    Thank you!! It might be helpful to have the tab for the exercise, just to be sure I’m playing it correctly. For example, I thought that you were using your second finger as well until you brought up the Natural Minor scale. Just a suggestion…!

    • @IMDguitar
      @IMDguitar 10 днів тому

      Hi, the tablature is provided at the start of the exercise video close-up. It might be hard to see on small devices and would need people to pause the video and maybe zoom in. In longer videos I do provide separate tab; diagrams etc. and I give a spoken 'walk-through' of everything necessary. However, my main concern with these mini-exercises is to keep the videos short. (Apart from anything else it does mean that I can produce more of them!). I'm still learning though and trying to adapt all my teaching to this online method...thank you so much for taking the time to comment. It is much appreciated and will help me improve ;)

      Ok, point taken... so thank you for commenting. Unlike with private teaching, where each student is sitting in front of me, I don't have an idea as to the knowledge of each individual student on UA-cam. In these videos I provide the tablature so that people (who read tablature) can pause and use that to know exactly what I am doing. I could explain verbally (as I do in other videos) but that would increase the length of the video considerably...and these are meant to be quick videos. Hopefully you understand my reasoning. Thank you again for commenting (it is appreciated!) and I'll consider the length of future videos...I may well add instruction!

    Vai’s business acumen is commensurate with his playing and composing skills. He’s a brand and therefore will work within the confines of that. If you watch any documentary you’ll see that most if not all of his decisions are based on business.

      Yes, in the absence of any evidence to the contrary, I suspect that Steve Vai is good at whatever he turns his hand to. I guess my main point of concern is that creativity (along with all its benefits) is in danger of being swallowed by commercialism. Steve Vai is not the best example (!) but many musicians these days do start with the intention of sharing their creativity with as many people as possible, but end up only being accessible to the rich. … Thank you for commenting! For musicians it usually starts with a desire to have people hear your music. Sadly, the better you get, the more the 'industry' gets involved until there is a danger that only the elite (rich) can afford to hear your music! That said, I don't think Steve Vai is guilty of that..he is a great musician and seems like a decent guy. I now, subscribed to Norm's Rare Guitar's. Because expensive vintage guitars come and go? Not quite. Michael Lemmo's playing is on point. No matter what he plays, it sounds good, in low volumes, he just plays very well, so pleasing to ear, he's even my age, 34(thought he was a bit older) with the experience... So it really comes down to the player in most cases. Go watch the Norm's Rare Guitar's Episode ''A Few Great Moments at Norman's Rare Guitars''. Amazing players, compilation, it was extremely inspiring. Didn't even pay attention what brand/model they are playing.

    I wonder how much better quality it is in comparison to my 'Geddy Lee Beautiful Book Of Bass'. A very high quality 400 page hardback book documenting Geddy's extensive collection of guitars and basses which I picked up for £22 on Amazon when it was launched. I was expecting the Vai book to be similar money but obviously uplifted to reflect the number of pages. So £50-£60 which would have been a nice Christmas present, certainly under £100. Steve Vai posted a link to the book website a few days ago on Facebook - the comments largely reflected my thoughts. It's a shame but even the cheapest is too much for a coffee table book when I could spend it on a Vega trem, a Fender neck for one of my parts casters or a nice pedal, or some lessons - things that I'd actually find useful and rewarding

    • @IMDguitar
      @IMDguitar Місяць тому

      I suspect that it is very good quality, and obviously aimed at the collector's market, but I agree that some guitarists may be better served with 'tools of the trade' for the money (!) It does worry me more when musicians (not Steve Vai) inflate ticket prices to the extent that it becomes a spectator sport for the elite...and only the elite! All musicians start off simply wanting their music to be heard. I think the industry itself accentuates the desire for money. ... Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. Yeah but the RRP listed at £65 on Amazon for the Geddy Lee book and if it were released today it would probably be sitting at £100 as everything costs A LOT more nowadays (esp. physical products) than 5-7 years ago. When you consider the Vai book is 2-volumes/1000 pages, it doesn't really seem that overpriced by today's standards.

    People misunderstand the purpose of this book. Steve was approached by Rufus to do a book on his guitars, Mike Mesker did the years of work of researching their history, tracking them down, and photographing them. And then designing the whole thing. Look at other books sold by this publisher. For this genre of highest possible quality, enormous ‘more art than picture book’ type piece, this price is right in the ballpark of other books. It just seems the average guitar player isn’t familiar with this genre of media and wasn’t expecting this level of quality. It takes a special type of nerd to be into this sort of thing and those people who would be interested in a book of the guitars, are going to want the most detailed history, specs and pictures. If this were a $50 average sized picture book from Barnes and noble, I would have been disappointed. I don’t think there’s any world in which enthusiasm and enjoying this topic reflects on your playing at all. I bought the deluxe edition. For the non- nerds and collectors, they can look at the gallery on the website :)

      I agree with almost everything you say! Unfortunately, because the video was 'spontaneous', I probably didn't get my point across very well. I don't blame you at all for buying the book. I am sure that it is a good quality item that I, and many others, would enjoy owning. (I am actually jealous ;P ). I also do not blame Steve Vai for selling/endorsing the book. (I do point out in the video both that I admire Steve Vai, and that I am NOT reviewing the book). It is actually the position of music in our society that I have a slight problem with (though it doesn't keep me awake at night). Music is surrounded by an industry that buries it in commercial endeavour. There is something slightly sad in that because generations are now growing up with an escalating idea that music is merely another route towards 'celebrity' and rich reward. Time and time again I have seen great bands/musicians, with a passion for sharing their music, turn into commercial machines that play only to the elite. (Hence the reference to Oasis ticket sales - Steve Vai is actually a very poor example for reprimand)! (For disclosure - I own guitartherapy.co.uk and the philosopher.co.uk ... this should give dual hints that 1) I see music as more than an 'entertainment' and 2) that I have a deep passion for debate (!) - (neither of these websites are well constructed or maintained btw!) - thank you so much for watching the video and taking the trouble to comment. I am sure to 'rant' again, on various aspects of music etc. so it would be great if you subscribed and commented on anything you find interesting - and, on that note, I need to point out that I have not earned any money from UA-cam! I am still at the point of simply wanting to share my passion ;P .....All the best - P.S. the only thing I disagree with you on (subject to further debate) is that I believe, even in this world, 'enthusiasm' for the 'stuff' that surrounds the topic of music/guitar, can, occasionally, reflect on the 'playing'. e.g. U2 were a great band before they got 'sucked in' to the machine ;P

I'd be more concerned if he was charging this much for a standard concert ticket (the last time I saw him live last year I paid about 40 EUR). This is true and it is a very fair comment. I am sure that the book is a quality product and, quite possibly, an investment opportunity. There will always be die-hard fans, with money, who will be after such products. ...The point of this video was really to question the position of music in our society. As with many art forms, it is surrounded by a money-making industry to the extent that the real intrinsic value of music, and of playing a musical instrument, is in danger of getting lost. It soon becomes all about making money. (Musicians often start with the intention of displaying their craft to as many people as possible, and end up providing only to the elite...because that is where the money is. (I know this is all deeply philosophical...but I was an academic philosopher!) Steve via is a great musician..and I am certain he can survive my criticism (especially while I have so few subscribers...ha). I do stand by the essence of my argument in the video though! IMO it's different when to comes to collectible/limited edition products, esp. the truly well made ones. I mean the recent John Lennon Mind Games Deluxe box set is selling for £1350 but it's not like they are forcing anyone to pay that much to own the album. It's purely for the 1,000 people in the world who will see the value in it and be ok paying that much to own something very rare and unique. They are great practice instruments (they provide enough volume for that, but don't annoy anyone in another room); they can easily be plugged-in to record with (no mic needed); and they can be taken apart to fit in a small case (I take mine to schools to teach).
