Best Invisible Join for Crochet Granny Squares
Welcome to Pattern and Craft!
Have you been looking for a better way to join and increase your rounds for basic crochet granny squares?
In this in crochet tutorial video I go over 3 different ways of joining rounds and moving up to the next round for traditional granny square, including one option where the joins are nearly invisible!
3 options are shown in this video:
Method 1 - the tradidtional corner join (the classic method)
Method 2 - the modified join (which is close to invisible)
Method 3 - the invisible corner join (my new favorite method)
This tutorial is for those who already know how to make basic granny squares and are looking to refine their technique and find out about alternative options.
Chapters:

    I noticed that these techniques don’t actually follow the path of one strand of yarn, but instead attach one row to the one beside it. Don’t you find this affects the vertical elasticity of the piece?

    • @patternandcraft
      @patternandcraft 8 днів тому

      @@jeancarter7732 I don’t notice an issue since it’s only worked over a short span - one could take the time to follow the exact path of the yarn but in that case I would worry then that you’re basically doubling the thickness of each stitch as if you knit with a double strand of yarn so would be more noticeable, and it would take longer and be more difficult to do - but you could definitely try it and see which you prefer. I’ve also seen ends woven in diagonally (I saw after I made my video, otherwise I would have included that too) which could maybe be better for maintaining the elasticity rather than working between rows. There’s many options and techniques available to try, and some may be better suited to some projects than others.

    Does this only work with garter stitch? What should we do if we're knitting stockinette flat?

    • @patternandcraft
      @patternandcraft 8 днів тому

      it works with stockinet but it does still curl, so it makes a nice edge but does not eliminate the curling that stockinet tends to have at the edges.

    • @patternandcraft
      @patternandcraft 8 днів тому

      @@latitude1904 actually… so I just tested something out… if you add 1 purl stitch right after the edge stitch at the start and just before the edge stitch at the end for the right (knit) side, and 1 knit stitch right after the edge stitch at the start and just before the edge stitch at the end for the wrong (purl) side of your flat stockinet then it creates a beautiful edge that does not curl, but it is no longer identical front to back. The front looks the same as the normal edge stitch does because that single purl stitch basically disappears on the front, but on the back side you’ll have the slip stitch edge plus the knit stitch so it looks different on the back, a bit wider.

    I've crocheted my entire life and when I learned to knit, this is how I purled!

      @@djlclopez128 maybe it’s a crocheter thing then? It was so hard to learn to knit for me as a crocheter! I thought it would be similar but nope- the yarn goes over the needle in the opposite direction, the tensioning is very different, the muscles used are completely different… took me like a month and a half to make anything decent looking haha! And I had to figure out this way of purling since the other ways felt so awkward- though now I see it’s not all that uncommon, just not the norm.

      @patternandcraft Yeah I know! I tried knitting so many times but to me, crocheting is just so much faster - one hook in one hand, yarn in the other and you can make rows so fast. Knitting is so much work to get just 1 row! Haha 😂 I'm impatient too so it's difficult going so slow learning to knit. I still hold the yarn in the same hand, I just couldn't change it mentally haha

      @ I’m thankful I learned about continental knitting it makes more sense to my brain and I get to hold the yarn in the left hand. I’m still way faster with crocheting and love it but I do like how much softer the result with knitting is so I’m kinda obsessed now.

    Almost Portuguese knitting where we wear the yarn around the neck and flick the purl stich with the thumb. It's so much faster and fewer movements.

    Nice to see a demo of this. I use my thumb too and it gives me a more consistent tension.

    I, too, purl with my thumb. I am self taught and this is just how I ended up purling. This is the first time I have seen someone else purl this way. Thanks for sharing I hope it is helpful to someone.

      Same here! I too purl this way and this is the first time I've seen anyone else do it this way. I was sure I couldn't have been the only person using this method as it just seemed to be the easiest way to purl.
