Winter Storm ALERT: SIGNIFICANT Snow, Ice, & Sub-Zero Temps!
**Winter Storm ALERT: SIGNIFICANT Snow, Ice, & Sub-Zero Temps!**
A major winter storm is bringing significant snow, ice, high winds, and sub-zero temperatures to the Midwest, Ohio Valley, and Southeast. This storm will set the stage for brutal arctic air as a branch of the Polar Vortex impacts the eastern United States by next weekend! If you're a weather enthusiast or meteorologist, or simply preparing for winter’s worst, this forecast will keep you informed with the latest analysis and trends on this dangerous storm. Don’t miss this in-depth look at how this system will unfold!
What’s Happening:
This powerful winter storm will develop over Kansas on Saturday before moving into Missouri and then Kentucky on Sunday. Heavy snow is expected across Central Illinois, Central Indiana, and Central Ohio, with some areas bracing for dangerous travel conditions and accumulations. Meanwhile, Missouri, Kentucky, and areas along the Ohio River could face an ice storm with up to 0.25" of ice accumulation, leading to power outages and treacherous roads.
Warm air surging through Kentucky will meet the advancing cold air, creating a sharp temperature gradient. This boundary will fuel a strong line of severe storms across Tennessee and as far south as New Orleans on Sunday afternoon and evening, with the potential for damaging winds and heavy rainfall.
Arctic Air on the Way:
Once the storm passes, an intense arctic blast featuring a branch of the Polar Vortex will sweep southward, bringing dangerously cold temperatures to much of the central and eastern U.S. On Friday, the Dakotas could see temperatures drop to -10°F to -20°F, with sub-zero temperatures expanding into the Ohio Valley over the weekend. This marks the first wave of frigid conditions expected to deepen across the region as winter intensifies. Models continue to point that the coldest temperatures are yet to come!
Northern Snow & Lake Effect:
Further north, significant snow will fall south and east of Hudson Bay as a low-pressure system spins across Quebec on Thursday and Friday.
Breaking Down the Details:
This video takes you through the latest weather models, explaining why it’s critical to focus on model trends and not just individual runs. Using upper air patterns, we’ll help refine the forecast as new data comes in from weather stations and sensors on Friday. By Saturday morning, we’ll have an even clearer picture of the storm’s track and the exact types and amounts of precipitation expected.
Why This Storm Matters:
The combination of high winds, heavy snow, significant ice, and severe cold makes this a high-impact event for millions of Americans. Whether you’re preparing for winter weather or just curious about the science behind it, this forecast delivers the critical information you need to stay ahead of the storm.

    Thank you for the explanation of the hodograph and its implication. What phenomenon creates the most atmospheric shear?

    • @TheWeatherFarm
      @TheWeatherFarm 8 днів тому

      Different types of weather creates different types of shear. Jet streams create vertical shear in the atmosphere and mid-latitude storms (like we see in the US) create both vertical and horizontal shear. However the outflow boundary of an intense thunderstorm creates a horizontal shear So different phenomena create different types of shear.

      It’s something we will continue to monitor closely. We are still looking somewhere around the 7th through the 10th, plus or minus a couple of days.

      @@TheWeatherFarm Any longer range signs of a pattern shift for arctic air in the northwest? I'm in northwest Oregon, plenty of snow for the Cascades, but the lowlands have been consistently mild be it rainy or dry. I am tired of resilient ridge after ridge and surprised that it is so mild in my region given that we are in a weak la nina. Isn't la nina normally give the northwest better than normal chances for arctic air and snow? Other forecasters have told me that the mjo is a key factor, but what else is going on? I don't understand why winter is acting more 'el nino' like right now even though we are in a weak la nina.

    You show the averaged 500mb maps how reliable is the data for three weeks out? Does averaging improve their reliability?

    • @TheWeatherFarm
      @TheWeatherFarm 15 днів тому

      Well to be honest - an ensemble model or average over several days helps to smooth out the outliers that may appear one day of a week or in one particular model run. Think of it as if you are shooting archery. If the target is 10m away and you are off just a little you probably are going to be close enough to the target. But that same amount of error at a target 100m away, the precision or accuracy is going to be a lot less. Same thing with weather models. Anything that looks three weeks out should be for directional or trend analysis at best. Thanks for the question!

      I would agree - it was very dry here in Central Indiana for most of late summer into the fall. It was great to be able to get the crops out of the fields on time, but we definitely could have used some more rain! How were the yields in your part of the country?

  • @shelbifortner4598

    Agreed! I love how much I learn about why. Weather isn’t random. It’s science!! My questions now are: 1- what factors influence the pressure? 2- I don’t understand your explanation of why we get rain instead of snow, and I think I remember learning that the water in precipitation is “picked up” as the system moves over the ocean. How does that part happen (the “picking up”)?

    • @TheWeatherFarm
      @TheWeatherFarm 20 днів тому

      Great questions - Pressure is influenced by temperature, altitude, air movement and humidity. Warm air tends to rise leading to lower pressures at the surface and cold air tends to sink, causes higher pressure at the surface. Altitude impacts it because the higher you go in elevation, the less total air above that is pushing down creating pressure. In the video, I tried to emphasize the precipitation on the West Coast as a function of the atmospheric rivers hitting the West Coast. The Pacific Ocean provides abundant moisture, which is transported inland by strong winds and lifted into the atmosphere by mountain ranges, creating heavy rain and snow. Hope this helps!

    Thank you for the explanations of the freezing rain vs snow! You started with the explanation of the atmospheric river, can you explain a bit more what that is?

    • @TheWeatherFarm
      @TheWeatherFarm 22 дні тому

      Yes I can! An Atmospheric River (AR) is a concentrated plume of moisture being transported from tropical or sub-tropical environments into the higher latitudes. As this water vapor is transported over cooler areas, it must release the precipitation as cooler air can not hold as much moisture as warmer air. This is why we see significant amounts of precipitation with ARs. A common one is the moisture stream from areas near Hawai'i to the West Coast of the United States and British Columbia in Canada.

      Thanks for stopping by! We have seen the same in the Midwest. We finally got above seasonal norms yesterday here… we will have a couple warm days and then a jab of colder air for a couple of days and then back to warm. It is how we see the pattern over the next 8-14 days.

    What is arctic oscillation?

    • @TheWeatherFarm
      @TheWeatherFarm 28 днів тому

      Arctic Oscillation refers to the comparison of the atmospheric pressure in the Arctic (above the Arctic Circle) and the middle-latitudes (where the United States is). The "oscillation" between higher than normal pressures and lower than normal pressures between the two areas helps us forecast potential stormier patterns and arctic air outbreaks especially in winter.

    Thank you for the explanation of the cut off low and effects of that over Texas and the snow pack in the far north. When you talk about the snow pack is that ground snow or air carrying snow?

    • @TheWeatherFarm
      @TheWeatherFarm 28 днів тому

      Thanks for the question - I am talking about snow pack as in snow depth. How much snow is on the ground at observation time (usually 7am local). Because we have seen temperatures approaching 15 and 20 degrees above normal across Southern Alberta and Saskatchewan, we have been eroding the snow pack on the ground.

      There are a lot of teleconnections present in our atmosphere. Another one we watch (and haven't talked about here) is the Madden-Julian Oscillation and its eight phases. It is one of the sources we also consult as we look out past two or three weeks.
