    Just seen your video. The Skew gear ETC6139 you pull out the engine appears to have a fixed flange on the bottom, and a split Bronze bush? Is this a early 3 bearing 2.25? At 12:07 you show the entire skew gear, which looks to have a Black Thrust washer sitting directly under skew gear teeth and above the Bronze bush. The later Skew gears used a one piece bronze bush and were assembled from below with a thrust washer then locking collar below the Bronze bush. On your example, a Trust washer appears to sit above the bronze bush, directly below the Skew gear teeth. With a fixed grub screw, this would change the contact heights of skew gear to Cam shaft, Pump drive, Etc.. Can you confirm or explain this difference. Or is there yet another version of the Skew gear ETC6139 I've not seen yet? I have two different versions both with the same one piece Bronze bush, part no: 522745. Thanks, great vids

      Hi, it was an early 3 bearing engine, I can't recall what the skew gear looked like without re'watching the video (it was a few years ago). I never knew there were different skew gears available. I did a little research before building that engine and couldn't find any reference to different gears.

    The timing Cam wheel on the end of the cam shaft has a number of splines that allows for fine advance or retarding by a few minutes.. I'm hoping this may allow This might allow 20 degrees to be obtained bang on, if the pump drive is still out.... I see you have the 3 bearing 2.25. The 5 bearing 2.25 has a slightly altered Skew gear design, with one piece bronze bush and a thrust washer. Nice to see it being done...

    Just finished mine. One of my door tops had a bit of rust that needed to be welded. Mine have the window locks on the top that are riveted in place. They had to be removed to get the window out. I also didn’t have the small spacers . I referenced the Haynes restoration manual as well, but it’s always helpful to watch someone. Thanks again Cheers!👍

    • @retro.restorations
      @retro.restorations 4 місяці тому

      A 78 series 3 would of originally come with a 3 bearing engine, and to be honest, unless you're thrashing it off road it won't be a problem, land rover and rover were using the 3 bearing crank for nearly 40 years without major issues unless driven really hard. Why not replace the gasket on the other engine? 🙂👍

    How ever many times do they want the flywheel to turn before the compressor drops off! Just put the decompressor wheel in the third groove, face backwards with a Series2,, with the handle towards you, and it isn't a problem. This lot of cowboys didn't even seem to worry where the starting mark was on the flywheel.

    Crimping (using the correct crimping tool) is the preferred method of attaching bullet connectors as soldering makes the wires rigid and prone to breaking. The correct crimping tool does not make the connector splay out so it will still fit in the shroud.

      It's around 1980 I can't remember exactly. Using good quality parts It's around £700/£800 nowadays for a complete front brake and swivel ball rebuild. Good quality swivel balls have gotten expensive. I'm based near Sheffield South Yorkshire. 🙂👍

    • @jackstaenergy

      Thanks for the quick answer, mine was restored by Ken Wheelwright around about 2000, it then went and sat in a museum in Germany for 15 years, its only done a couple of thousand miles since the restoration. The issue I have is gear oil leaking into the brake drum on the drivers side, you think I just need a seal and no need for full rebuild? By the way the restoration it had was a full nut and bolt job done by Ken who did rest jobs for Land Rover before they set up there own classic department, bit of a leg end apparently.@@retro.restorations

    • @retro.restorations
      @retro.restorations 7 місяців тому

      @jackstaenergy it sounds like you need new oil seals. They dont last forever, so even with very low mileage they will leak eventually. If you don't need new swivel balls that takes atleast £450 off the bill, the job is still the same regardless but just refitting the original swivels.

    Like watching your videos. The -40 reading is normally open circuit fault So intermittent fault on the sensor. And if linked to the coolant sensor, reading -40 this would have an effect on the transmission as the coolant temp and trans temp.would have a huge difference. That my theory, but handy to know as I have a disco 3....... also a series 2a engine diesel in bits in my garage, but no time to rebuild it at the moment

    Where did that green wire by the dynamo end up going? If you have a push button start does that act like a solenoid? Do you still need a solenoid?

    • @retro.restorations
      @retro.restorations 8 місяців тому

      If I remember correctly the wire was for a temp sensor, some heads have an extra sensor at the side of the thermostat housing this one didn't. The push button start is the solenoid so there's no need for another. 🙂👍

    Glow plugs, and full throttle, to start. 16:42; tenth mm is 4 thou. Adjustment is 10 thou, so 4 thou is quite a lot.

    • @retro.restorations
      @retro.restorations 9 місяців тому

      If you need full throttle to start it there's an issue somewhere. The measurement I was referring to was the timing if I remember correctly (it was a few years ago) I probably meant to say 100th of a mm out either way I was referring to how far out the timing was, so 4 thou of timing isn't bad at all a timing chain stretches loads more than that in the first few miles of running, that's why the fuel pump is adjustable to compensate for it. 🙂👍
