The Ongoing NIGHTMARE of the SOVIET WALKMAN that's also a BOOMBOX The Amfiton P401C
This Soviet Russian Boombox Walkman thing has been an ongoing nightmare, it seems! In the first episode, I couldn't get it working. In this adventure, we'll try a viewer suggestion to see if it works... hint... it doesn't. After that failed attempt, I'll try plan C to get this working: a Bluetooth conversion. Think it will work? Stay tuned to find out!

When it comes to cassette recording, tape noise and hiss have always been a problem for some people. Dolby devised numerous systems to help deal with the problem. In 1968, they released Dolby B noise reduction, which became the standard for home recordists and prerecorded cassettes for decades. Next came Dolby C in 1980, and finally Dolby S in 1989. In the 70's it was possible to record digital audio to any tape format using a device called PCM adaptor, It basically uses the black and white portion of the video and records 0's and 1's as black and white squares, kind of like a modern 3D barcode, It was used to make masters for CDs, later on in the 80's Sony made some devices for consumer Betamax and VHS. In the 90's some S-VHS and Hi8 decks were capable of recording digital PCM on tape along the analog video and audio, JVC then went full digital audio and video (SD/HD) with the D-VHS format right before HD-DVD and Blu-ray emerged.

Oh boy, thats a damn shity quality for a 20 dollar tape, not one bit compares to good chrome tapes from the 90s…I work as a mastering engineer (bigcitynightsproductions) & I occasionally do tape transfers into high quality Digital Files for two privat musiclovers with lots of extra money. So they have amazing collections of cassette tapes, reel to reel & vinyl. For cassette tapes I use two machines in the studio a Revox (Studer) B215 & a Teac 8030s. So I’ve ben fortunate to to compare from amazing, chrome and metal tapes of the 90s golden era & what I just heard in this video is a plane choke in terms of tape quality…So sorry for new folks starting with this hobby but this ship has sailed !

It was absolutely a great medium (at the time) for recording high quality audio. A radio station I worked at in the 90's recorded and played back overnight programs from VHS tape. This was before full playout automation. Apart from the odd tracking issue (fixed with a head clean) program sounded pretty good and listeners could not tell it was coming from tape. Good video!

*Illicit Tomato Grow Op* would be a great name for an alt-rock protest band. I'm behind on videos and haven't gotten to watch the flood video yet. I didn't realize it was so severe. I hope repairing everything isn't a huge burden. I know here in Texas it's not as easy as it needs to be to get effective flood insurance, so it can be a real nightmare when it happens. Congratulations on the new studio! I really appreciate that you made this video public so everyone could see it. I think a lot of us underestimate how much space you need to build an effective video production space for UA-cam content. We imagine, like, the sound stage where they filmed *Star Trek*, but a lot less space can go a long way if organized correctly. Two generations of people were raised addicted to Tetris. And yet every live major concert by Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, even Bacharach recording engineers used Revox A77 / B77 to record the performance. VHS has poor tape handling design, hit pause and after ~5 minutes at least 20% of the tape has been adversely affected/ worn.

Type II/IV tapes generally don't need noise reduction as they can accept higher strength signals, thus giving them higher signal to noise ratios as well. It's normal tapes that noise reduction systems are mainly meant for. Dolby B was good for reducing noise but higher frequencies were still weak. Dolby C would make normal tapes play back with greater clarity and cleaner sound, like their high bias counterparts.

The video is AI generated. Never mind the nostalgia or resurgence bullshit. It's portable analog hifi. Get yourself a good 80s Japanese deck that's still running. Give it a good cleaning, buy some RTM C60 cassettes and listen to the magic. Now swap out the belt on a 90s Sony Walkman and take the show on the road. The end result should be an audio experience that rivals digital in terms of overall sound quality, but has that natural analog warmth & brilliance many of us crave. No other format can provide this experience while riding the train to work or seven miles above the earth. :)

I tried the first couple of JVC S-VHS machines released at the time and found them to be unimpressive with very poor frame manipulation, I sent them back. I left it a couple of years and then purchased Panasonic (starting with FS100) and never looked back. As with most machines, the tape you put in the machine had a major effect on the picture quality and the best tape I found that worked with the Panasonic's were TDK XP-PRO. There always seemed to be more dot -crawl and less colour with JVC tapes.

I grew up with PAL VHS and DVD. One thing I noticed when playing NTSC tapes, was that the blacks are lighter compared to PAL tapes where black is black. The NTSC VHS tapes had very muted colours and also have this effect where the redish colours leave motion smearing. The PAL tapes don't handle reds that well either with colour bleed everywhere, but they don' t have the motion smearing
