Harley Benton's Telecaster-Style, EMG-equipped "Metal" guitar is an attractive buy considering its features and price-point. But is it any good? Is it worth it? And are the £15 Amazon special pair of pickups I replace the EMGs with even functional!?

For more fuzzy noises check out my band, Ghozer on all streaming services: ditto.fm/black-lotus The Boss HM-2 is a legend, but still a pigeon-holed, meme of a pedal. Considering, however, that the "H" knob is an incredibly powerful mids knob and that it can easily clean up at all distortion levels - why limit it!? In this video we sue a modern Waza Craft reissue to put the HM-2 circuit to the t...

Song sounds like King Gizzard ATLW. Cool
I'd love to see a video posted of this song with the lyrics. Great sound
Good idea! I'll hopefully do a new edition with my band, Ghozer, so we could do the lyric video with that.
@doctorfuzzzdirtbox i believe you've got a hit with this one brother!
@doctorfuzzzdirtbox it's gonna be hard to beat that original version 🔥
Great video brother. That song is 🔥 Great vocals and musicianship. Well done sir
@@dav1dandrew Cheers, dude! Glad you enjoyed it!
@doctorfuzzzdirtbox i did bro, most likely gonna get a Carcosa as well. Great demo
bro the end song gives me MASSIVE Killing Joke vibes
@@archive3339 I’ll mark that down under “ridiculously big compliment,” thanks, man!
Gotta say, i'm shocked at how versatile that little thing is. I was looking into buying a bunch of different fuzz pedals for different sounds but after looking at this demo this one pedal does like... everything i want out of a fuzz. Crazy. Thank you for noodling around with all the knobs! Really sold me on this one
Does an ep booster count as a buff for my muff
When it's on, yeah!
Really love the Acapulco and Hizumitas
An overdrive can be a boost, with some optional gain. That's mostly how I've been using my Boss SD1 lately.
My favorite blues pedal
I liked the first one better lol Less high end noise. Preference I guess.
Great comparison. Have you ever played over an OKKO BFGRMWB?
No! What on earth is this barage of letters!? 🤣
@@doctorfuzzzdirtbox ?
I'll Google it
That's a great video. Keep on! Make more!
Thanks, dude! They're on my to do list, haha.
YES. A big muff style fuzz doesn't always have to come first. They are more complex than a fuzz face or other early fuzz models.
I like how it sounds on bass. I think I'm going to pick one up.
Mask audio civil and black math are really great options
Yeah, I'm keen to check those out. the pre-boost they have sounds awesome!
Guitar, into Catalinbread NiCompressor, into EHX ERD, into Ram's Head Big Muff, into Joyo Jackman Bantamp. My current setup 👍.
I want one of these so bad
Wrong!
NOT WRONG
The Orange Burst seems to be a BB Preamp clone.
Yep, it is, but that in turn is a henched up Tube Screamer.
Black Arts Toneworks have some great unique takes on Big Muffs like the Pharaoh, great video tho, though I like running an almost overdrive muff into a vintage top boost Rat into a Marshall, it's almost like the tone in the Defenders of the Faith album
@@Sunke89 what's a "vintage top boost Rat" !?
@@doctorfuzzzdirtbox I think you can find them in Reverb under ProCo Rat Big Box Reissue. They`re in the big square box. I bought mine back in 2008. I remember the manual saying it was a top-boost version. It cuts the low end when you activate it. Unlike other rats, which you can even use on bass, this one filters out the bass.
Get it!!!
Was thinking about getting this pedal but i was worried about whether my guitar would work out with it. Then i realized youre using the exact same one i own lol
Team Fusion-T assemble!
I recently acquired a BE100 head after loving the BE-OD pedal version and loved my Swollen Pickle after the pedal, in front of the amp. I was initially bummed at how the Pickle sounded with the actual amp until I had an epiphany that it might work in the effects loop, duplicating the order with the pedal, which is normally not a good idea. Eureka! It sounds HUGE no matter which channel the BE100 is on!
Ah! Great idea! So the pre-amp is driving the Muff/Pickle with some extra mids and volume just like pushing it with an OD?
That’s what seems to be happening. I had the BEOD set with the treble and bass low, which pokes out the mids by subtraction, and the amp adds back in the brightness and bass in the power amp. I have the sustain pretty low and level knob super low. Still experimenting of course 😊
An SD-1 into an NYC and the mids turned up on your amp will mid push and fuzz it harder than any boutique fuzz pedal on any twisty moustache ethically sourced coffee interlude UA-cam account ever.
wow!!
Lol i just got a jhs pack rat
. . . OK. Not sure what has to do with this video. Enjoy!
Looked like you called out jhs for putting t screamer after a muff and rats do muffins-ish, right?
@@LoveItDirtyOffroad On full whack, they get a little muffy, yeah, and on low gain they get a little TSy, too. The TS/Muff order is the only thing I'm making comment on there.
I stumbled upon a EH Double Muff pedal. Had never seen one before and it is a beautiful distortion that really responds well to the dynamics of your picking/playing. AND you get the switch that changes it to a heavier distortion. Love it and was happy to pay $180 at my local guitar store. Trying to find the 'right' placement for it on my board.
Awesome! Though we should note, the "Muff" circuit in the Muff overdrive and Double Muff aren't actually "Big" Muff circuits at all! Not sure why they stuck with that name for a pedal that as different but they've also done it with the Big Muff Germanium so I think they just like to use it on their dirt pedals.
I’m disappointed that The Algorithm didn’t show this to me when you released it. I was really excited to hear the results of the mystery drive. Man, that’s Bad Monkey really is that good.
There’s minimal difference running a buffer right in front of a big muffler with a short patch cable because the big muffler already has an input buffer at the beginning of the circuit when the effect is engaged. When in bypass it’s true bypass so having an always on buffer somewhere in the chain is good for long pedal runs.
The difference is very noticeable to me. Much brighter. having an input buffer on the active pedal doesn't mean a pre-buffer will have minimal effect. All pedals have input buffers.
Opooph...that Gorilla Whale song rippd.
The first way kinda has a cool broken sound tho
I got this fuzz on sale and spent the weekend messing around with it. It might just be me but I'm not vibing with it. It has more versatility than a muff but it's not like a Carcosa, where you can set it pretty much however you want and get a useful sound. I have to mess with settings more and use what it gives me instead of dialing in a desired sound. It has a certain sound that the behringer super fuzz also has that I don't like, but to a lesser degree. Speaking of not vibing, it doesn't play well with a univibe. If I didn't already have another fuzz that pairs well with vibes that would be a deal breaker. I'm keeping it on the board, but it hasn't displaced anything.
I found this, too. There are knob positions that are niche use if anything! I also found it was kind of dry and muted even on more open settings - like you really had to fight a sound out of it. For someone doing a very specific LoFi fuzz thing, it could work a charm, but it's not the go-to tool in the box. What was it about the Univibe that didn't work?
Wow , never would have thought it ...
My nano metal muff sounds 100x better than this pedal
I had a few (lots of) Muffs. After trying them all, I am satisfied with the cheap, toyish Behringer Vintage Distortion, which I love, and I'm considering re-housing it. In theory, it's a modded green Russian Muff (but it sounds completely different). It's a low-gain, more articulated, with more mids Muff.
That's interesting! I've not played or heard it, myself but had assumed it's a basic NYC clone. Sounds like I need to track one down!
@@doctorfuzzzdirtbox Nope, it's nothing like a NYC Muff! If you find one, they're usually cheap. You should try it out! :)
That song slaps so damn hard. If this is what your band sounds like usually then I am all in.
@@Insanabiliter_In_Linea Thanks, man! We haven't gotten around to a version of this one, but it's in a si.ilar vein. Alt Metal with Stoner, Doom, Sludge and Grunge influences. Check out Ghozer on your streaming service!
Thanks. The tube screamer tweaking helps to dial in some different lead tones
12:33 the bass boost isn’t even engaged on the deluxe. It sounds good❤ I like all the big muffs, I particularly like the Russian for the low end.
5:51 Russian big muffins sounds like Black Sabbath’s Master of Reality tone. Rams head sounds like Black Sabbath volume four. Op amp sound like sabbath bloody sabbath
I fucking LOVE this analogy! 🤘
@ When I look at distortion or look at amp gain. I typically think in Black Sabbath Albums. Because of Tony Iommi had amazing tones for rhythm and lead playing. Favorite eras are Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Black Sabbath/Paranoid, Heaven Hell/mob Rules, Eternal Idol/ headless cross, 7th star.
These are on sale right now. Almost bought one. Thanks for this video lol dont think id like it
Don't blame you. I sold mine! 😅
Can you do a supreme pharaoh demo and review? I own one and would like some insight.
I don't own one at the moment, sorry. Maybe in the future! If you've got one, maybe I should be asking you for the video! 🤣
@@doctorfuzzzdirtbox I do have an iPhone.. ppl have told me to try UA-cam.
Picked up my first Big Muff (Tone Wicker) last summer. Already got a tube screamer (who doesn't). Any other suggestions specific to the Wicker version?
The Wicker can sound great on its own so you might not even need that tube Screamer! otherwise, it's a modern NYC Muff circuit so most of the normal stuff applies with the added flexibility of the tone bypass and wicker toggles. Have fun!
I like the pig snort sound I get from the BIG MUFF PI on my round wound bass for harder metal and non-metal songs alike. It adds that different dimension to the overdrive of my amp through the loop, which is superbly golden and clean. I still get the floor of the bass, but the snarl of the guitar section of the songs, at the same time. Of course I like it on many guitar parts for that standout feeling of arpeggios and some leads. I am using the original Big Muff Pi from back in the days of the LPB-1 and LPB-2, with a small phazer at the end of chain to get a good pig snort out of it.
2:32 2:47
I'm a lot like you when it comes to active pickups. I just hate being paranoid about batteries. There are rechargeable 9v but imagine charging like 2-3 of them before a gig, plus recharging some wireless guitar adapter, maybe you also run your pedals on a rechargable battery. That's a nightmare. A guitar should just work. Also a few years ago i had a charvel with actives and a jet city 100w head and i just couldn't get a clean tone with those pickups. Had to roll off the volume so much it sounded like ass. Both pieces of gear are now gone but the trauma remains 😂
11:57 12:10
From Tokyo, I've been waiting for the video like this!! Thank you so much!!
Carcosa is a modern day classic as is the Fuzz Bender, get them now.
am I th only one who preferred the unbuffered muff?
Maybe not - It certainly keeps the tone more "muff"led when it's unbuffered and if you're going for a truly smooth, rounded-off tone when you hit a BIg Muff, that'll totally make sense.
Whatched it all mate awsome! Bought this pedal years ago and didnt fit in with the band sou d at the time. Anyway dug it out and put it on my board. Now understanding whats going on, the thing is great cant believe what im hearing. Cheers
