KEEP GOING!! Driving Across The Simpson Desert {Overland Travel Documentary}Travel Australia-132
There’s NO TURNING BACK NOW, we have to keep driving across the SIMPSON DESERT, one of the most remote places in Australia, this is Outback Australia in the Red Centre. This is part 2 of our Overland Travel Documentary in the Simpson Desert on an epic 4X4 road-trip as we travel Australia in our 70 Series Landcruiser (79 Series) and rooftop tent. In this episode we continue along the WAA line and onto the Knolls track, doing offgrid off-road camping along the track after some hard days driving up some massive sand dunes and across vast salt lakes. We discuss the requirements you need to travel across the Simpson Desert such as Desert Parks Pass, high visibility flag and UHF radio on channel 10.
We discuss how much water and fuel we use as we travel, as there’s no where to get fuel or water until we reach Birdsville. We also show real life, travel life on the road as it happens.

Oh my gosh ! You are both very adventurous . You could promote Australia to the people from the UK . I love how you go off grid . Keep this amazing videos coming !!
Thank you Louisa, we really appreciate your kind words and are really glad you enjoy our videos. We would love to promote our videos in the UK but not sure how to get them picked up by UA-cam to promote there 🤩
@ True
I am so proud of you for appreciating the beauty of Australia and you have travelled to less visited areas of Australia . Kakadu is amazing !!
Thank you so much, glad you’re enjoying these places. We love seeing all these wonderful places and sharing them with you 🤩
You two are amazing and I love your videos !
Thanks heaps Louisa 🤩
I love remote places where you believe that your footprints are the only ones but I am scared of being stranded. That is why I would carry a beacon . You guys are amazing and I love your videos !!
That’s a great idea to have a beacon, maybe we should get one, one we could take on hikes as well. Glad you’re enjoying our videos 👍🤩
Yeah we know but keep it quiet we don't want mass population, welcome and enjoy. Get to the markets in the city. We have a beautiful coastline.
We don’t blame you for not wanting too many people, Adelaide is such a lovely place and we really enjoyed it when we were there a while ago. Thanks for watching 👍🤩
We retired to Adelaide three years ago from the UK and have'nt looked back - unbelievable place, wines, sun, friendly people everywhere.
That’s fantastic, well done for taking the plunge. We really enjoyed spending time in Adelaide and see why you love it so much. Thanks for watching 👍🤩
Great video, we enjoyed seeing your gear and where you pack everything. Well done!
Thank you, hope you have a great week 🤩
Looking forward to Pt 3 of the Simpson.
Thanks guys, glad you’re enjoying the journey through the desert, part 3 will be out next Sunday. 🤩
The sky looks really blue and then you have the reddish rocks . Thank you for you lovely video !
Agree, some of the colours are amazing when travelling around Australia, glad you enjoyed our video 🤩
McKinlay is where the Crocodile Dundee pub is. And you’re still only in Queensland
Didn’t know it was filmed there, thanks for the info 👍
Great this. I really like you guys. I have over 100 subs and yours is the best. My Mrs is English, so I understand your sense of humour. If you’re ever in nsw let me know and I will cook you a barbie. Thank you very much

@Neil-clare we won't stay in the UK, just travel around then onto somewhere else ... Watch this space
@@turtletrackstravels we’re be watching! 👍🏻
We all have to shit!! On my even remotest travels, almost wherever I stop, there is always an abundance of shit and toilet paper and disposable nappies lying about. The other things I see often is beer bottles and beer and soft drink cans. Most disturbing is the amount of used syringes... far too many to be from insulin dependant diabetics. Burying the shit is probably best but in dry sand country always add a few hundred mls of water to the hole before you fill it in. This will speed up the breakdown process... the dry sand is pretty much inert until wet. I used biodegradable bags and a camping toilet seat/ring. Toilet potty is good too but takes up too much room.
@@andrewretsas5589 Cheers Andrew, thanks for the advice. The worst we’ve found was a Dildo LOL 😂
A nice trip report with great photography re the scenery, track conditions, weather etc. I did the Tanami a couple of times now, once in a Mitsubishi Magma s/w towing a small trailer and then in a Jeep Wrangler. It was/is a great trip that lets one see real outback country. I note a big fire made from fallen trees etc. Could you please leave the bloody trees alone, dead or otherwise, and stop burning them? Deserts are living landscapes. Dead or alive, trees are critical elements of desert landscapes because they stabilise dune country. They provide essential habitat for little creatures and a swathe of insect types from the heat of the day and cool of the night. And they provide the building material for the nests of birds of prey, many of which are endangered or severely challenged in terms of survival. Think Wedge Tailed eagles for a start. Trees, dead or alive also provide sanctuary from predators. The dead bark and other fragments you see at the base of the still surviving trees provides food and nourishment for a myriad of insects that, if you looked, you will find amongst it. It keeps the roots of the tree cool so that it can better survive in the hot, dry desert. It reduces evaporation of water (what little there is) that is in the soil, thus providing it with the meagre water supply it needs to survive. And, as it breaks down it provides nourishment for the tree. The clear area around the tree and all the other vegetation you see, is where myriads of harvester ants and other insects (for perhaps as long as 100 years and more and who knows how many generations) have cleared the dead vegetation and taken into their nests for food. One person burning one dead tree might seem inconsequential. It isn't! Thing is, thousands of people are now travelling "outback" and into desert country. And probably every second or third person is cutting down or burning a tree. See the problem? At many regularly used camp sites there is no timber to be found for 100s of metres around. So, I say again, leave the bloody trees alone, dead or otherwise. If you want a gargantuan fire, for cooking or ambiance, take your firewood with you. There are plenty of suppliers of firewood in 20kg bags and dirt cheap that don't take up much room in a 4b. And even more room when travelling with 2 or 3 or more vehicles. Everyone (in my experience and observation) takes far too many tools that weigh heaps, but no firewood.Better still, cook with gas. Or fit a travel oven. Or stay at home or on the bitumen. If you want to stay warm at night, take an extra sleeping bag and proper night time clothing that will keep you warm. Deserts get down to <0C by midnight. Just my 20c worth of preaching.... but no, not really. Just trying to educate outback wanderers of better ways to behave. Good behaviour when outback isn't just about burying your shit, and taking your rubbish and memories with you. Too often the footprint that is left will be a destructive one, though most people will not realise it. And, I am not a greenie.
@@andrewretsas5589 Hi Andrew, thanks for all the information but not sure what you saw, we had a very small fire using firewood that was left over from previous campers (i say this in the video), we never collected any firewood from the desert. We totally understand what you’re saying. Glad you enjoyed the video.
Awesome video.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it 👍🤩
For the back of the car, you could try a hard bottom dog bed/cover, that will give you more room as the hard bottom will extend out over the seat. You then can try good old fashion plastic storage draws without taking out the back seat.
Thanks for your ideas, sounds good. We will certainly look into other options, cheers 👍🤩
Such a fun episode. My goodness,Australia is so beautiful. Doing the French Line in June. Can't wait!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it. You will have a blast, we absolutely loved every second of it 🤩👍
Congratulations guys you have really found your groove. Looking back comparing your old videos with your more recent … what a difference. Especially enjoying the fact that you aren’t following the other dozens of UA-camrs all doing the same thing and the same destinations/ routes with the same boring footage. How refreshing that you are secure enough to do your own thing. Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much Kevin, we really do appreciate it. Glad you’re enjoying our videos 🤩👍
Enjoyed this episode. Looks like a gruelling sort of journey though. Well done!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed our videos. It is tough but thoroughly enjoyable at the same time 👍🤩
what a pair of adventurers you two are! great vid and fabulous drone work! hey Gazza - what brand of sand flag is that?
We love being adventurous, keeps us alive lol 😂. We got the Drifta flag 👍🤩 Glad you enjoyed the drone footage 👍
Just wondering how long you have carried your fresh fruit and vegetables as you seem to manage to keep it all looking very fresh ? Your meals look superb . We can understand how tiring this drive must be with the concentration and the terrain . Thanks for the journey , glad it’s you not us …….we’er too old but it was very interesting following your expedition .
Glad we could take you along for the ride through our videos. It was very tiring from all the concentration. We stock up when we can, after completing the Tanami we restocked in Alice Springs before heading back into the desert, can usually stock a week to 2 weeks fresh stuff, just depends on what we buy, 🤩👍
Thanks again guys great episode nice driving Denise 😊 look forward to the final SD episode.
@@barrydixon1 thanks Barry, I was a bit nervous of some of the steep dunes but Gaz always gives me the confidence 👍🤩
Great Vid... Not sure why you would lock the canopy ?? We have a planned E-W trip ....One Day...
Good question! We lock because of all the bumps and any corrugated sections, it will stop a lock from potentially rattling loose and coming undone 👍
Exactly what I thought when I noticed you unlock 👍 an extra precaution.
@@barrydixon1 it makes sense 🤩👍
Cracking episode again guys, really enjoy your posts. Cheers 😊😊
Cheers 👍 Glad you’re enjoying our videos 😊
Good one. I know it's cliche to say, but the camera/video never does justice on how steep some of those dunes can be. And why so much dirt in your canopy with the water spillage? Isn't your canopy sealing the dust well?
It is well sealed but i think after several months on the road it has built up from lifting things in and out and you don’t wipe off the bottom of the boxes before putting back in and then the dirt gets trapped under the rubber mat 👍
you guys have done everything spot on have worked out there for 25 year you guys done well landcriuser work the gears enjoy to good
Thank you so much, really appreciate that as we’ve never done anything quite like this before, a few sand dunes but nothing as large as the ones in The Simpson 👍
“This” turtle thinks “oh dear, what a giveaway”

@ laugh if you wish “dear”, but “snapping turtles” tend to make very damned sure of themselves before they decide to promote themselves as being anything other than your worse nightmare!
@1ihws not sure how this relates to our video of travelling across the desert
@ oh you’ll find out - and it’ll probably the hard way, just like all the rest of the people who “think” they know what they don’t know, and would like to convince us they have all the knowledge and experience to tout themselves as a travel channel!
@1ihws we never claim to know everything, we just film what we’re doing, watch or scroll on
Well I have officially moved into my new chapter of life, saving madly for a few months then hitting the road to WA. Hope to catch you guys out there someday 🥰

You’re not on the PDR if you’re anywhere near Bramwell station The PDR only runs from lakeland to Weipa You’ll be on the NPR (the Northern Peninsula Road)
Thanks for the info 🤩
What the hell happened to your front left door?
Not sure what you’ve seen but there’s nothing wrong with our door, maybe you’ve seen a reflection that makes it look to the contrary, cheers 🤩
Good stuff. I hope to do this trip next year (West-East).
That’s great, have to say it’s been the best experience we’ve ever had, loved every minute of it 🤩
What a great adventure thru the desert. Cant wait to see the next episode. Yes chop the top off the boiled egg.lol
We loved every minute of it, some of the sand dunes were huge and the scenery was beautiful. That’s a win for Gaz LOL 😜
hopefully I can get up that way before they seal the roads, I really want to experience it before hand
Definitely 👍 We fear that once they do seal more of the road there will be a lot more people taking this route and it definitely won’t be the same 🤩
Geographical not geological centre
👍
I didn’t take the pen!! If you look closely the pen changes from the original pen i was holding to a green pen, none of their pens worked and Gary got our DJI pen out of our vehicle, so this is the pen i put back in our vehicle, we left their pens there. We didn’t leave our pen because it was the only one we had at the time…..We didn’t film Gary getting the other pen and we cut out the fact no pens worked…it’s called EDITING…..Can’t believe I’ve had to explain this and people are focused on something so trivial, we didn’t notice it when we made the video that it would look like i took a pen, we just cut out the crap to make the video better….THANK YOU HOPE THAT CLEARS IT UP……..😅
@@turtletrackstravels Yeh & there out there on the roads with us 😐 Frightening 😡
😂😂 very frightening
Loved your “dippy eggs” and soldier toast . I’m with you Denise and peel the shell away while my husband chops the tops off like Gary . Thanks for the Simpson Desert drive .
