    Academics are still the most important. if you have capacity for scoring 520+ on mcat focus completely on that + some side experiences (which should be energizing rather than feeling like obligation). No one really cares if you are the most passionate person for Latinx queer health if you can't score above 510 on mcat.

    • @jadieeee
      @jadieeee День тому

      I definitely feel like this isn't true... Academics is a (large) but partial piece of the whole pie. If you're applying to a program that serves or focuses on a particular community, you should be highlighting and proving you have lived experiences as a member of xyz group or are passionate about serving that community if you aren't. You can have perfect metrics but if you aren't fit to their mission, why would that school even consider your application?

    Thank you for the video. As a first year premed myslef i enjoyed the content and will keep these in the back of my head until it is time. If you are reading this, i have a question for you. I took a gap year between high school and college to help support my family. Is that gap year looked apon negatively? If so is there anything i need to do to be a more competitive applicant that those who did not take a gap year dont?

    Thank you for the information! I am a current freshman in college and plan on applying to medical school Spring 2026 since I will be graduating May 2027. The research experience explained in the two better applications seem like graduate level experiences so I wanted to ask if these students applied to medical school after 4 years of undergraduate college or did they take gap years? What I am wondering is how they were able to get high level research positions as sophomores or juniors in college (as is in my understanding from the timeline of their application). Thank you!

    Previous videos and emails instructed me to build a central theme that express my passions and reasons to pursue medicine. This video tells me to not focus on a central theme but to scatter impact across different extracurriculars. How do these two fit together?

    • @MichaelMinhLeMD
      @MichaelMinhLeMD 18 днів тому

      Hey Kevin, This is extremely insightful. Fantastic question. I see competitiveness in a tiered system. Above all else is impact. The #1 predictor of success in medical school is success as a premed. If you have serious impact - even if it's scattered across different extracurriculars - that gives you a proper chance no matter where nor when you apply. Now, to your second point about this application being scattered. There is considerable overlap between his extracurriculars. He does basic science liver research. He presents keynotes at Hepatitis C conferences. He does community service for the Asian American community (the demographic that got him interested in liver disease in the first place). That's community service, basic science and academia work all in this central theme of Asian / liver health. Yes, he has extracurriculars outside of this central theme but most importantly, the impact in those individual extracurriculars are apparent and the cohesion feels genuine. Lastly, if the goal is to develop impact, we have found it most helpful to align your extracurriculars around a central theme. If you really enjoy one thing over others, chances are that you'll spend more time there. Chances are that you'll develop skills faster there. Chances are that that time and skills will directly translate to impact. Finding what you care about is a reasonable precursor to making impact. In short, impact above all. Central themes may help with making you more impactful. Hope this helps! :)

    I LOVE this new series. I thought the interviewee was very relatable in how she answered the questions. I feel like I would have responded in similar ways. It was super insightful to hear your commentary of what you liked and what you didn't. Some of her answers I thought you would dislike, but I was surprised to hear the opposite. It reframed my perspectives on what admissions committees look for, and I will keep coming back to this video to remind myself of that. Thank you for sharing!

    Hello, I have a question. I'm planning on applying to med school. I have about 1700 clinical hours but I only have around 200 hours of research that was not that much meaningful. Im currently studying for mcat while looking for a research job, but they are mostly full time, far away, and competitive. I already applied to more than 30 and none of them answered back. Now I am thinking of whether I should just do part time MA near my house while focusing on MCAT. Do you think I should continue pursuing research job? or do you think MA is a good idea?

    I recently learned about an opportunity in my city that involves working as a liaison between refugees and healthcare centers. The purpose of the opportunity is to help refugee clients get in touch with healthcare facilities, encourage them to independently access ongoing treatment, maintain case notes and client files, and schedule and accompany them to appointments. So far I have heard that clinical experience usually comes from scribing and by working in a hospital. Do you think most universities will count this opportunity as clinical experience?

    • @MichaelMinhLeMD
      @MichaelMinhLeMD Місяць тому

      Are you working with these people more in a clinical context or in a social work context? It sounds a bit like the latter, which would be more a caseworker volunteering position than a clinical experience one. Still, it sounds fantastic even if not a clinical experience and would stand out imo.
