The Most Popular Lick in Sonic Music (The Mitsuda-like Lick)

Filler video that I'm making quickly before a flight I have to catch. It's been non-stop this month with moving and finals, and I finally got to make a tiny little educational video before doing absolutely nothing until next semester. Nuclear + Relaxxogg - Keep It (Tune Twists Episode 1 Result)
Переглядів 7202 місяці тому
Here's the final product of the first episode of Tune Twists, the series where I remix view-submitted music. This episode's chosen track is Relaxxogg's Keep It, a Naganuma-inspired big beat track which I took in a direction similar to Hideki's output on Bomb Rush Cyberfunk. Project files and stems are in the description, and hopefully the making-of video will be out soon, though school's kind o...

Demonstration of the duty cycle clock speed trick described in an earlier video. By changing the percentage of on/off in a volume modulation envelope which cycles at audio rates, you can create 12.5%, 25%, 50%, and 75% squares, or sweeps through the duty cycle range, like a 2A03. This is also how the lower-than-A2 pitch is achieved, rapidly modulating the volume of the channel to give the illus...

Longest deconstruction and first 4K video on the channel. What a combination. This one has been about a year in the making. I posted a WIP for this remake a while back, but only due to some recent finds by a VGM Sources member who wishes to remain uncredited, I wasn't able to finish it until now. We're only missing one minor percussion sample, which, in my opinion, wasn't enough to postpone the...
Sonic Colors: Game Land 1 - Tropical Resort (YM2612 Demake)
Переглядів 1,7 тис.3 місяці тому
This one was to mostly show off something I figured out in the VGM Sources server today. You can make 1-op squares on the YM2612 by modulating the operator volume at audio rates. Combine this with Special Ch. 3 mode using Algorithm 7 and you have four 1-op squares (essentially an SN76489 without noise) in one channel. In addition to that, by changing the percentage of on/off in this modulation ...

This is probably the longest chiptune project I've done to date in terms of creation time, mostly because I was relearning how to do multi-chip projects in FL Studio, as well as recreating the original track. I then had to port my work on the Genesis half over to GENNY from Chipsynth MD since I much prefer CSMD for actually creating chiptune, but it lacks .VGM logging. I do have .vgm files of e...

Sonic 4 Episode 2 Oscilloscope Deconstruction: A New Frontier
Oh yeah, this tingles my brain
did place all these notes or did u play then edit it ? just a music player my self also nice work
I'm in the middle of unpacking currently so all of this is placed. Normally I'd play and edit with a keyboard
16:30 fin.
Nice one!
i like how the drums reference Sonic 1 and 2
its also in stardust speedway, the bell instrument at the end
so jealous of that plugin lull
That sounds like Quick Man's stage, from Mega Man 2...
Good luck man Great song
One of the best Rhodes lines I've heard aside from Salad Plain
Friend Inside Me sounding bassline at the beginning
none of you know how much i love that siren
2:51 Wow, Forces' classic sonic songs can sound very cool if they didn't have the darn synth, neat!
I use it all the time for flute
Persona has a whole lot of that
Rooftop Run has another famous lick!
Great vid, good collection of tracks. This is not what Dante was describing in their tweet though.
True, I discussed this with them in the pinned comment. TL;DR I couldn't think of a better, more succinct way to describe the phrase
0:41 is that brawl
I could used this to learn more about music. Also, I wonder if there's part 2 of this Course?
Not of this episode currently, though there might be, as there's more to mention
dont show this guy gene gadget
Love this video so much. I love that lick so much
I've noticed this motif in a lot of JP and JP-inspired Video Game music. I didn't know it had a name.
I have no idea wtf a lick is but this mix is dope
spongebob steel sting be like
Im pretty sure undertale has that in the intro theme
what's ym2612 & rf5c68?
YM2612 was the FM chip used in the SEGA Genesis. RF5C68 was the PCM chip added on top with the SEGA CD.
chromatic
I always associate that chromatic phrase with Ocarina of Time
Nice video but it feels weird calling this a lick when it's just four notes descending stepwise
Could see this playing on Sonic X
spot on, crazy good
heya! super appreciate having a video dedicated to this little ditty I posted about 4 years ago now hahaha, I will say I feel like a lot of the terminology I used in the original tweet isn't _too_ accurate to the actual conscious use case that composers might have when actually using melodic phrases like this. there's been a consistent misunderstanding by the phrasing that i originally coined but in my opinion (as the person that at the very least made the initial observation that coined the term) the 'lick' itself is not just in reference to the four note chromatic descent that everyone thinks of, but rather the _entire_ melodic sequence, including what i'd consider the most important factor; the 4th interval leap going _into_ the chromatic descent (in Secret of the Forest this would be the Bb going into the chromatic descent starting at Eb). this is why I _personally_ would not actually consider a lot of the material here part of the 'mitsuda lick' canon, nor stuff like the mario 3 warp whistle or pokemon main theme - most of them don't have a 4th leap, but rather are leaping from larger steps. Cool Edge (Night) fits into this however. just wanted to throw in my personal take on the matter because I feel like the 4 note chromatic descent is actually a much more musically common figure that's historically been present everywhere, but I want to avoid conflating this alone with the 'mitsuda lick' idea because it's a bit too broad to me. thank you so much for putting this together!
That makes this the second time we've interacted! To be honest, I'm not very good at music theory nor am I classically trained, so I was aware of the 4th leap but didn't exactly know how to differentiate between instances that do and don't have it. But mostly, my reason for naming the video as I did was because I don't think the chromatic descent has a name and I didn't want to coin a term for something so simple, so I used the most commonly applied name even though it might not be fully correct. Still, a very informative comment which I will pin!
@@NUKELEDGE hey! absolutely no worries, and honestly I totally get it! when i first made the tweet i had never formally trained myself in music theory either (it was before I started my studies in college), so I know what you mean. I think the video still does a really good way of showing off the different ways this particular ditty has been used throughout the sonic series and so it's still a really great watch ^^
thank you for your service dante
I only heard it once, i don't understand this video
watch for the pink notes
@@Rhodochrone Thanks, didn't even notice there were different colours until you pointed it out
Awesome compilation of these. I've always loved that instance of the mitsuda lick over the minor 3rd chord movement in collision chaos (and titanic monarch too, fairly similar). Also hilltop heights was such a nice surpise, fr one of the greatest sonic osts. The mitsuda lick also shows up in the boss theme from that zone!
wow i havent thought about serani poji in a decade, this is a niche i didnt know i needed
1:53
the transition from palmtree panic directly into quartz quadrant just sounds so natural
Never heard anything so smooth in my life.
I made that lick actually
i love that chill arrangement of a song that keeps us on the move... this is something i definitely associate with sega as a whole, it shows up right at the beginning of burning rangers' i just smile too
Funny spotting you in me feed Nuke
DUDE I SEE THAT EVERYWHERE i even use it in some of my songs also collision chaos past sounds like that one part in titanic monarch
I believe it's also about 1:25 into BTS's Metro Madness Act 1
Mmm Palmtree Panic sounds lovely in this soundfont.
I love this lick
unrelated to the entire point of the video but damn i need to hear the full versions of some of these songs w these instruments
Ugh great 👍 The Sega genesis Will never die Good topic mate
hilltop heights in the middle of this is just awesome lmao
Rooftop run really has two licks as its main motif 💀
this very much so feels like a song that would be in one of the labo "games" or game builder garage
