How Pro Racers Cheat — Part 2! -- It's Not the Car #33
Cheats II: Electric Boogaloo! Back by popular demand, like before but more! Firsthand accounts from an INTC host who works in the paddock!
Our first installment of “How Pro Racers Cheat” came back in May. We didn’t intend it to become a series, but you loved that show and asked for more. We could have said no, but that would be lame, and then we wouldn’t get to hear Jeff Braun talk about race cars with mercury pumps. (Yes.)
This show’s format rotates weekly, because squirrel. We call this format “Jeff Shares a Secret.”
Like last time, this episode is just Jeff and Sam. Ross was off gallivanting around the country. You know, gadding about! Jazzing around! And other such language I certainly didn’t just lift from an online thesaurus!
Related Trivia: Sam will be at this weekend’s IMSA race at VIR. He may have INTC stickers with him. If you see him and want one of those stickers, all you have to do is utter the super-secret code phrase: “Hey Sam, can I have a sticker?”
This episode was produced by Mike Perlman.

ABOUT THE SHOW:
It’s Not the Car is a podcast about people and speed. We tell racing stories and leave out the boring parts.
Ross Bentley is a former IndyCar driver and an internationally renowned performance coach and author. Jeff Braun is a championship-winning race engineer. Sam Smith is an award-winning journalist and a former executive editor of Road & Track magazine. Together, we explore the emotion at the heart of the machine.
We don’t love racing for the nuts and bolts-we love it for what it asks of the bag of meat at the wheel.
New episodes every Tuesday.

In the summer of 1965, a V-8-powered love song from California dethroned Ferrari, shut up the haters, and won America its first FIA manufacturer’s road-racing championship. Naturally, almost no one here noticed. The Californian car was a gutsy experiment from a 28-year-old ex-GM designer named Pete Brock. Their story holds bootstraps, napkin math, and one badass stab at 180-mph immortality. Thi...

When INTC’s tape day rolled around, Sam was sick. He landed a nasty bout of food poisoning and began wreck-it ralphing. So we postponed our planned show, and then Ross and Jeff hit the mic to improvise. Their topic? The driver-engineer relationship! Questions answered in this episode: Why do you need an engineer, anyway? Why is that relationship crucial in pro racing? Should you be embarrassed ...

    Did I see the race live? No, but I was in the stands the weekend before for testing. The 209 didn't scream like the OHC motors. It had a roar, and the Penske cars just ran the others down in no time flat. This was racing as it was intended. The motors in the museum were on the cutting edge for their time. The support for the 209 was at the speed of sound. A time in history never to be repeated.

    You 2 guys need to read Gary's book....he spent MORE time in the shop working on his cars than both of you put together. He was winning races way, way before he ever got involved in smuggling. I know, i watched him race and WIN for years long before all that crap he got involved in. The Batmobile was 100 percent legal. They flew a tech guy out to Kenny's shop and had him Measure anything he wanted. Kenny just built a better car within the rules. In fact the Hutter engine was DOWN a cylinder and he just drove it as hard as he had to .had that not happened he would of probablbly would of lapped the field. Gary was smart and did the work to build better cars. EVERYBODY has "cheated" at one time or another. Including me. Read Gary's book. You two might learn something.

    Seeing who can come of with creative interpretations of the rules is part of the allure of racing to me. It's also why "Spec" anything and homologated classes don't do it for me. It's hard for most people to understand that concept because usually the guy with cubic dollars can come in and lay waste. However, sometimes you get the little guy who works his ass off and discovers the new thing first. As far as bad ideas with toxic substances, that's never really stopped racers until someone tells them not to do it. Leaded race gas, Toluene/other bad things in F1 fuel, beryllium valve guides/seats, washing nasty parts in solvent tanks with no gloves, etc. Just doing what you've got to do to make the number in the Win column go up.

    Can confirm: When Pro teams come slum it at club weekends for testing time, they have to drive the golf cart back to the grass paddock to borrow a welder. If any of these tales of magic and backyard engineering make you wish you could be a part of it, get involved with club racing. Ferrari won't be there, but it sure gives you that feeling where you haven't felt more alive. It's a lot of work, but way less work than being on the Pro side of things.

    Absolutely loved the retelling of this story. My favorite car of all time. I was at Road America for all the races of those days. Loved that the Cobras kicked the corvettes ass. I also love almost everything Peter Brock has done. By the way Ross’s Slot car was probably a Monogram car. I have one, along with a Cobra roadster. I race them every week at Road America North west, my track ( and my UA-cam channel). Loved the whole episode. Come race with me! Mike M.

    Wow ... some stuff to point out here 🙂: Wales and England are both part of Great Britain ... aero engines even back to the first world war were built using aluminium so were not that heavy for their displacement ... the Supermarine Spitfire and the P51 were both powered by 27 litre Rolls Royce Merlin engines the latter built under licence to Rolls Royce in the US ... and neither of those aircraft had to have huge wings or flipped over from the torque. My qualification aside from having a Welsh mam? My Grandfather worked for Supermarine who built the Spitfire 🙂

    IMO this is why F1 was (mostly) always a superior product. Yes their budgets support that, but the creativity and straddling that line of the Regs vs. the rules and what actually ends up on the car, what the FIA allows (like DAS on the W11) when it's in clear violation of the rules, whereas this engine was more along the lines of what happened at Le Mans in the early 90s especially in the GT1 classes that beat the prototypes, due to the homologation rules being 'flexible' at a whim. This was just truly a case of someone reading between the lines and I understand organizers can't think of everything I always hated the phrase 'spirit of the regs' because well, it's racing and people are going to do anything to win, just like Roger and his teams did here. Saw a bit on this car (PC23) being restored in an issue of 'evo' magazine, and the UA-cam rabbit trail on the car and engine has been fascinating. Well done video, will be back for other episodes!

  • @recrudesce
    @recrudesce 21 день тому

    You don't need a massive wingspan to lift a 27l engine, nor would the aircraft go slow - the Spitfire had a 27l Merlin engine in it and a wingspan of 12.2m, and that thing went ~400mph at full chat.

    I fought video until it was mandatory because I didn't want another thing to manage on a race weekend and it was one of the dumbest things I ever did. It's one of the best tuning tools out there if you can get the driver in the shot because it lets you see why things happened and how the car changes over the course of the run. It also takes load off an overworked brain trying to remember too many things. Also, it's great for return trips to the same track. "OK, we won last time. Let's put the same setup on." Well, we won but the car was doing XYZ, let's do ABC for practice and see if it fixes and we can revert for qual if it's worse.

    A very different situation but with similar problems from long ago. In the 1960's (I think) Shelby took his sports car guys to Indy for the 500. They had a great driver (Revson, maybe) but just couldn't get up to speed at all. Later, the Champion Spark Plug guy stopped by and suggested a bunch of changes they should make. One of the veterans at the track, said the Champion guy really knew his stuff. The team had tried everything they could think of so they tried the spark plug guy's set-up ideas and picked a lot of speed. The teams problem wasn't aero, it was the set-up. They had championship-winning mechanics and a fine driver. Turns out road racing and oval track racing are just two radically different animals. Borrowing from Broadway; "Ya gotta know the territory."

    And in the end ... The 800-pound gorilla of CART, Roger Penske, bought up the IRL and Indianapolis Motor Speedway. But rather than go back to the days of multiple car types competing, he's retained the IRL One-Design concept. So Indycar has become the automotive equivalent of sailboat one-class racing and Dallara's are the racecar version of the Catalina 22. What a shame.

    • @Mario_Ramirez

      I had high expectations when Roger Penske bought the speedway, and finally Tony George was gone for good, but it's been a disappointment, took me over ten years to start paying attention to Indycar again.

      @michaeldelaney7271 Місяць тому

      @@Mario_Ramirez Me too. I thought Roger would turn it into CART 2.0 (the kinder, gentler CART or maybe just "cheaper"). I don't care for One Design racing (except for junior formula's like Indy NXT, F2, etc). So, it seems like Indycar is a Junior formula now. I mean the Indy 500 was THE RACE for most of its history, until the Tony George years. What a shame that Indy has come to such a condition. Now we have 33, 34 or sometimes, if we're lucky, 35 entries. Big Whoop. In the "good old days" there seemed to always be 40+ entries plus spare, or T-cars, for every team.

    • @alexisborden3191
      @alexisborden3191 27 днів тому

      Uh, CART became a spec series before the IRL did, I don't know if you realize that. Champcar went to a single chassis in 2005, Indycar was entirely full-time Dallaras in 2007, 2009 if you count Indy-only entries aswell. Engines too, the IRL was down to Honda in 2006, CART was down to Cosworth in 2003.

    • @alexisborden3191
      @alexisborden3191 27 днів тому

      @@michaeldelaney7271 The reason there's no more 40 car entry lists is people aren't stupid anymore, sponsors know that Billy and his buddies aren't making the field, and aren't gonna pay much for him to plaster their name on his dumptruck of a car. To be the 40th entry of the field you basically have to put up a million dollars of your own money and pray that you're able to beat out 7 other cars, some of which will be organized by professional teams running the full season, with top level parts, and cars that are just as funded as you are. Maybe they have an experienced driver, or engineer. Then, if you qualify, maybe you find a sponsor and you'll break even on the whole thing, MAYBE. The prize money sure isn't gonna pay for it, you wouldn't make it very far up the field anyways compared to teams that have been running this track for decades and have 2, 3, 4, 5, sometimes even 6 cars gathering data for them. Sponsors realize how long of a shot that is, and pay accordingly.

    Enjoyable podcast as always, delightfully offbeat. IMO, Tony George only deserves half of the blame for the "Split", the other half falls to CART. Neither side could find a compromise that was acceptable to both. The initial seeds were sewn back in 1978 with USAC's raging incompetency, the passing of Tony Hulman, and the plane crash that killed several of the USAC execs. Perhaps even earlier with the 1955 formation of USAC. Having been following Indycar racing since the mid-1980's, I remember that mid 90's time period, and it was not as good as many remember, cracks were starting to become fissures. I will also admit to somewhat of a retro-bias against CART for what they did to Gurney in their legislation against stock-blocks and BLAT in the early 80's (RIP to the Pepsi Challenger).

    Alex's crash destroyed what was left of open wheel racing for me. I only started following and watching Indycar again maybe 3-4 years ago. I love that guy, he is a hero of mine. I'm thankful for your comments about him.
