Summer Christmas garden tour in Melbourne, Australia
Hi, I filmed this a few days before Christmas here in Melbourne, Australia. Hope you enjoy my little veggie garden tour - most things are growing nicely and I’m starting to pick beans, cucumbers, zucchinis, and even a few tomatoes. The Santa Rosa plum tree has fruits that are ripening and you’d be hard pressed to find something that tastes better than a sun-warmed plum ripe off the tree!
Happy gardening.
Happy gardening.

How to prune tomato plants
Переглядів 5538 днів тому
Hi folks, here is how I prune my tomato plants. There are many different ways to do it, here’s what works for me. These tips are geared towards beginner gardeners and are specific to indeterminate varieties of tomatoes which are what I grow. Determinate varieties have different pruning guidelines (if you choose to prune at all). Hope you find it useful and enjoy!

Late spring veggie garden tour - Melbourne

Hope you enjoy this little tour of my veggie garden in late spring here in Melbourne, Australia. *corection, when talking about the self seeded tomatoes, I meant to say “now that we DON’T have a male dog anymore”. Sadly our gorgeous Frankie passed away earlier this year. But it does mean I don’t have to worry about my ground level plants getting wee’d on anymore. #gardening #garden #growyourown...

New subscriber here👋🏾 💚 Your garden is absolutely beautiful 😍.
Thank you! That’s very kind. Yours is also lovely!
The okra is supercute 😍
The little hat! 🥹
Cute cucamelon
They’re adorable aren’t they? And quite prolific
Your fruit trees look great! Not looking forward to the 40degree Boxing day. I have an avocado tree with 15 small fruits. How do you cope with extreme heat? Do you coverwith shadecloth?
Thank you! Yeah I’m not looking forward to the heat either. I don’t cover with shade cloth but you might want to with the avocado. Particularly if it gets lots of afternoon sun. What type is it? I usually just make sure I water in the morning and evening on hot days.
My avocado is a Hass variety. It is ready when the skin turns dark. I have to cover with small mesh bags to stop possums eating them! @@the.bee.friendly.gardener
Do you have a Type B avocado to pollinate your hass? I’d love an avocado tree, just need to find the space for one!
Awesome garden,I'm a novice gardener,I just planted some Lavender to attract bees, which other plants would you recommend to attract bees?
Thank you! really love borage and blue salvias for attracting bees. Sweet alyssum planted underneath the lavender as a ground cover could work well too. Best of luck with the garden!
New Sub here. Lovely garden
Thank you for the support!
@@the.bee.friendly.gardener it's my pleasure
😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
it's much more difficult with paste/roma style tomato plants.
How so? I’ve grown Amish Paste before but that was an indeterminate so it grew the same as my others.
Why do Australian wimmin say "heeya" instead of "here"? Is it a form of retadayshun?
I’m not sure why, but your hypothesis is highly likely.
Thank you, very practical and looks simple to do. Your plants look super healthy.
Thank you! I appreciate it. Happy tomato growing.
Wow! I can’t believe how much you’ve packed into a small suburban backyard. It’s fantastic! 👏
Thank you! 🙏appreciate the encouragement.
This was a super informative two-part vlog - thank you so much! I mentioned on another vlog that I had all my fruit trees in large pots, but now want to espalier them along the back north-facing fence. You have answered many of the complexities that I couldn’t work out! So thank you for that. 🙏 On the subject of choice, would you mind putting up a list of your preferred fruit choices, particularly the plums and the pears? I’m a visual person, so when I look at your choice of fruit trees growing so profusely in Naarm, I know that I should have similar luck growing them here in my remote corner of far East Gippy! 🤞
Thank you so much, I’m so glad you enjoyed it and found it useful 🙏 I’m growing a Santa Rosa plum (pale flesh, red skin) which is extremely delicious. I’m extremely happy with it. I also have a new Satsuma blood plum but can’t comment on the taste as it hasn’t fruited yet. I have a Nijisseiki nashi pear and a doyenne du comice pear and both are three years old and I have yet to taste them. They are both happy and healthy though. Pears can be tricky as you need a pollinator (or a neighbour with one). I recommend The Australian Fruit and Vegetable Garden by Jane Varkulevicius and Clive Blazey for lots of great inspiration and fruit tree recommendations. As far as the others that have done well so far: Smyrna Quince (yet to fruit, but very healthy), Goldmine nectarine, Alberta peach. My Crimson Baby nectarine isn’t the healthiest and is prone to aphid infestation so I wouldn’t recommend it based on my limited experience.
You can hand-pollinate the zucchinis yourself to speed up the process. A tip I learnt with mine is to remove any leaf branches that are blocking the sun from the flowers. I did that and it made a big difference. Do you have any tips on espaliering fruit trees please? Mine have been in containers for two plus years, and come autumn/winter I plan to get them in-ground. The only fence available for them would be one that faces north. Would this work? Any words of wisdom are much appreciated. 🙏
Thanks for your comment! I’m glad to see you found my video on espalier set-up and found it useful 😌 best of luck getting your fruit trees in the ground. What varieties do you have? Thanks for the tip re hand pollinating the zucchinis! I honestly cannot find a single male flower on there at the moment but will try pruning some of the leaves and see if that helps.
Hey. I like your food bowl that you have created. I had a very productive veggie garden when I lived in Melbourne. I used to grow pumpkin up a ladder diagonally to save on ground space. The fruit used to hang on stems quite fine with falling but had made a bra up for some.Parsley, coriander and rocket perpetually elsewhere on the house block. It's amazing where it comes up if you scattered seeds around. Maybe try pruning straight after fruiting while it's still warm and paint pruning cuts. A lime slurry is cheap and effective. My thoughts on that is bacteria is slightly acid likening and lime in alkaline? It works for me.
Sounds like you had a wonderful garden while in Melbourne! Where are you now? I love self seeded plants - saves so much time on raising seedlings! I also love growing pumpkins on a trellis, a ladder would be wonderful. Thanks for the tip re lime slurry, I appreciate it.
Your channel is splendid! You put a lot of work into your property and it shows. Great work! New subscriber and happy to be here!!
Thank you for the kind words and support!

Quick question am in my green thumb journey and I would like to know when you're starting a raised bed. What do you put on the bottom of it before you start adding on the soil? I love your videos and thank you for your update 🙏🫶🫶🫶🌿🌿
Depends where you are putting it and how tall the bed is. If you’re putting the raised bed somewhere with invasive grasses (like couch and kikuyu) then try dig out the grass or layer with lots of cardboard before putting soil. Otherwise the grasses will send out long runners and take over the bed. If the raised beds are tall then you can fill with logs, cardboard, sticks, coconut coir, straw, any organic matter really. Then the last 20-30cm fill with a mix of soil and compost. Over time the organic matter in the soil will be depleted as the plants grow, the soil level in the raised beds will drop, but that’s ok, you’ll just have to top them up every so often with compost. Good luck!!
Coucou 👋🏻 Encore une belle vidéo ,bravo le potager est magnifique 😊 À bientôt
Thank you 🙏

Beautiful garden
Any planting advice for blueberries?
Hi Heather, I’m no blueberry expert unfortunately. The only thing I know is they like acidic soil. I haven’t pH tested my soil but it might be worth it. They like the same conditions as Roses and Azaleas (acidic) so I bought some rose and azalea slow release fertiliser and popped it in the planting hole. I was going to try get some rose and azalea potting mix to put in the hole but couldn’t find it. So perhaps try that. They seem to be doing well! Good luck with yours!
Very nice 🙂
Thank you!
@the.bee.friendly.gardener you're welcome 😁

@the.bee.friendly.gardener you're very welcome 😁
Sydney here! What a good idea for small blocks; I think I’ll give it a try
Great to hear! What fruit trees are you thinking?
So I have some seedlings I bought yesterday to plant. We are expecting a 43 degree day Monday, should I wait until after the heat to plant them? Or plant tonight (Friday) regional vic here.
What type of seedlings? If you’ve got the time to wait, then I’d say wait. Better to be safe than sorry. If you do plant them out make sure to water them well at least twice on the hot day (preferably more), and if you can, cover with a bit of shade cloth or something to keep the afternoon sun off them.
@ I got a sweet potato, zucchini, marigold, and Roma tomatoes.
Hi your garden looks great luv the tours.Would you mind letting me know how you make your Basil Pesto.
Hi Peter, I just put the basil into a food processor with Parmesan or Pecorino Romano cheese, nuts (pine nuts, almonds, cashews all work well), couple of cloves of raw garlic, pinch of sea salt, some olive oil. Blend it up and adjust quantities as you see fit. Once it’s at a taste and consistency you like, freeze in an ice cube tray. Once these are frozen pop the blocks out into a zip lock freezer bag and use at will (I just add to freshly cooked pasta and the warmth of the pasta in the pot defrosts the blocks). Delicious! You’ll have pesto all year round. Let me know how you go!
@@the.bee.friendly.gardener Will do and thankyou very much
Brilliant! Thanks for sharing the recipe. 😊
Fabulous garden. Subscribed
Thanks Annie! Appreciate the support
I love Birdies garden beds but must make for very expensive vegetables.
Yep there’s definitely more cost-effective ways to start a garden that’s for sure! They last a long time which is a plus. If I had my time again I’d probably make some wicking beds from IBCs.
new sub here. nice garden.
Thank you! I appreciate the support. Happy gardening
Well done! A very productive garden. I’ve left my plantings too late so they are nowhere near the size of your plants.
Thanks Ruth! What did you plant? Sounds like you’ll have plenty to eat late in the season though!
Just beautiful. So well laid out and organised.
Thanks Jarrod!
Your garden is very beautiful ❤❤❤
Thank you, so is yours!
Your garden is a dream!!! Would love this My dog unfortunately loves to get into my garden. Everything dies 😂😢
Thank you! What sort of dog do you have? Perhaps you can grow things in raised beds or pots?
Everything looks great in your garden 🥰
Thank you!
Love the flashbacks!
Thank you! Always nice to look at a big bucket of tomatoes
Your garden is looking stunning! Loved this tour! 😍🙌💚
Thanks Jackie! I appreciate it
You really do have a good set up!! gonna take me years to do mine!! LOL!!
It’s an ongoing process gardening! This garden has been a long time in the making (almost 4 years). Best of luck with yours.
😂ya now you're listening to a Melbournian when they say "heeya" for "here".
Haha I’ve never thought about it but you’re right!

Lovely! Some of them are almost iridescent.
Yes, the dill and cosmos especially!
It's not blossom-end rot on your zucchinis, it's poor pollination. Get out there early in the morning and pollinate and you'll get lots.
Thanks, I’ll give that a shot! Much appreciated.
That passionfruit wall is stunning! Love your garden! 😍🙌💚
Thanks Jackie! I love my passionfruit vine. I still have some from last year in the freezer, it’s so productive.
@the.bee.friendly.gardener How long did it take you to grow it and is it easy to take care of? Thinking of growing one but don't know where to put it cause of space.
It's a tomato jungle!
It sure is! I’m curious to know what type the self seeded ones are. Any guesses?
Really enjoying your garden tours! Some great ideas/inspiration! I’ve just started my first veggie garden in Perth and loving it! 😊
Thanks Meredith! So exciting, good luck for your new veggie garden! There’s a great gardening podcast called All The Dirt - both the hosts are from WA and I’ve found it really interesting and educational.
Your garden is looking beautiful despite the heat. I am in Melbourne and my avocado tree has ten tiny pea sized fruits and I hope we don't have too much wind!
Oh I would love an avocado tree! What variety do you have? Good luck, hopefully the wind is kind to you and your tree.
@@the.bee.friendly.gardenerI have a Hass avocado tree that was planted in the 80's by my uncle. It took many years to fruit but one year we had about 100 avocado's. Then every year we have less. The weather in Melbourne is very unpredictable but we keep it for sentimental reasons.
