    I have no idea if you still check the comments Roy but congrats on a succesfull build and the many years of good living it has provided. A quick question what variety of wood is that from the neighbours barn and is it stained? Slainte Tariq

      I appreciate the comments. The wood is southern yellow pine from my neighbors old barn. The cut edges are stained walnut. Most of it is just coated with a clear water based varnish.

    Beautifully designed and executed. My dream home. I’d change the course of the above ground stream to run through the centre of my house, along aqueducts on raised knee walls, ending up in a small pond in the middle of the living room, and then continuing down and out toward the front of the house, say into a garden

      Thanks for the nice comment. Chris T. To help prevent other people from making the same mistakes that I did with this house, I will mention a couple of things. I originally ran the rather small trickle of water through pipes to a stepped waterfall, spilling into the pool. I thought that it would produce tranquil sound to be heard in the bedroom next to the pool. I had to turn it off because my wife said it sounded like someone peeing into the pool. I have to keep the pool, drained most of the time because of the humidity. At one time there were seven different species of mushrooms, growing in the bathroom. I have to run two different dehumidifiers to deal with the humidity even with the pool dry. Good luck with any project you might be planning.

    An underground house makes so much more sense. Cooling/Heating minimal... you can always catch rainwater, no spring needed, if you simply build a porch/entertainment/storage area on top with any kind of roof. This is my dream and my plan.

    I'm not sure what is more impressive, the surroundings or the house! Amazing work, more especially that it was a one man job. Much respect for your determination, perseverance and vision. Do you use the pool occasionally? Ever thought of turning it into a Koi pond?

    • @roy_hayward1679
      @roy_hayward1679 2 роки тому

      Good idea about the Koi pond. no, I don’t use it. it seemed like a good idea at the time. My only way of keeping cool during the hot summers was to walk down to the stream below the house and get into a pool of water. The pool was also my bathtub. it was not uncommon for me to take “baths” six or more times a day. A pool of water in the house seemed like a great idea at the time!

    I'm so glad my Librivox friend Mary (I believe you know her well!) alerted me to this beautifully made video, Roy, about what has clearly been a most amazingly well-sustained labour of love. In Australia (where I live) many people watch a British TV show called "Grand Designs" about English people who turn old concrete tanks into stunning houses, but this, I have to say, leaves that for dead. There's obviously so much of this story still untold or very much understated here. Eight years! As for your video, it's beautifully paced. I love how you let your work speak for itself, as it were. Thank you for sharing this.

    Neat home! How many sq ft? For $28,000. That’s phenomenal if you built for that much. Of course, you had to eat many boxes of Wheaties doing all the back breaking labor? Best part is the natural insulation, free materials, low energy costs, perhaps low maintenance.
