So good 👏
Gee that was a bold call from Bill on the turn in the first one but he was spot on 👏
Gives me chills to this day ❤ I rode work for TK Griffin, owner/trainer My Axeman...one of, if not thee, proudest win for him and "Chessy" as the big boy was called at home. I worked his full sister (Cis NZ) and she went on to win a few, but not quite the star he was. Kingston Town, one of the GOATs 🐎 ❤
Biggest blooper call from caller Kingston Town can’t win and what does he do wins his third ws cox plate Immortality right there The Mighty Kingston Town
Gave gurners lane a cold in this race lol
When someone says you cant do something it makes you want to prove them wrong. I got a feeling Kingston Town heard the caller and did just that. What a horse hey.
To here the call go from “Kingston Town can’t win” to “He might win yet, the champ” was beautiful . The sweet imperfection of ‘The accurate one’- Bill Collins has had me likening this to Don Bradman missing out on a 100 average in Test Cricket, through being bowled for a Duck in his last test innings.
I still c myself coming back to watch this race and the call definitely made it even better ❤
I never saw kingston town race but saw a video about him and it said he was an amazing horse with an amazing turn of foot and no one could beat him, but he had an accident and wasnt the same horse. But also heard, he had that heart of a champion and even after the surgery he had, he didnt have that same speed, but that heart he had and fighting spirit wouldnt let him give up and why he still won so many races after that injury. Not sure if this is true, csn anyone confirm it or tell me how it really was?
Still my fav horse ever. Aotearoa NZ through and through. Imo the greatest mare ive seen. Yes i still stand by that.
The King.
Winx would never had got past Northerly or the King
Champion
Love the cheering sound of the crowd….goosebumps!
WINX WOULD HAVE SPACED K.T
Ha ha...I would have liked to seen Winx at level weights against Happy Clapper over the Randwick mile...Or him receiving some weight... Winx positioned nicely behind The King and Better Loosen Up in timeform..
LOL. Thank you, made my day. Kingston Town still with higher Timeform rating than Winx. Please remember that Winx beat nothing of any note. And if Kingston Town was trained at the same time as Winx with todays training methods Winx would not get close and Kingston Town's rating would be even higher. Special horse.
Bill never lived it down,"can't win"in a friendly manner!
I had the pleasure to live 3 doors down from Kingston Town's stable in flemington, my dad knew the stable foreman Darcy Christie, I was lucky, not just to see the horse but to pat him,on the eve of his 1st Cox plate win. I will always remember that . Great Champion Champion .
Your moment in time , I had the same thing with Vinny knight , I was a kid around champions …..
Have you noticed Peter Cook gave him half a dozen hard clouts with the whip leaving the barriers?
Yeah I noticed that I had to check it was kingston town I guess he figured he needed to be closer to have any chance to win but the horse was a v8 under the hood
I give Winx my ultimate compliment. The best since the King.
Beat that the mighty Kingston Town
1:46 The only time Bill Collins was inaccurate
I remember being there. Such great days. And even better when the Valley had the trots. Kingston Town winning the Cox Plate then stay around to watch Popular Alm at night. Two of the greatest horses of all time.
"Kingston Town flashing, he might win yet the champ"
The roar of the crowd when charges home to win the 3rd is spine tingling
💯 magnificent
Greatest horse in the past 90 years...
A lot of people compare Kingston Town & Winx, but you can't compare...completely different horses & different levels of competition too. I like KS more, because it was so much harder for him to win in VIC...because absolutely hated running that way!
Kingston Town is my all time fave.....the greatest never to have won the Melbourne Cup.....but man, did he come close!!! Best weight for age horse ever.....at least imo
What a rush to judgement from the race caller Kingston Town can’t win what an exceptional specimen he was The King 3 Cox Plates absolutely a great sight to watch Took 40 years or thereabouts to see another Champion do the Greatest Mile and a half in the world Mighty Winx but we always remember The king’s dominance in the Latr 70’s and early 80’s Number Cuz one and two in my opinion and you could argue which order but Greatness on the track 💯👍🏾
can't win my arse 🗽
Sunline has never beaten northerly not even once
very sad to see “family of man “ knock up 😭
I liken the late, great Bill Collins call of “Kingston Town can’t win” to Don Bradman missing his 100 Test average- both brilliant with the hint of imperfection that makes us mortal. I love that Bill went from that to later saying “He might win yet, he Champ”. Bill’s call, like many of his others, is a big part of what made this ‘82 Plate so iconic, so memorable!
I'd put him level with Winx and Rising Fast, just behind Tulloch. Phar Lap No 1.
Don't know who would win but one hell of a race
"THE GREATEST".
She kicked just about 150m from home and got 1 length on him thats what won her the race. Legend horse she was and she beat him on his home track but luck played apart Sunline always made her own luck by leading and having a high cruising speed.
He might win yet the champ....and then the loudest cheer at a racetrack when he climbed from the canvas to overrun some pretty handy horses. I was at Rosehill watching the Sydney champ take it all before him at the Valley for his 3rd win. The crowd around the TV monitor that day went off in a frenzy, and it was barely an hour after Manikato had become the 2nd horse (after the King of course) to break the million dollar prizemoney barrier. Best day ever, unforgettable.
went to the track a lot in the second half of 1982 - The King and the Man won a lot of races on those days and helped a mug punter keep some cash!
Truly a great Champion, he had a lot of leg issues throughout his career. Won over distances from 6 furlongs to 26 f. Only Champions can do things like that. He beat a very good horses that day. Had a terrific turn of foot. I think the Australian people could do with another Champion like him atm. Everybody loves a Champion thoroughbred. Hail the King.
Should have won over 3200m. What a run that was.
Love that Kingston Town can't win lol. But to be honest he looked more in trouble in his 2nd win than the 3rd. I know this is 35yrs later but Winx would have given him a cold as good as he was especially with several ligament issues he was just a champion and knew where the line was. The only Melb track he ever won in was the Valley how weird. But to think he was running 2.06 and 2.05 then Winx runs 2.02 etc i know it is a different track as turf is concerned but 3 and 4 seconds difference is a few lengths. But it took 35 yrs for a horse to equal 3 in a row and 36yrs for a horse to create her own page, no horse in 1000 years will have ever won 4 straight Cox Plates, same as the Diva no horse will ever win 3 straight Cups and especially a mare. Top stuff all round.
lets be serious kingston town tracks were cow pattics compared to what winx raced on times are different.
You must be a young fella cause there is no way winx would give the king a cold , also when kingston town won his cox plates the distance was 2050m whereas winx won hers over 2040m. I followed both in their prime and over 2000m at royal randwick both carrying the same weight I would back kingston town to win.
Given him a cold 😂 ya kidding , get off the pipe .
@@craigbeadman798I'd be on the King at Randwick with you...virtually unbeatable in syd..
Winx is great but nowhere near Kingston Town. Different tracks, different training methods. If Kingston Town was trained today I have no doubt that Kingston Town's Timeform rating would be well over 140 and challenge Frankel.
King

One of the greatest
Look,if Kingston Town had won the 1982 Melbourne, Cup he would had been ratified as the greatest of all time, shame his jockey was not Ron Quinton
Greatest of all time is Secretariat: this is how you win a turf race - annihilate the field well before the final turn: ua-cam.com/video/EqliNZvnFoE/v-deo.html
How you can secretariat is the greatest is a joke….. beaten in 25% of its races….. one swallow (Belmont) doesn’t make a summer.
@@michaelhawkins92 It's very simple, of the 5 losses one was a harsh DQ from a race he won easily and another he was virtually knocked off his feet at the gate in a short sprint race he would have won in two more strides as his apprentice jockey finally found a hole and he was flying home. The three other losses he was entered unfit for racing (mouth abscess, fever and untrained late substitute for a stable horse in event of a wet track). Now if you excluded those understandable factors, he set the world in fire in his other 16 races. Never winning by less than a full body length (and usually multiple lengths and nearly always hand ridden), numerous last to first wins despite overtaking horses wide on the outside turn... and an unprecedented six track records and additional winning margin record in 1973. Including an almost unbelievable track record for each leg of the Triple Crown, including world record in the Belmont and world record in the Marlboro Cup (forerunner of the Breeders Cup). For another American horse to be definitively rated higher than Secretariat it would have to break at least three of the four track records Secretariat set in the Triple Crown plus all age (Breeders Cup) championship. American Pharoah - probably the best horse since Spectacular Bid - came closest by winning all four races, yet all in significantly slower times.
@@connorduke4619 Thanks, but this reads like a shopping list of excuses. And who’s to say those horses he beat in his wins didn’t have the same excuses themselves.
@@michaelhawkins92 The facts around Secretariats 5 losses have been widely verified and are not in dispute. On now occasion did the connections of a horse who finished ahead of him claim any issues. The most classic case of a difference between a sick Secretariat versus a healthy one is his narrow loss to Onion. A few weeks later when recovered he met the same horse over the identical distance, gave him both a significant head start and the inside rail, before passing him on the turn on the outside and defeating him by 10 lengths en route to the world record, hand ridden. Onion ran approximately the same time in both his narrow victory over a feverish Secretariat and his resounding loss to a fit one.
Ron Quinton said I might have steered him better, I agree 6 more wins including 82 Melbourne Cup
Look at the King's head! He just wants the post - he just want's to win!
Loved his Caulfield Stakes wins
What a run, again John Mauchline says best horse in the world, love hom
Him
My God I loved that racehorse. Super versatile at the highest level
