I'm in a band, so a lot of my practice consists of trying to simulate performing with the band as accurately as I can. I play along with recordings - sing while I play etc. This involves a decent amount of technique practice of course, and practice raw technique too, but in my experience there's a world of difference between learning something, and knowing it well enough to have it at your fingertips live.
Very much so, it requires mental memory and muscle memory, which requires a lot of repetition. Thanks for having a look at the video.
Warmoth will make you a custom pickguard with just the two tone pot holes. Go with a volume and tone.
I'm gonna check it out, thank you
The best bands I've been in had players who had either already put in a lot of time on their instrument by themselves. The worst is band members who play only at band rehearsals, can't remember anything, and use practice to get drunk away from the old lady.
Yeah, I've been in bands with those guys too. Show up with a bag of weed and a 6 pack
Seems like pentatonic scales and licks are all to often the focus for people. I’ve gotten interested in diatonic scales and theory. There is a whole world of music totally overlooked by most; so many more notes.
Hands up, I'm one of those guys!
20 year player here. Gigged a few years, so I was always learning songs. But I never learned theory, etc. then I stopped gigging and not long after learned I had a huge brain tumor that got removed. It was almost like hitting the re-set button after the surgery with regards to everything. I had to take balance and speech therapy for a year. When both therapists learned I played guitar, both of them begged me to get right back to playing - and I did. A few years later, I had to get a few more tumors removed but with radiation instead of surgery so those weren't as bad, but memory loss was a side effect. I try to learn songs when I can, but I also noodle just to keep things in the memory banks because now retaining that info is harder. Either way, I'm not stopping and as long as I'm playing something, anything, I'm happy.
You nailed it... 30 yrs of playing, I loved the idea of strats but everyone I played? I turned the volume down in the middle of songs! Yes I could have customized it. But at the price and then single coil pickups? Now you need a stacked humbucker or cut up the guitar. Thanks great video! I don't buy or play Strats...
Everyone who succeeds has failed, but kept going.
Cool Vibe.
Thank you for the kind words, and watching the video.
Pretty cool topic, now practice instead of making videos. Then make more videos, because this channel is great!!
Preach brother.
Amen!
It's soul crushing to see people half assing it and lowing past you. Sad reality of life let alone being involved in music scenes.
It is, there are times I wanted to stop because of that
That guitar looks really good, the color stands out. As forbthe video content, i feel people who lean towards the arts have fragile egos.
I guess it hides sloppy playing.
It does that. Lol
I practice and play a lot. Played paying solo acoustic gigs for years. Guitar, harmonica, vocals. Now in a band. Still practicing a lot. Know lots of songs. Pretty decent entertainer, but despite countless hours of practice I’m still a lousy musician. I think partly because I got a late start with music. Didn’t start music/guitar until twenty years old.
Routines make you good at those routines. Once you're capable you should be improvising to backing tracks. Improvising is how you become a fluent player. Learn your theory and incorporate that into your improv. Make up musical ideas and work on those. Use your ear more than your eyes and your ideas of physical patterns and structures.
@@truescotsman4103 This is really great advice! Thank you for sharing it with us.
I took some beginner lessons when I was in third grade. Bought a guitar when I was in my early twenties (51 now) and started learning songs. Ended up playing the bar scene for a little while in an acoustic duet. But it's always been a hobby. I never dedicated the time to learn the theory, but instead learned and memorized each song. As a result, I cannot improvise a lead to save my life! Not to mention keys in general. I've wanted to find someone like your instructor that forced you to learn the basics. I actually paid for lessons 8 or 10 years ago looking to be guided through that process, but the guy wanted to just teach me new songs each session. Anyway, enjoyed the video!
@@davejr72 this seems to be a trend, learning songs that is. My Ex-wife worked at a lesson studio, they had an instructor there who graduated from Berkeley school of music, he started students off with this is your E string. He had a student studying with him for a month when the kids dad asked him to play a song at a back yard BBQ the kid said I'm not there yet, the father was furious and went to the owner of the studio and complained about the instructor, leading to the guy actually losing his job, all the other teachers were then informed to start teaching songs from day one. Thanks for sharing your story.
Thanks for your honest review ! Would you consider discussing some of your other guitars ?
There's not a lot to discuss 😔 so many have gotten away over the years. But thanks for going back almost a year ago and watching the video.
A practiced extensively for years when I was younger. Now I enjoy just dicking around.
@@seric4546 It's a lot more fun. Thanks for watching the video.
I practice by learning songs with Ultimate guitar/Guitar Pro... looping, slowing things down... keep going till you can't do it wrong.
For years I was told, keep going till you get it right...the problem with that is once you do you stop there, if you just keep going with repetition it becomes second nature and you have the confidence to use it anytime you need it. Thanks for the view.
Another great video! In both my professional life and my musical life, I know that I'm not the boss type. I'm happy to do 110% at a support role, but I don't want to be the boss. At the band reunion that I mentioned in the comments to another video, our leader (starting when the high school band originated in the '70s) wasn't able to attend. It made a huge difference as we we weren't sure who the leader was (I noticed it, but I'm not sure anyone else did). We made it through, but it wasn't the same. A clear leader, who isn't afraid to do the "Captain sh*t", is important!
When you have a clear leader, things seem organized and the pressure is directed in one direction.
Great video! Reminds me of a guest column that "Bass Goddess" Greta Brinkman did in Bass Player Magazine where she talked about being professional with no monitors, blown monitors and monitors on fire where the musicians need to press on regardless. I played a show with my high school bandmates in 2023 where the sound guy said that he wasn't going to put the guitars through the monitors. Me, having minimal gig experience, didn't object. Our set up had me, as the bassist and guitarist (for a member that couldn't attend due to health issues), standing 20 feet behind the guitarists. It was fine until one song (China Grove) where I was playing guitar. As the song reached the guitar solo, which I played, the rhythm guitarist started playing. I needed to hear him to know when to come it. I could see his strumming arm moving, but couldn't hear him. Needless to say, I came in late, but picked it up midway. Still haunts me to this day. Also reminds me of the time I ran sound, with my PA (that I didn't have much experience with), for a friend's band. It didn't go well and I felt horrible. They were kind, and forgiving, but it killed me that I let them down. Running sound is very much a developed skill.
It's your reputation that your selling people when booking your band, if you're known as unprofessional, and hard to work with you won't get booked.
I guess it's an individual thing, Strat Volume knob hasn't never gotten in my way.
@@TeleCaster66 from the responses I'm seeing here it definitely is.
I am only a house guitarist (well basement bathroom actually..) but have played guitar for more than 30 years. I do not practice for something special, a long term goal. But I go trough faces in my playing. Fingerpicking, improv, bluegrass, scales, triads..etc. And try to learn as much as possible while having fun. And then all these melt together and I go trough periods of fast improvement before leveling off until a new things comes along. Playing the guitar is so much fun but I need something new to focus on all the time.
That's awesome, to be so engaged with the instrument for the sheer love of it. Just to improve your playing for yourself. The fact that you've been doing it for 30 years speaks volumes for your love of guitar,👏👏👏

I definitely have issues with authority. 😂 I always want to boss everybody around, that is, till fists start flying or the cops show up. What’s really cool is you’re willing to share these awkwark issues that all bands seem to have but the kids dreaming of standing behind the mic with a guitar hanging over their nuts, never dream is what they’ll be dealing with onstage.
Gigs generally come with some stress, Mike Ness of. social Distortion once said about gigs" it's 22 hours of BS for 2 hours of fun" it's work sometimes to get through the gigs.
I thought Larry quit drinking.

Are we "all" ADHD or just the *victims* of decades of TV, marketing and interwebs??? That @#$% *ruins* our concentration and pleasure uptake cycle in a very bad way. Thus, we need less and less quality information, while needing more and more meaningless dopamine. Shrinks, Epistemologists & Educators agree.
So .I've read this comment at least a half dozen times, I think there is a little from both arguments. I think some people do suffer from chemical imbalances, My generation spent as much time outside as we could, we rode our bikes everywhere, played a ton of softball, and climbed anything we could. But I do agree, we are victims of our phones, iPads and tablets and so on, leaving us the challenge to stay away from checking out our FB, YT, Tic Tok, and Insta's. It's a great point and I've been thinking about it a lot. Maybe we should be turning our brains off to everything else that's not the task we have in front of us.
@@mediocrecoverbandguitarguy2416 Former CogSci major here, Sir. They have yet to *ever* find any evidence of that "chemical imbalance". It *is* selling a whole lotta drugs tho. GL.
I've never had a problem with it.
@@davidbarlow431 and millions of players have not, I've been working around it, I played a gig Saturday night, I used that guitar all night and the best part was I didn't have to tune much. Thanks for watching.
I did what many have already mentioned, moved everything down so it’s hole, vol and tone.Feels much more relaxed.
I practice a lot and I still suck so practice is probably overrated
Hahahah
im also mostly self taught aside from two years with two different teachers when i started in my teens. i wasted 10 years just noodling and playing in jam bands with very rudimentary songs. through youtube but also experience i realised how you practice properly. which is chunking things and focusing on the part of the song you have down instead of the parts that come easy to you because that makes you feel good. i even have occasional periods where i get very organised and suddenly progress noticably. BUT. when you talked about ADHD i saw myself in that. staying focussed on the task at hand is hard for me. and after a week or two when i feel the progress happen i usually start to feel great about it and already forgot how i got there and get back to noodling. it'S and endless cycle. i have a bunch of practice plans on my phone and pc. but i always forget i have them. simple very short lists of things to work on. usually very small details i nee to play a certain lick or chord progression. simple as just practicing going from the chord before the chord i struggle with to the problem one and back. what i practice mostly is filling in the gaps on the fretboard with scales, chords/triads and their inversions. and when i find a cool voicing i usaully try to find a context to use it. i really nee to find a band again. i have a lot of soudns in my head but i'm really bad at writing stuff on my own. i thrive doing it with other people though
My focus is really bad, I'm a bit better in the morning after coffee and before I go to work, if I wait till later at night I'm useless. People think I'm joking but I'm not!! Thanks for watching the video.
I practiced for hours every day for the first couple of years, then realised that being in a band with my friends meant no matter how well I played, or any of us played, we were only as good as the band as a whole. 40+ years later I still learn songs, but I don’t practice as such.
I feel like that's where I'm kind of at. Thanks for watching the video
i do an hour at noon and an hour at midnite..on non gig days…after 4 decades of playing i feel that 2 hrs is really just maintainance. if im recording or getting ready for something good itll be way more. at first i tell my students to break it down in 15 min blocks..pick a topic you want to develop and go hard. rotate around a few diff ones during the week and keep a practice journal each day.. focus on the small things because the big things are just a combination of the small stuff. as you become more fluent it gets easier and the mind becomes more limber..keep swingin that ax!!
@@mattmasonoklahoma that's great advice, I think you might be the only music educator who has commented here so that's awesome!
@@mediocrecoverbandguitarguy2416 another good one i learned as a youth enrolled in the Suzuki violin method was..”Practice only on the days you eat..”
I sometimes just noodle , but I also try and learn newer songs I want to learn plus work on older songs I know. I add in some new scales and you tube lessons as well. I just started reading a great book about practicing for musicians called The Musician's Way by Gerald Klickstein, it was recommended on another you tube channel , it has lots of good pointers in it . Good video subject.
I think that's something I do as well, I'm definitely going to look into that book as well. Thanks for mentioning it, and taking a look at the video.
I work on improvising, take what I've learned and how to apply it to my own playing. And then I dick around for an hour!😂
Sounds close to what I do, thank you for watching the video.
I practiced guitar/drums obsessively from about age 14 to 21. Hours and hours per day, metronome, songs, theory, chops building stuff. Then I went through some pretty crappy years while in my 20s but still played in bands and gigged a lot, but didn't practice much. Took 7 years off from gigging but still noodled here and there. Then in 2022 at age 36 I got sober and within a few months felt that same drive to practice I had in my teenage years. I'm back to putting in at least an hour per day (full time job, part time gigging, no kids lol) with a metronome and backing tracks for improv and I've gotten so much out of it in the last two years. It's frustrating to think where I'd be if I hadn't lost so many years, but that's life. Love the videos man. Love being a working class musician.
I wish I did have that drive, I love playing but I always feel like I didn't get anywhere when I put the guitar down. I'm glad you found that again, thank you so much for sharing your story, I hope all stays well for you and that drive stays inside of you. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch the video.
If I hear something that might interest me I try to figure it out, but not to sit down with sheet music and learn licks. I mean bass only has 4 four strings, how much is there to learn!
Hahah, yeah but you're pretty smooth on those 4 strings!
