    Please can you tell me how thick the plexiglass you use is? - Thank you.

    • @starlustudio1498
      @starlustudio1498 5 днів тому

      For this print I used the plexiglass salvaged from a broken Ikea frame. Plexiglass, or acrylic, for IKEA frames is typically 2 millimeters thick.

    Thanks for the great video! Just a couple of quick questions: Is the plexi-glass you're using not usually intended for printmaking? I'm in Australia so wondering if it's what we call "perspex". Also, are the diamond tip scribes/needles the sharpest and easiest tools to get good lines, more than steel or other tips? I'm considering buying one but all printmaking tools are expensive here.

    • @starlustudio1498
      @starlustudio1498 23 дні тому

      The plexiglass-glass I'm using is intended for use in frames instead of glass. It is thin a flexible. I like it because I don't have to file and smooth the edges to prevent it from shearing the paper like I would have to with thicker plexiglass. I have also used other plastic from food containers that can work well too. After looking up Perspex I see that it seems to be a lot like plexiglass. I don't see a reason that you can't give it a try.

    The reveal on this is so good 😂 I'd love to know more about the ceramic baron too! How does it compare to other barons and have you had issues with it on certain papers? Who made yours? It's cute and reminds me of a mushroom!

    • @starlustudio1498
      @starlustudio1498 2 місяці тому

      Actually, I make them, originally as gifts for friends in my printmaking group. As for how they compare to other barons, I've used a wooden spoon, a silver spoon, a commercial baron and they all have their uses. I like the way I can use this one for both general pressing and burnishing. This baron has worked just fine on every paper I've used so far with no problems to report. I started out selling a few of the extras on my Etsy artist site: www.etsy.com/shop/StarluStudio. I list them in small batches whenever I get around to firing my kiln.

    • @starlustudio1498
      @starlustudio1498 5 місяців тому

      I use recycled plexiglass from old ikea frames. They are thin. You can use thicker plexiglass but will have to round and burnish the sharp edges to prevent it from cutting your paper.

    Neat upcycle idea, I always like to try these. :) How hard are you pressing down when etching the plate? When I've tried this so far I've gotten nothing from my pulls after removing ink but can clearly see the image inked if that makes sense.

    • @starlustudio1498
      @starlustudio1498 5 місяців тому

      First, Your scratches should be deep enough to hold ink. You said that they are so Second, be sure that your paper is damp (not wet) when you start pressing the plate. Third, you need to apply enough pressure to transfer the image. Use the back of a spoon (or a press) applying a lot of pressure. Lift a corner to see if a transfer is being made, if not, burnish the area again applying pressure. You should be able to see the outline of your plate in your paper as well as your image when you're done. I hope this helps.
