Here I am, wk 1
Moses didn’t know quite what he was getting into when he responded “Here I am” to God calling from the burning bush. Moses’ roots were complicated and, frankly, a little sketchy. Yet God invited, guided, and empowered Moses, even when Moses felt he wasn’t adequate for the task. Might Moses - and we - find life through God’s calling, even amidst fear and uncertainty?

As we come to the end of our Named and Unnamed series, we encounter several more women who are introduced as part of Paul's journeys. One is Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth, who is included in a gathering of women and is the leader of her household. Another is an unnamed and enslaved young woman, whose spirit-inspired proclamation of Paul and company's identity annoys him enough to perform an e...

Our third and final "Mary" this month is Mary Magdalene. Her character carries a long and challenging narrative in much of the Christian tradition, but is there more to understand about her role in the gospel accounts? She was present at the cross and the resurrection in all four gospels, but we will focus on the Lukan insight into Mary Magdalene as we draw near to the end of our "Named and Unn...

This week we will become more acquainted with a second "Mary," the sister of Martha and Lazarus. In John 12, we read that she anoints Jesus' feet with extremely expensive perfume and wipes his feet dry with her hair. This demonstration of abundance and extravagance says a lot about Mary ... and also a lot about Jesus. What might it have to say about, and to, us?

As we continue in our "Named and Unnamed" summer series, this week we begin a three-week miniseries: "Mary, Mary, Mary." Perhaps the most well-known Mary in the Bible is the mother of Jesus. But in the Gospel of John, she is not named, and the birth of Jesus is not described in John, as it is in Matthew and Luke. Is it possible that John uses the mother of Jesus to tell a different kind of nati...

We inhabit a world that often glorifies power, praises the rich, and honors the independent. God calls us to a different way of living: one that honors creative approaches to dispelling violence, one that encourages us to welcome all people, and one that calls us to compassionate living. This week we will be challenged into this new way of living through the example of five courageous women.

When Mary was visited by the angel Gabriel and was told she would give birth to the called "Son of God," Gabriel also told her that her relative Elizabeth was also expecting a promised child. Mary hurried to be with Elizabeth and stayed with her for three months. What support were they for each other, and to whom do we turn for help in realizing God's promise for us?

Considering the stories of named and unnamed women in the Bible also suggests that we need to consider the instructions that are given to and about those women. And so we find ourselves confronted with one of the most challenging scriptures for many: 1 Timothy 2:8-15. What did this text mean for the named and unnamed women (and men) of the early Christian church? What does this text mean for wo...

This is EXTREMELY WELL DONE!! Its true that YOUNG EARTH CREATIONISM (YEC) is vastly more likely to be FALSE than to be TRUE but that has no bearing on the existence of God or the mission of Jesus Christ as the Savior sent by God!! The Earth is most definitely ancient, and simply observing EROSION of mountains and geologic features will tell you that. Observing the Hawaiian Islands gets you about 80 million years!! The BIGGEST PROBLEMS with YEC is the fact they declare there is more than ONE kind of Science and they created their own JOURNAL and Science club and they declared the Science I practice and was taught is "secular " Science. This is blatently a LIE and they shouldn't get away with that. Science is a METHODOLOGY and works by applying a series of steps to understanding natural processes. By starting their own branch of Science they do not have to get their information or results PEER-REVIEWED by competant Scientists in the FIELD and I can tell you that makes them LIERS and CHEATERS. If they have the actual TRUTH let them compete in the established SCIENCE FIELDS and regular meetings and journals. The other mistake they make as YOUNG EARTH CREATIONISTS is to declare Science is a WORLDVIEW. Scientists have Worldviews but athiests practices the same METHODOLOGY of Science as Christians do. I think they are confusing Scientific Materialism with actual Science and the Scientific Method!! God Bless!!

Explain the chixalub impact. U realise yellowstone erupted more than a dozen times... Think if all that happened in 150 days. Forget the flood. The water would be toxic acidic and boiling. Dinos as far as southern canada are buried in something called impact glass. Basically they had molten glass rain down on them... Theres also 3 other super volcanoes in america 7 active on planet many more extinct all with many eruption. Limestone when forming produces heat Lots of heat. Nuclear level. Sry but Young earth isnt rationally viable. Jewish moimodes rabbinic jew a physician of the 1500s. Science wont conflict If it does either its wrong or the view of torah (understanding wron) Jewish rabbis were predicting the universe was billions. And that there had been previous destroyed worlds. The patristic fathers read it allegorical Sry but i could debunk u all night😊

Seriously? Is your INDOCTRINATION that complete? Look this was an excellent discussion of what's wrong with YOUNG EARTH CREATIONISM and it's worth listening to very carefully and with an open mind. I am a dyed-in-the-wool Christian follower of Jesus Christ and I gave my heart and soul to Jesus as a young man. I've always been a very gifted student, especially in the Sciences and Mathematics. When I graduated from high school I had received a very good scholarship to attend Whitworth College in FALL of 1978. Just a few days after graduation I was riding with my best friend traveling to the local Mall and we drive on a highway about 65 mph in a very fast Cougar with a souped up engine. A driver pulled into our passing lane just as my friend accelerated FAST around the vehicle in front of us and my friend reached 85 mph and my friend had to hit the break as someone pulled into the same lane we were passing in! We spun out of control and hit the guardrail and bounced at a right angle to the highway we were traveling on and we flew off the right-hand guardrail up into the air like the DUKES OF HAZARD! It was about a 20 feet embankment almost straight down in soft gravel and we landed almost PERFECTLY and made a rapid stop without rolling the car or hitting anything!! We were unhurt and walked away as the car landed so flush it didn't roll like it would have if we jumped over the embankment at almost ANY other angle than perpendicular to it! I calculated the odds to be 1 part in a thousand to a few parts in 10,000 that we jumped at an angle to the embankment and that would have caused a rollover down the steep embankment and a crushing of the roof down on our heads and certain death. We didn't have a seat beat on eirher!! I believe God spared me for a reason and I teach now at a Christian high school. I measured nuclear weapons as a National Laboratory Scientist and I completed my PhD coursework in Physics at Purdue University! THE EARTH is indeed 4.5 Billion years old and even if you toss out all the radiometric dating, other measuring techniques provide the same dates and you just need to look at erosion to tell the Planet is ancient. I teach EARTH Science and the Matterhorn has small sea shelled creatures in the rocks at the top of the mountain!! Also the World didn't experience a Worldwide flood the evidence is clear on that!! No one understands all of God's Scripture and I'm OK with that I don't have to pretend I am smart enough to know what's word for word correct and what's fictional stories told to teach a moral or spiritual lesson. That's OK we don't need to understand everything to worship God and be thankful for Jesus Christ his son sent to die on the Cross for our Sins!! Amen to that??

@YECBIB What happens to your FAITH if it turns out YOUNG EARTH CREATIONISM is simply a FANATICAL WORLDVIEW built on lies? Let me clearly DEBUNK a 6000 year old Earth age for you. There are TREES older than your age of the Earth for starters. Next look at the Hawaiian islands. The island chain is a snap shot of EROSION SEQUENCES. The BIG ISLAND (Hawaii) is about 750,000 years old and they get progressively older and more eroded until Kauai that is 4.5 Million years old. Hawaii has two large peaks that are around 14000 feet above the ocean as snow, rain, and wind erosion hasn't yet reduced them but Kauai peak is about 5600 feet high because it's 4.5 million years old. Thr islands continue Below the Ocean north and westward until there is a small pile of lava rocks about 80 million years old. You can date the islands by looking for a gas that builds up in solidified lava rocks. Another dating method is even simpler, look at the distance between thr islands in INCHES and divide by about 3.5 inches per year. The Pacfic Tectonic Plate moves slowly across the ocean and you can date the islands that way as well and GUESS WHAT, IT AGREES WITH YOUR OTHER METHOD of measuring the gas buildup in LAVA ROCKS. Listen it's OK if the Earth isn't 6000 year old. Jesus is still Jesus and God is still God!! Look they thought the Sun rotated around the Earth also until that was proven false by Science!! God is the God of Sciece you will be OK I ASSURE YOU!!

I met Lavonne on April 1st, 2012, and it wasn't just some April Fools' Day joke. As an amazing host, she graciously welcomed me to spend five weeks of my life with her in a lovely house on Shybrook Court while I conducted research on the Amish. Those five weeks left an unforgettable mark on my life. Though brief, they were filled with memorable moments. I'll always remember Lavonne as the sweetest, most optimistic, and courageous woman I've ever encountered-I aspire to emulate her. Listening to her family members' speeches felt oddly familiar. Lavonne introduced me to Lynn and her charming family. Lavonne even took me to Chloe's graduation, granting me a firsthand glimpse into a quintessential aspect of American education. Upon seeing her grandson's Jordie's photo on her fridge, we discovered a striking resemblance from our childhoods-both of us had red hair. Lavonne and I celebrated Easter together, and she graciously invited me to the feett-washing ceremony, another special event ran by her church. I fell in love with her small garden, where she generously allowed me to use her homegrown kale for my meals. Her curiosity and openness to new ideas were evident when she suggested buying Bull's tomato plants at the garden center during our next visit. I vividly recall the day she encouraged me to attend an ex-Amish reunion in Indiana, despite my initial hesitation. The journey seemed daunting, especially being so far away by European standards, and knowing no one there. Lavonne assured me that the ex-Amish were kind people, and she was absolutely right. Upon my return to E-town, we bonded over making a popular Amish dish, the Shoofly pie. Those five weeks were pivotal in my life, thanks to Lavonne's boundless enthusiasm and positive energy. She truly is an inspiration. I often reflect on two of her favorite quotes, which I strive to incorporate into my daily life: "Let's take one day at a time," a mantra particularly useful during the brave endeavor of hosting people from around the world, and "Plant seeds of hope," a sentiment symbolized by the faceless Amish doll she gifted me as a souvenir. Thank you for everything, Lavonne. You will be deeply missed. Maja, Slovenia

Dear Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren, thanks for making this lively and clear presentation available online. Have you given any thought to why Esther, in chapter 4, was justifiably hesitant to take Mordecai's second message (about Haman vs. the Jews) to Ahasuerus, but did not hesitate at all in chapter 2, regarding taking Mordecai's first message (about Bigthan and Teresh) to Ahasuerus? Since the laws of Persia were not easily changed (8:8), it would seem that either of these interruptions to Ahasuerus' schedule could have resulted in her being executed. (I think I can explain this, but I'd like to know your thoughts.)
