Thank you for the tip about the screw potentially damaging tables. Unfortunately, I didn’t watch your video before trying it myself and it did dig a tiny circle in to my counter 😭 but I was watching your video as I was winding, so I stopped and immediately pulled it off to put a barrier. So you saved me from having a huge divot lol thank you! And you also showed me how to use the umbrella swift, I got the same set that you have and I was mystified because they didn’t include any instructions! You have a follow from me ❤
@@MJ-4311 I'm glad my video was able to help! Thank you!
First one 🎉 Love this video😊 Do you think you could do a video on how to make a support spindle 😅 that would help me very much ❤
@@just_a_wana_be8681 yay! Thank you! I sure can 😁👍
Ooopsie. Made me laugh. THanks for the help.... I'm on it!
i just found your channel and i love it i like how you get start to the point and use simple words its easier for me to understand please keep up the good work🥰
@@just_a_wana_be8681 thank you!
Very nice. I use two part epoxy glue for the whorl and the hook. A tiny countersink of the hole in the whorl on the underside makes a place for the glue bead to go. I use a pin vise to hold the hook drill and then make the hole by hand. I also round off the shoulders of the top of the shaft so the yarn doesnt get hung up there. I always make a notch in the whorl directly behind the mouth of the hook to stop the yarn from slipping around the edge and dropping the spindle on he floor.
@@davidcolter Epoxy is definitely a great alternative to wood glue, especially because of its strength! I used wood glue for this video because of the easy clean up for beginners.
Very interesting. I've been doing a little bit of hand sewing for repairs lately, but I've been toying with the idea of making my own thread and taking a kind of from-the-ground-up approach to learning more about the process. It'll be very helpful to be able to craft some of my own tools rather than spend money I don't have on a part of the process I'm not sure will captivate me. I do have high hopes, though!
Love the mini torch technique 😁
@@Dayswalters1 thank you!
Thank you so much! This is exactly what I needed.
Great! I'm glad I could help!
I have one that I made out of legos
@@dronko-fire-blaster that's awesome! I hadn't thought of it, does it work well? 😁
@@psychedelicsquidfiberarts it works well enough, was more challenging to make it not flex to much to, Ive made over tools out of legos to like a umbra swift, a e-spinne, and a lathe to make a new part for my spinning wheel!
@@dronko-fire-blaster you made a lathe out of Legos!?!?! That's super impressive, was it a mini lathe?
@@psychedelicsquidfiberarts it barely worked, it was under powered and was built to fit exactly one size piece of wood, it also like to dislodge the work piece if I tried to remove to much at once, but after serial hours I got to to something I was happy with!
@@dronko-fire-blaster still it sounds like it worked enough to accomplish what you were doing 👍 very impressive
This was delightful, what a lovely little corner of the world to stumble into
@@TheAdmiralBacon thank you!
I watched this whole video, and I still don't know what a niddy noddy is.
@@Macca81 it seems the algorithm is working strange today, but a niddy noddy is used to wrap yarn after making it, somewhat like an old style yarn winder. It's an extremely useful tool for yarn and fiber artists. I hope this helps 😁
What thickness of leather did you end up using for the piece on the right and what was the diameter of the hole in the maiden into which it was inserted?
For the orifice hole, it was 7/16" and for the far side maiden, the leather was 1/8"-3/16" thick. It wrapped around the spindle end, which was about 3/16" in diameter. The leather also shrinks and thickens when treated with the hot water, so the final dimension will be slightly thicker. I hope this answers your question, if not please feel free to ask more questions 😊
The old wheel I just bought was missing the leather on the right side. The hole there is itself only about 3/16 so fitting folded-over 3/16 into the hole plus a dowel won't work. I suppose I could drill the hole larger.
@@PaulAshley For my maiden, the hole that the leather goes into on the back, actually has a wedge shaped carved into the front that tapered down to a 1/4" hole, which I used a wood dowel that was 1/4" in diameter that I sanded down into a point to hold the leather in place. You don't have to use a dowel, but it does make changing the leather out easier in the future
Looks cool!😊
@@Dayswalters1 thank you!
It flew by so fast I had to keep rewinding. lol I appreciate brevity but... I really do need more detail. There were some great product recommendations. Thanks!
@@Silurhian hello, sorry about the speed, this was my first video and my tempo was definitely faster. However, if you still need additional detail, please let me know and I'll do my best to answer 😁
@@psychedelicsquidfiberarts My very first real spinning wheel is about to arrive. I say "real" because I'd been practicing on an E-spinner. It's an older and somewhat unique design with the most gorgeous wood I've ever seen on a wheel. There's going to be some assembly and I'm unsure about the "health" of the wood and parts. lol I'm so excited and terrified. I really hope someone like you can help me out with advice once I start working on it. 🙂
Beautifully done experiment and video! I appreciate the information you provided.
As a seasoned woodworker i would not pass up on damaged units, especially if the spinning wheel was unusual in some way. I for one would take on a damaged project to restore a particularly unusual wheel to get it functional again. Its easy to replicate pieces that are broken but nearly impossible to replicate a missing piece unless you have a similar unit. As this video is geared towards someone who wants a used functional wheel and doesn't have a shop full of tools to make repairs its good info. Like buying a used car, who wants to pull it in their garage and start rebuilding the engine when you need it to take the kids to school.
@@dean4939 I agree, I'm an intermediate woodworker and I like fixing broken wheels! It's like you said, this video is for someone who wants to get into spinning yarn on a wheel without any knowledge or tools to fix them 😁
So organized!! Thanks for the tips. I’m now appropriately concerned about critters who might eat my wool. but that Giles & Kendall oil is wildly expensive to get to Canada. Some people suggest restoring cedar chest smell by lightly sanding the inside. Maybe sanding the cedar disks could work too!
@@rosielefaive oh definitely! Sanding the discs is also a great way to get them to smell to deter moths! I opted for the cedar oil since applying it was easier for me, but you can also use lavender oil. Wool moths specifically enjoy dirty wool, dark places, and sedentary wool. If it's moved around often, it's another deterrent. Good luck in your fiber adventures!
Thank you I will check the diameter of the crank
What wire bending jig do you recommend/use for this repair?
@@DoreenAlexander-y4n I used a simple one I got from Blick Art materials. Mine is an older model than they currently have, but anything that says it can bend up to 1/4" should work unless your crank is thicker than that. In which case I recommend a rod bender which can do up to your thickness. The onIy thing with a rod bender is that it's very easy to overcorrect a bend. I hope this helps, feel free to ask me any additional questions.
I usually use the pull out keyboard shelf thing on my desk to hold my yarn while I'm wrapping it into a ball
@@Loxalair that's another great option 👍
I love how quick and simple this is. No necessary chit chat, just straight to the point
@@magicpensel9548 Thank you!
What can you use this for? To actually crochet or what else?
@@GrammaSheShe it's used to pull yarn through an orifice on a spinning wheel. Used spinning wheels usually don't come with one, so this is a replacement. Sadly, it can't be used for crocheting.
Hi, this video was very helpful, thank you. May I as if this is an Estonian wheel? I have just purchased A wheel very like yours including the leather hinges. Yvonne x
@@v-mac2263 Hello, this wheel is actually a "franken-wheel". The base, legs, flyer, bobbin, and mother of all are from one wheel and the drive wheel and footman are from a different wheel. I'm not the best at identifying wheels, but there are Facebook groups that can help.
@@psychedelicsquidfiberarts Many thanks I will keep looking. :)
