That all gave birth to Ronin." In the '80s there were also the cartoons made just to sell toys like the Smurfs, He-Man, Care Bears, GI Joe, Transformers, etc. Now there are the "adult" cartoon shows like Family Guy trying to follow The Simpsons success along with the South Park type hateful bullying immorality. Ralph Bakshi/John K's Mighty Mouse and Ren & Stimpy Show were inspired by the Tex Avery/Bob Clampett style slapstick humor but they were banned due to censors, yet crude tasteless shows like Beavis and Butthead, South Park, Drawn Together, etc. were aired, Bruce Timm's Batman: The Animated Series was inspired by the Fleischer Superman cartoons of the '40s, but now the superhero cartoons are conforming to the anime popularity style.

thecooooolcat Well, yeah, but from what I heard John K and Ralph Bakshi had other problems than content. Though I don't blame them, I heard things were tough with them behind the scenes. Yeah some networks were fickle, and it seems today they still are.

TheRennes1997 John K explained that Mighty Mouse was canceled by spineless CBS because a Donald Wildmon, head of the American Family Association, accused the show of having Mighty Mouse snorting the narcotic cocaine, which was actually the remains of a flower that had been crushed, Mighty Mouse smells and accidentally inhales the flower, which is a slapstick sight gag. John K was fired by soulless Viacom/Nickelodeon from his own creation, The Ren & Stimpy Show, for having Ren the chihuahua hit George Liquor with an oar, which is a slapstick sight gag. Networks are humorless hypocrites and the enemies of creative art.

Disappointed that none of these guys (except for like one person) worked for SpongeBob.
