    The nasty thing about social media is that their algorithms punish outside links because they want you on their platform only. So it's tricky trying to get people to take an extra step to find your website link. This is something people need to start consciously doing and engage with leaving the social media sites, because they've been trained to stay and just swipe.

    I got such a kick out of your website. Your little animated gifs literally brought me back to the early internet in 1999. Such wonderful memories, everything was new, amazing and had so much freedom and potential. Now everyone has been gated off for corporate control. We need to bring back webrings, forums and ways of connecting that isn't ruled over by capitalistic entities with way too much control.

  • @presquenolife
    @presquenolife 10 годин тому

    Your sentiment's right, your reasons are all over the pace. Social media doesn't force you into trends and algorithm engagement farming. Social media WANTS you to farm engagement, spend more of your time and the time of others, but you play the game of your own accord. If your goal is to get paid, you're still playing the game, website or not. Internet allowing creative people to sustain themselves in new ways is nice, but understand that it's a two sided coin. Corpo control is only one part of the problem, the culture we're cultivating is the other. Old web was very different, and what people want out of it is what changed the most. About that thing of curating out the mean comments, that's a very social media attitude. People didn't wait social media to throw shit at each other. What social media cultivates though, is finding your bubble that tells you you're right, that and tribalism. Echo chambers are never healthy.

    Hey there. That UA-cam Algorithm for whatever reason decided that I needed to see this video, so I did, and I just wanted to leave some comment here. I really loved your video, your reasoning behind this, and even your website. It's so cool and I love how you try to inspire other people to take charge. I actually was in my late teen years in the 90s, so i think round about 98 or so we had our first internet connection, and I got into all those wild things, like IRC Chat rooms, mailing lists, web forums, and... of course (anyone who was on the internet needed one) a website :) Basically just a list of hobbies I had, combined with a collection of gifs and pictures, a shoutout to my friends, and everything I could find or think of in technical gimmiks (like a "monitor quake script", etc.). Somewhere mid 00s I started using the website more like a kind of blog, but all still hand made, untill I switched to a real blog, and to twitter (when it was really new, and somewhat cool), and when no one was reading blogs anymore, because everything could be done and seen and liked on Facebook, I followed along. Today I have like 10 social media accounts, and none of them feels good. The People I cared about are not even (or hardly) using social media anymore, and the people still there are toxic, annoying, or just plain stupid. I often feel like I open those sites, only to get some information that I cannot get anywhere else (many companies nowadays only communicate through social media) but I still need to actively visit their account, because this doesn't get into my feed. But once I am there I read so much that annoys me, that I have a bad mood afterwards. But sometimes I also feel like I need to write stuff of my chest and share it somewhere - and in these moments I feel like I don't have a place to do that anymore. For the last couple of years (ever since corona I guess) I've been longing for the good old days where I had a website, a blog and where I could just write stuff out, not knowing if anybody reads it, but if they did, and if they contacted me (via comment function, or e-mail) it felt so good. So much better than any like, or comment on social media. I still just need that kick int he butt, I guess (I just lack the time for it; plus I am not a creative person like you). But this video just pushed me a whole lot in that direction. And if I haven't mentioned it yet: I love your website. It's so 90s :D

    To support your point, a few months ago I read the suggestions of a social media consultant for writers. Two important take aways: 1. If you want to be successful as a writer with social media, have your own website, write there, and then publish links to the texts on your website on social media channels. This probably also applies for other type of content, though she only provided statistics for textual content. This has a lot of advantages, not the least, that the content is yours. Social media platforms can take down your links with random excuses, but never your content. Also you don't have to copy/paste the whole content to all the platforms, but just a short abstract, and the link. 2. In the big social media platforms, on average roughly 10% of your followers ever see your post in their feed - not 10% of all people, but 10% of your actual followers. The big outlier here is the fediverse, a federated web of various social media servers. These could be mastodon, or Friendica for text, Pixelfed for images, PeerTube for video, Castopod for podcasts, etc. All platforms work together. E.g. comments on a PeerTube Video my a mastodon user, are mastodon posts, which reference the video. A new image on Pixelfed will show up e.g. in your followers mastodon feed. There the algorithm is just a simple timeline. Therefore all your followers will have your post in their feed. So a single follower in the fediverse is worth ten followers on the big platforms. Even though these platforms have less users, posting there can well pay off. As you also said, you'll need ways to promote your website, if you want to earn money with e.g. your art, your music, your writing, etc. Obviously you can post links to new content on your website to social media, just like that social media consultant above recommended. You should definitely do that as long as your customers are there. As an old geezer, I'll also tell you a few things we did, before these centralized social media silos took over. We also had the issue, to make our website known, of course. - Connect with friends, or like-minded people and put links to their websites on your site in return for them putting links to yours on theirs. That can be pretty organic, e.g. in blog posts, where you write about each others work. Or "Look, I've met an old friend. She's also creating amazing art." with a photo of both of you, and a link to their page. That'll incentivize your audience to also visit your friends page, and vice versa. Since that audience already is interested in your friends similar stuff, chances are, they'll also like yours. After a while, repeat that, so that users, who look for the latest content are also exposed to your friends work. - If at least some of your content is something like e.g. a podcast, or a blog, Imageblog, etc. there are aggregators, where users of these aggregators get exposed to your content, and also can dig deeper by visiting your website. Here the "filter", who actually gets exposed to a link to your website is more on the aggregators side. Therefore it's a bit of a bet, just like social media is. But back then it did work. I don't know, how many people use these aggregators nowadays. - Learn how to make your website work easily for search engines. That's not so much anything about the content, but the technical stuff in the background, but you'll have to feed it. Like a description header, keywords, a sitemap.xml file, etc. Really sophisticated search engine optimization ist, of course, a lot more, but at least make it easy for search engines to read, and index your page. Most content management systems are actually good at supporting you with that, but you still have to put in the information. - Have the URL to your website in pretty much every business communication, you do. You have flyers, you place in local pubs? Put the URL there, maybe even with a QR-code. Band posters for your next concert? Have your URL and QR-code on them. A business card? URL and QR-code. You release a vinyl record, or a CD? URL and QR-code on the back of the cover. You sell posters with your art? URL and QR-code on the back. Etc. Just put it everywhere possible. Hope that helps, and the best of luck to you, and everyone, who's returning to the web as it was intended to be. I really wish this to evolve into a new trend. 🙂

    Fantastic illustrations, discussion! Thanks!!! You describe the core purpose of the internet- it's not only curated friends, like an exhibit of humans in a socmed corpo display case.* Also, I think your point on bottom line is domain ($20~/year) and free hosting with some hassle somewhere? (find the function to download your content once a [period] for backup); goes up in price about $20-50 increments for more (>$300 increments for high function). *that also exists and is great for what it is; maybe media algorithms just amplify cynacism and meanness for their natural infectiousness. It brought your vid to my feed-trough😂 though😊

    Around 2:00 "AI art" totally agree- also that it's nuanced convo (こんな話をひそひそと言おう。ユーテューブッの算法が聞いて怒るから😂) It's not too hard to link your favorite websites in your website, without algorithmic filtering- or analog real-time algorithm, your own sorting process

    Facebook helped kill a lot of my favourite websites, and for what? Social media sucks now. I love this premise though. I miss websites, I miss when the internet was fun. Whenever I discover someone I get way more excited if they have a unique website rather than just an instagram or patreon or whatever

    I understand the desire to want a domain and hosting for free, especially if you're young, either too young to have a job or you have a job that just doesn't pay well enough that you can spare money for something as seemingly "frivolous" as a website. I've been there myself, and it sucks. Unfortunately, though, websites really do cost money: either you pay with money, or you pay with lack of control over the content, i.e. you get ads forced on to your site, or you get a big ugly corporate banner stuck at the top. And, just in case people are wondering *why* these things cost money: * Domains cost money because all the DNS servers around the world need to be maintained by someone, and they invest a lot of money into ensuring the web runs smoothly and into defending against bot nets and the like. * Hosting costs money because you're basically renting the use of someone's computer, ideally with the expectation that they'll take care of ensuring the server hardware (and possibly software, depending on what sort of hosting you have) is kept running. Add a big dollop of capitalism on top of that and here we are: things cost money :( edit: regarding the AI thing, I agree with you. People using AI to make art aren't artists, they're patrons commissioning "art" from an AI.

  • @Post-ModernCzechoslovakianWar

    When I heard you reference how we are living in cyberpunk but without the cool aesthetic, I was just thinking how you have the cool aesthetic. I normally hair colors like purple don't look flattering, but you pull it off well. Also, the aesthetic of your website is great! Funny, I ran into you today when I decided to get up and try CodeCamp's course on HTML again. I've desired to make a website for years and never got to it.

    If you are on social media for any other reason than being part of a community it's not going to be any fun. It sounds like you wanted people to follow your instagram and to follow YOU but you had no desire to be part of any kind of community. That makes you the problem. That's the main problem with the internet. Everybody is me me me and no one wants to engage. I'm on instagram and I'm part of the sewing community there. I follow everyone back who follows me. I engage with those who take their time to engage with me. I give them my eyeballs, advice with problems they may be having with their sewing projects etc. I agree a website is important. But you are going to have zero chance that anyone will know it even exist if you aren't promoting it on social media. We don't need personal websites as much as we need COMMUNITY. That's truly what's missing from the internet.

Edit, I should note that LuvstarKei does have a feed, but neglecting a mention of RSS in this video was sort of big. Anyone who has run social media knows that acquisition is only half the battle when it comes to getting noticed in the world, retention of that attention is just as important especially if hoping for commission work to come from the exposure.
