Craig Goes Cycling

I'm going to do my best to document my journey through 2024. I'll be going crit racing, road racing and doing a bit of hill climbing.
A bit of background about myself: I'm currently 53, I'm a born again cyclist. At the start of 2020 I weighed 16st 12lbs/107kg. I was fat and very unfit. With the rumour that we were about to go into lockdown in March, I got worried, my only exercise was walking to and from work each day, which was a total of 2.5 miles. I had a bike in my shed, which I'd bought in April 2015 and hadn't ridden since September 2015!
I managed to get the last turbo trainer in my local Decathlon store and subscribed to Zwift. This led me down a very long rabbit hole to where I currently find myself.
I now hover around 13st 10lbs/87kg, my arthritic knees don't hurt, my asthma has cleared up and my tinnitus has reduced so much, that I barely hear it these days.
My goal this year is to move up to Cat 3 and another podium place at the Ilkeston CC Boxing Day Hill Climb.

It's the final round of the HAUS RT Crit series at Darley Moor and my last chance to gain the five points required for my Cat 3 licence.

Will I get the top five finish required for my Cat 3? Will I fail miserably? What will the plot twist be?

Hi Graham, It was a mixture of relief, excitement and disbelief.
You need to look at how others ride. It was more than obvious the lad wearing No.13 didn't know he had half his block still to use. I can't understand why he was spinning such a gear in a crit on the flat. My advice would be to get around these choppers asap as they're typically a nuisance and will either leave a gap and / or cause a crash. Point proven in this video.

Well done that man! Ive followed your journey through the season’s ups and downs. I did some Road and crit racing when I was younger but never got any points. I was the eternal 4th cat. I gave up road racing when I got married, but still did time trialling. I now just ride for fun. I’ve spent a lot of time at Darley Moor watching my son racing. He was much better than me, he got to Elite Cat and had about 15 wins over his career.
Hi Trevor, it's nice to hear that you've been following my little story. Cat 4 was so competitive this year, the amount of people who were capable of being in the top ten every race was incredible. 15 wins in elite racing is some going for your lad, those boys are fast, I get tired watching them!

@@derekfeehan no they don’t carry over. You start from zero again the following year. If it hadn’t been for my crash in the second race, I’m sure I’d have my Cat 3 license by now. I’ll get it in these final two races 🚴♂️

Great video Craig. I helped put the signs up early doors but had to leave after that so it was interesting to see how it panned out as I couldn't stop and watch or marshal. Will watch out on your channel for other races. I last raced in the late 1980's. Good luck in the next one.

Hi Craig, could i ask what the average speed was please. Not raced for over 20 years. Been cycling again now for several years and thinking about trying out the next race.
@@garryhopkins5275 hi Gary, my average was 25mph, which is about normal for. Cat 4 race. But being in a five man group, it took a lot more effort to ride at that speed than it does when the race stays together. I’d fully recommend you giving it a go again, it’s one of the best things I’ve done. If you do give it a go, let me know what you think of it 🚴♂️👍🏻
Ive not done a road race for maybe 10 years or so, but I can distinctly remember how good/fast you have to be in order to be shit at road racing....man alive, the pace is incredible! Kudos for you for having a go - maybe try some handicap racing, where (and dont take this the wrong way) the slower lads set off a bit ahead, and then groups back to the scratch group - if timed well it should all come together just in time for the last few miles. Gives you a good experience at racing in the group, through and off etc and what to do when caught by a faster moving group.
