A Not So Simple Garden
Приєднався 29 бер 2007
This channel is mostly about plants, both in the wild and in the garden. Many unusual plants are featured along with my experiences growing them as well as seeing them in nature.
Helichrysum splendidum and how cold hardiness is affected by locality origin
Helichrysum splendidum is a reliable perennial in our gardens but provenance matters. A form grown from seed I collected in the South African highveld is not nearly as hardy as other clones grown from seed ex Panayoti Kelaidis and Silverhill Seeds who must have collected it at higher altitudes in South Africa than I did. We also see a plant from South America obtained from the NARGS seed exchange as Blumenbachia insignis. It is looking good but I don’t know if it will ultimately survive winter as this is my first time growing it. I thought it might be the annual Loasa tricolor but it is not. It is a member of the Loasaceae, a family of plants with stinging nettle like bristles but often colorful flowers.

A Walk Through the Old World Desert Gallery at the NYBG Conservatory
Переглядів 13321 день тому
The old world desert gallery consists of plants mainly from the seaters of southern Africa and Madagascar. Many aloes bloom in winter so there is more color in these deserts at that time of year than innnew world deserts.
New World Desert Gallery at NYBG in December

Not a lot of action in winter in the New World desert gallery at NYBG as most of the plants grow and flower in spring and summer. Nonetheless there are picturesque specimens of cacti and other arid land species worth seeing. Sadly the impressive Boojum tree is gone, but on the other hand a rare species near the end is doing quite well.

We continued our stroll on the cool rainforest galleries and see different kinds of plants including some new ones I hadn’t seen before.

This gallery is rather small but includes some nice New World ericads and an orchid display case. There are also ferns, bromeliads, and cycads.
A Walk Though the Pool and Vine Gallery at NYBG in December

The pool house as I call it is not representative of any particular habitat or region like most of the NYBG Conservatory greenhouses. Instead it has a long rectangular pool and large vines in both sides of the greenhouse. Other potted plants are also there some of them seasonal.
The 2 New World Rainforest Galleries at the New York Botanical Garden in December

I am walking through the 2 galleries after the main entrance gallery in the Conservatory at NYBG. It’s late December and we just exited the train show. There are less people in these galleries than at the show which is a relief, but at times it may be hard to hear what I’m saying due to passerby’s. I go up the stairs in the second of the 2 galleries which depict lowland New World rainforest. We...
More of the NYBG train show
Переглядів 29Місяць тому
This is a view of the train show in the main entrance house of the Conservatory. They had boats and many buildings in and along the pool with the Statue of Liberty who had a frown on her face. I know why she isn’t smiling about what’s coming, no one with more than half a brain in our country is either. But the train show was excellent nonetheless.
Train show at the New York Botanical Garden

The train show is an annual thing at NYBG and I went there today with my wife and a friend. It’s a bit noisy as there are quite a few people that also decided this was a good thing to visit on a gloomy rainy day in late December. This is just part of it, it is much larger than when I worked at NYBG in the early to mid 90’s.
Sorting Through The Oxalis Collection
Переглядів 59Місяць тому
I grow a lot of oxalis species and some hybrids. In winter it’s time for the species from the winter rainfall areas of South Africa to do their thing. This year I need to document what I have as I acquired the late Bill Baird’s collection a year plus ago and many lacked tags or I couldn’t read them. Plus I am not always so good with my labels either. I repotted almost all of the winter growers ...
Sorting Seeds for the NARGS Seed Exchange
Переглядів 85Місяць тому
Our local chapter, Hudson Valley, of the North American Rock Garden Society was busy today packaging seeds for the upcoming seed exchange. The NARGS seed exchange is a great way to obtain cool plants for a pittance so it’s a nice perk for members. Donors provide the seeds and get 35 instead of 25 packets on the first round. There is a second round where you can get even more seeds later on and ...
Sorting though the Oxalis collection

I grow a lot of oxalis species and acquired the late Bill Baird’s collection a couple of years ago. I repotted almost all of the winter growers, mostly species from the winter rainfall areas of South Africa. I also sent out extras to some other fans of oxalis and also put tags with my own numbers on them to better figure out what I actually have. No doubt there are misidentifications and duplic...
Lantern flies on Ailanthus altissima in Chappaqua New York
Переглядів 354 місяці тому
I was out this morning with my AP Environmental Science class and they were removing invasive species and deadheading some native ones in Our school pollinator garden to limit their spread when we came upon a small invasive Ailanthus which was already under attack by the invasive lantern flies.
Waterlilies in the pool
Переглядів 1436 місяців тому
We inherited a rectangular pool with the property and it had one waterlily with speckled leaves and meh flower. I soon added more from Texas Waterlilies and now they are spreading out of their pots and some even float as the rhizomes get larger. Fortunately the ones that have floating rhizomes seem to sink back into the water when it gets cold so the rhizomes don’t die. There are goldfish as we...

How do you become a teacher after being a curator? Did you have to go back to school?
nice sharing friend
I loved taking your class!

@@bulbomads thanks!
Rock Garden Seed Exchange.... so... you're sending out pebbles, then?
❤❤❤
In the drier parts of Pretoria they do grow, we have a few on our farm
So its a whole ecosystem?
pretty much
I love Alstromeria, but it isn't hardy where I live (as far as I'm aware). What zone are you?
We are in USDA Z7a according to the newest USDA map but are quite close to 6B. Lowest temps I have seen here in the last decade plus we have been here were 0 and -1F briefly, but not for long. Last winter was super mild, lows twice of 15F but plenty of freezing temps, just no real "polar vortex" situations.
Hello ❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏
Very very nice 👍
Thanks!
Very cool! I’m in NY too!!
Beautiful ❤❤❤
Looking happy! ❤
Looking good!
Very nice, the garden is waking up after winter.
Beautiful!
cool video
Thanks!
Wonderful!❤
Wow Lovely Flowers ^^ Like 4 My friend, thank you for good sharing Have a good relationship
Beautiful!
Thanks!
Very cool! How are K multiflora this season?
they are also doing well, by now I have cut the flowers of both species to bring indoors as we had a light frost this past week. Two more K multiflora seedlings had a first spike in the front yard, no where near as impressive as they will be in the future when they are stronger.
Very nice. Especially seedlings. I got some from Trader Joe’s two years ago as well and they are doing well. TJs got some unusual ones.
Amazing plant.
Looking good!
That looks amazing!
Thanks!
Looks awsome. Been on my wish list for years now but seems impossible to get hold of. If anyone has an idea where i can find seeds please comment.
Nice look of the flowering spring garden! But where's the Erythrina zeyheri? I can't saw that.
There are two plants, one in the front near the house but it has not come up yet. Should show up later.
@@sterritjieI will wait. Thanks!!
Hi! Did you order from the US site, or were these imports? Thanks!
I ordered from the US from their site. They take care of paperwork.
Nice to see them!
Hi. Would you trade seeds of k multiflora?
Fantastic! Lovely to see them!
Awesome stuff Ernie

I though Oxalis depressa only came in pink! Interesting
Great collection! :-) thanks for sharing!
Nice Video
These are a beast to dig up after they are big....I know you wanted to keep these, but if you ever want to dig up a clump base that you do not want I did it relatively easy with a post digger....I cut all the plants down even with the ground level and used the post digger...It worked well to break up and take the base out small clumps at a time, but I did it. Have to go slow though.
you were so right for this king <3
Beautiful, thanks for sharing. Where did you bought this plant? I`m looking for it for a great while in Europe but its very hard to get
Thanks for sharing, I've been looking at the Ecuagenera website thinking about putting in an order, you've made the decision a lot easier. So many nice plants to choose from.
I love this plant . have been growing South African plants in my garden in CT . I Lost my kniphofia multiflora years ago . Would love to share and or trade plants /seeds . Please message me if you are interested .
Hi! Thanks for this video. Check the videos name, is wrong. And add "orchid" in the videos name. Nice plants!!!! Thanks again
Never thought I would see any epidendrums I like.
they've got so many kinds, its hard to imagine not liking at least some of them
Happy spring!
I want to order too but I am waitting for the discount near Mother's day. I hope they will post on the website. By the way, how long did you wait to delivery?
it took a few weeks, they ship like once a month to their US facility in Apopka Florida than forward to the final destination from there. Another order made soon afterwards is probably going to arrive next week or soon after. I did pay extra for express shipping on the next order as that will include a number of things like Masdevallias which are rather delicate and should not be in transit too long. I will make a future video of that order too soon after it gets here. Thanks for the heads up about a potential Mother's Day sale, I will keep an eye out for that.
I just ordered my orchids from them. They have discount now. Please check✌️
@@jjhome20100 already made another order :)
I also ordered orchids from carmelaorchids.net/ They sent me very good condition orchids and very good deal. Some come with flowers 💐, so Happy 😁. I can receive the package within a week.👍
wow great haul!! I think I am going to have to put an order in with them!!!
I just did another order myself, lol. Will report on that one too when it gets here.
those agapanthus are ground hardy for you?
They get a light covering of wood chips but probably don’t need them as I have never lost one, not even in a harder winter so far.
Go Ernie!
Great garden tour!
Glad you enjoyed it
