Welcome to my new channel centered around creative self discovery and style philosophy!
It seems to me that David Kibbe has been able to take it to the next level of nonsense with his new book.
@@eunicenardin7535 oop!
With just dabbling in Kibbe very tangentially, it seemed difficult to follow, but I have gotten a lot of other influencers' systems some which reference his system some of which don't. Luckily there's plenty of other people to learn from nowadays so we all can pick and choose whomever makes the most sense for our learning styles, etc. Also his first book came out in 1987, and no young people probably cared at the time which makes his audience more of a boomer audience than a Gen X audience.
I forgot to add I'm my last comment there was a part where he calls the book a diy way for us to find our type and makes a comment that when it comes to people he trains in his system, that their trained to look for specific things, which he points out is not listed in the book. First I was surprised because I didn't think he trained anyone, plus if there are specifics to look for to distinguish lines, why would he Not tell us and make our lives so much easier. Did anyone else notice this in his book or was it a fever dream?
@@TinaB.-fr1hl thank you for all of your thoughts!! I’ve TRIED to look for people he trains and I found absolutely nothing … 🫠
I feel like I've learned to see it just on my own and by viewing so many people, hyperfocusing on it for like 6 months. But regardless I'm not seeing much use to his system, it feels more and more like a big scam and waste of time (not the types of course, but the styling advice). It's convenient for him that he removed all the styling rules which were original to him.
Part of the problem I always found with kibbe,is his vagueness. He's lived decades with his concepts so a lot of what's obvious to him isn't to us and I don't think he sees that.
@@TinaB.-fr1hl it’s so convenient that he now called objectivity a hoax because he’s always vague!!
I love this content, omg, thank you so much for highlighting the Reddit comment which called out the SK exercises, how absolutely unintelligible they are, and how DK DID maintain that the exercises were the key to everything! DK is so full of sh*t! I would watch you make a 2 hour long fact checking video just calling out all the crazy assertions he’s made… can’t wait for inevitable ongoing discourse from him about how “the internet” has misunderstood his new book.
@@rebekahnewman3876 literally my pleasure ~ I’m so glad it resonated! I was getting a little fired up reading reviews and critiques before filming and I couldn’t help myself. Maybe someday I’ll make a patreon where I can be mean 🙂↕️ because I do have more thoughts 🤭
@@StylingbyPriestI would definitely sub to patreon for mean DK content 😂❤️❤️❤️
@ 🤭 noted
You've captured my feelings exactly with this review. I honestly think I'm done with Kibbe now, I don't see the point anymore. Everything I've learned about the system is just always confusing and the new book did not help. Admittedly it has helped me settle on an ID, but now what? I don't know what to do with it since he omitted any real recommendations. I never cared for his colour analysis system, I think it's outdated, so that part of the book for me is only taking up unnecessary space. I also didn't care for mindset work, that's not why I picked up this book. Honestly, after the "typing" chapter I just skimmed through the last half of the book and found it disappointing.
I bought the book but have not started to read it yet. This was a great critique. And I think I’ll like the book - and I would have likes the first book too. It’s about being a generation X woman and loving old Hollywood that Kibbe’s views just seem spot on, not toxic at all. I find most of the trends after millenium just ugly. Younger people often do not, obviously. I’ll read the Kibbe book right after Dita Von Teese’s Your Beauty Mark that I’m currently reading 😊
@@Patakultti oooh I love dita von teese! I’ve always been a bit old fashioned for my age so I think all of this checks out 🤭 the book is a really fun read! Feel free to update after reading! ♥️🪽
I have 3 words to say about DK: gaslighting, narcissistic, conman.
Complete with flying monkeys helping him control his narrative on his online groups. Thanked some of them in the back of his book, not nice people.
@@RebeccaJordan-z6q honestly I can understand that. I’m not sure what I think his intentions are but I’m glad he isn’t constantly coming out with new ways to make money.
I love this review can you do the game some by one, not everyone is able to comprehend 100% what he means in the books
I found it easy to work out my id from it but that’s only because I’ve experienced with alterations. I don’t think it’s easy to work out unless you understand your needs there.
@@yesme9115 that makes sense! Thank you for sharing 🫶🏻🪽
I found it easy also, should've trusted my own judgement on it years ago instead of listening to those who presumed they knew more. The worst was a so called professional who misdiagnosed me. Live and learn.
@@SB-xl8lp yeah I was surprised by how different his original book was to the way people made it seem online. From what I can tell, a lot of the updates in “strictly kibbe” has made a lot of people confused
Here I am: A GenX who is not benefiting from this book at all! I watched Mili Velikova's review video and shared my thoughts on the comments section. As an older woman in her 50s I have a keen perception about people. I don't know David Kibbe, I am not a member of any group related to his styling techniques. I bought the book because I found this styling approach interesting by watching UA-cam videos. My gut feeling is that he is a stylist Con Artist. I said it! He has created this "persona" that only exists within his fantastical Kibbe World. Aside that, I have never heard of him or seen him in any fashion related scenes. I call him "The Wizard of Oz of the fashionsphere". He is not known for styling any celebrities or famous people. His name has never come up anywhere, and I compare that to stylists of the height of Law Roach, Andre Leon Tally or even Tim Gunn. His supposed "system" was a rip off of the work of Harriet McJimsey. He made his own concoction of that previous system and made it seems like he created something. I found the book boring, the language convoluted, shallow, and lots of nonsense. It is more of a self-help book than a true styling guide.
@@rosanilebron1566 thank you so much for sharing! You are not the first person I’ve heard compare him to the Wizard of oz 💚 I think it’s a very apt comparison, unfortunately. I’m sorry you didn’t find success with this book ~ I’m honestly glad to be done with his system after years of study and confusion! I would loooove for Law Roach {or someone who’s actually GOOD at styling} to share their secrets 🤭
Law Roach is the ultimate young stylist. Also, Jenna Ortega stylist Enrique Meléndez@@StylingbyPriest
@@StylingbyPriest Law Roach or Jenna Ortega's stylist Enrique Melendez. Both are really good with their high-profile clients.
I 1000% agree, @rosanilebron1566. I paid for a very expensive 3-day "consult" several years ago, and I am here to tell you that the emperor has no clothes. It's a tragedy when we pay a monstrous sum for a self-affirming experience from a so-called expert, when he sucks all of the joy out of the room by saying, "Everyone can wear anything." He was also unable to discuss the contents of his original book with me. I wonder if he even wrote it (always wondered if this was a vehicle to launch Susan to who knows where). Thanks for your honest, humorous, fair review, @StylingbyPriest.
BTW, when this excellent video review says, "There's no evidence of a career," spot on. David seems to be very closely guarded and very private for such an extrovert. There's a 1-hr+ TY interview by Gabriella of Besame Cosmetics, and David doesn't even show his face. It's just a picture. At least he didn't appear after 20 minutes, which is when I gave up because my curiosity was more morbid than genuine. Also, I am fairly certain there is NO Kibbe staff trained by him. That's the line they sold me years back, but I saw no evidence that there's anyone but David and Susan. And the secretary (Gladys?) with whom I made the consultation arrangements had a voice that was a dead ringer for Susan's. I could tell stories for days but I fear she's very litigious.
Great vid!!!
@@abilenekurtz3345 thank you! ILY!!
Thank you for the review, I wish I had seen it before buying the book. While I didn’t hate reading it, it did feel half baked and I’m not sure what to do with the information I got from it.
@@ozbolder I’m glad I’m not the only one! I plan to review every style theory under the sun {including a few of my own} so hopefully we can find something that works for you! 🫶🏻🪽 please feel free to share your style struggles and I’ll do my best to address them!
@ currently I feel good with my colors and aesthetic but silhouette harmony/melody is where I struggle. As a parent I want to be able to get dressed quickly and move around easily but I also want to look put together and stylish. Also my partner what’s to upgrade his style too and it has been really hard to find good advice for men in general particularly around the topic of harmony/melody.
I think a lot of his color advice is not accurate to what other people see.
@@lilibetp I agree! Conveniently, he threw out the whole idea of objectivity 🤭
My goodness, this is my first time on your channel. I love your energy, good work on the preperation for this video. You're such a delight, much love 😊

Loved it.
You're a very good artist. Grrat accents and explanation.
More vidoes ,pls.
I'd like you to read more from the book and comment. Good video.
I agree with a lot of the critique. I definitely could have done without the constant mentions of his past. But then again. He is a RU in Ritas style key and you can clearly see that in the entire book. A lot of things were a bit alienating because of that. I'm very grateful for Reddit for closing the "knowledge gaps" the book "left me with". But at the end of the day it is his system. He didn't create it for every woman but for himself. We just decided we want a piece of that cake lol
@@ducklingscap897 forgive my ignorance ~ what’s “RU”?
@@StylingbyPriest Rita created a style key system. It basically describes a logic for your style. There are four style keys (visualized with quadrants). There are two dimensions of style: left/right and up/down. RU means right up. It means when creating an outfit the person cares about their environment and the message the outfit is going to send (right logic) and their outfit is going to be a bit "extra" or bolder because the people want to be looked at (up logic). According to the "up logic" "extra" in style helps people make sense of you: it’s like a lens that helps people properly focus and *see* you. In contrast the left style logic means that styling choices are best guided by your inner experiences, sense of self (so you don't really care about sending out messages into the world. Your style is about you and nobody else) and the down style logic means that getting dressed is about emotionally connecting with yourself and the situation you’re moving in to. Outfits are often more simple as people feel easily overwhelmed by certain clothes. I feel that Kibbes book is very focused on style being a message and all that.
@ that’s so fun! I can’t wait to learn more ~ thank you so much for explaining 🫶🏻🪽
Good review! Reddit dweller and contributor here. Lots of saucy information there lol. Maybe you missed the comment about him taking a class in 1980's with one of Kitcheners employees and then writing the book so maybe he was never a stylist/it wasn't based on his experiences.
@@notblondeswede Thank you! This is all news to me, but I’m very interested in learning more! Reddit is a little scary and confusing for me but I’m open if you have suggestions for me to check out! Apparently in the 80s, he had a makeover salon called Makeover in Manhattan, but it was really difficult to find any information on it.
Im super excited to see your new video! It was nice to hear your critiques, as how i felt like i wanted to portray myself didnt fit with how i should look by what kibbe says!
@@lillianhartwell7391 thank you for watching! I had a similar issue! As much as I love flamboyant natural, gamine-esque clothing has always spoken to me the most! And I think that’s just fine!🤭✨
Honesty I understand you not longer typing persons in their kibbe body type after this video. I think I would have done the same! Looking forward to your styling systems!😊
@@VictoriaDiamond-l7y I wanted to like it so badly!! But at least now I see some holes of understanding that need filling! 🫶🏻
I’m very happy I didn’t bought it. It sounds like there isn’t a lot of good explained theory and it’s just him giving chat got styling advice that is cryptic and not understandable 😂😂😂
@@VictoriaDiamond-l7y yeah you can absolutely learn more just scrolling on TikTok but you didn’t hear it from me 🤭
I started laughing because I never had a pleasent experience in a dressing room! It’s the most uncomfortable part of a store for me… I often even skip going there and just leave the store without anything because I don’t wanna go there and do the work 😂😂😂
@@VictoriaDiamond-l7y I didn’t have time for it in the vid but the very first thing I tried on got stuck on my fresh ear piercing!!! Definitely hurt the vibe … and my ear! ~ I shop exclusively second hand and I miss being able to try things on! 🎉I’m not going to read Kibby’s book now😂 I am looking forward to hear more about your style philosophy! Your perspectives and keen eye for style are impressive! ❤
@@Heidijensen93 haha thank you! They’re sending a physical copy to me so I’ll show you some of the best bits ☺️
Very interesting to hear your thoughts, lots of them were similar to my experience of the book too! Loved seeing the shopping section - i literally wondered what shops stock their clothes by sizing? And yeah the draping still confuses me! Agree with the rest of the critiques as well :)
The shopping part kind of cracked me up because in the book he kept praising himself for staying up to date by shopping in stores! Thank you for the back up! 🤭✨
Also thank you so much for watching and commenting! I’m excited I found your channel and can’t wait to watch more! ♥️🪽
@@StylingbyPriest I don't want to be mean, but some of the outfits he put together had a very outdated feel and definitely not something I see in stores at all ... (I loved his dramatic look, that lady looked so stylish) But the SC look - I wouldn't know where to find such a dress?! (I don't like the dress but that's not even the point, I haven't seen that sort of silhouette anywhere). So I feel like him not giving any guidance on options felt very ... unhelpful!
I was shocked and not in a good way!🙈 I trusted that I didn’t like his 80s styling because it was a different time but turns out I just don’t like his styling! I’m consfused why it’s so hard to find evidence of his thousands of transformations 🧐✨
