Please leave a suggestion on any ideas on how to make the other two mounts stronger also. Hope you enjoy the video and please like and subscribe. Jamie

    Nice job! I started to watch your VW videos, but car body repair is interessting too. Even if it’s not on a Beetle😃 I’m now working on the chassie of my Volkswagen, but hopefully not too long in the future I will start on the body itselves. (It’s a type 1, with type 181 spindles, and rear axles with reduction boxes from old t2.) I’m, suppose like you, not a suomalainen from birth. I moved to Kainuu with my wife, from Norway inn 2018. Trying too learn the finish language, but find it quite hard😅 Mutta; pikku hilja! That you speak english helps a lot👍

    Nice job.... it's now several orders of magnitude stronger. I think just boxing in the sides of the rear mounts should be good enough *for a standard car at least)... Logic says that the one front mount that really failed will be where the most twisting force and main weakness is... it would be interesting to know if the small crack on the rear mount was on the same side.

    • @jamiedowson6482
      @jamiedowson6482 13 днів тому

      Yes I was thinking the same thing. The crack on the rear mount was on the other side so I guess it was twisting. I would think with the modifications I did that it should be super strong now. I just welded the rear mount crack. Jamie

    Hi Jamie, i'm also located in Belgium and own a TR4IRS. I guess you know but one critical area is to make sure you have a drain from the plenum chamber, I just saw someone else making that comment too. You have different ways to do it, plenty of pictures and info on the TR forum. I thinks there are also plates that go behind the front wheel. I was also wondering if you do anything to protect the chassis from inside, like injecting wax? Great progress by the way, i really enjoy your video's. Cheers, Laurent

    I’ve always liked the TR6 as well as Beetles so looking forward to seeing more👍🏼 So is the shell just bare metal or does it have a paint on it to stop it rusting again? The reason I ask is, I want to get one of my bugs blasted then it will be a slow burning project, but don’t want it to rust again, so once it comes back, what do I paint it with to sit in a UK garage and be worked on for a year or two?

    • @toxaq
      @toxaq 22 дні тому

    • @jamiedowson6482
      @jamiedowson6482 22 дні тому

      You're on the right channel then if you like Beetles and TR6s 😁 As for protecting bare metal it really depends on a few things. If your car is being stored in a dry and heated workshop then it is less likely to flash rust. The cars I build in Finland for example don't need protecting. Also if you live in a country with high humidity or damp conditions then it can obviously potentially cause problems. There a couple of options though if your conditions are not ideal. You can use phosphoric acid to protect it from rusting but this needs to be washed off after application as it will be a pain to clean areas that need welding. Also epoxy primer can be applied as its less porous than regular primer. But again this needs to be removed on the areas you need to weld. Hope this helps. Jamie

    Any quick tips on water leaking in through the kick panel vent? Hood cowel vent drains maybe? Any way to clear those out without having to take all the panels off?😂

    Stock points and condenser always give you less problems. Don't understand why people are always trying to fix what is not broken.

      It turned out in the end to be a problem with one of the accelerator pumps not working consistently in the end. The 123 has worked super and it’s great to be able to make adjustments using the app. I always carry the original distributor with me though just in case 😁

    What lift do you have? Nice, it's good to dig in deeper than you needed to. You went through everything mechanically, and everything got a good clean .

      Thanks for your comment. Yes I didn’t regret pulling it apart plus I learned a lot. Glad you liked the video. I’ll find a link to the lift and post it for you. Jamie

    Fuel pump has 2 rod sizes depending Dynamo/alternator check those sizes either 100mm or 108mm or plus fuel pump knackered

      Jamie has generator model pump, which has longer rod, with shorter one it doesn't even pump. Alternator pump with generator pump shaft will break mounting flange when torqued. membrane swivel shaft doesn't have enough play for that lenght difference to even work. If pump has around 7-9psi pressure, adding 2,5-3mm more gaskets under pump, will drop it to 2,5-3psi. 2.5psi is recommended pressure from factory to single carb set up

      @ this is great thanks. Makes perfect sense. I’ll fit a gauge and plumb the king filter correctly in the spring and go from there. Will also change the bit off valve for original solex and do away with the Chinese one. Hope this solves the problem.

    There seems to be more technical answers here than my mechanical knowledge, but I changed out my pump to a E10 rated one from Heritage. Two years on the trot in spring when putting the car ready for summer use, I had fuel in the sump and my fuel lines were all cracked, R9 as well! I’ve swapped out the lines and pump now and no issues, no cracking and no fuel in the sump for last 18 months. It doesn’t help your carb issue Jamie but I wouldn’t be surprised if the pump diaphragm has failed, this new fuel is an old cars nemesis.

      Its crazy how the modern fuels eat through the hoses. I too have had to change mine and will make it priority every spring when my cars come out of storage to change them. Thanks for your comment. Jamie

      Most market hoses here has already been changed to nitrile butadiene rubber at least inside surface is made from it. Outer layer can be from CR or same NBR as inner layer. Noticed that only ends oh those hoses will crack, and usually just from outside. So when installing new ones, leave few centimeters extra so you can cut 10mm at both ends every year to have clean look at least

      @ that’s a great idea to leave them a little longer. I’ve noticed the same that the hoses start cracking at the ends👌🏼

    Needle and seat is stuck open (most common problem) Take the carb top off and inspect. Old trick is to tap carb sharply with the plastic end of a screwdriver - often will free up needle and seat. If you have too high of fuel pump pressure you can have too long of a pump pushrod. Finally, check pressure with regulator. Usually, fuel in oil is from gas going past the rings and rarely through failed pump diaphragm. Good Luck! 👍

      @jamiedowson6482 Місяць тому

      Thanks for your comment. I will look into the rod length as this could be my solution. I was unaware there were two different lengths. I will also fit a pressure gauge as it would be good to be able to regulate it. Jamie

    • @TheDasbull
      @TheDasbull Місяць тому

      @jamiedowson6482 I have had a sticking needle and seat to be the most likely problem If the pushrod is the longer alternator length it will destroy the fuel pump immediately. Gaskets stacked up and very slight grinding of the pushrod can achieve proper pressure. Best of luck! 👍
